Use /spawnnpc only for actual NPCs such as villagers, guards, merchants, or crew. A failed modded spawn can also indicate broken monster JSON; the exact cause is usually visible in Starbound/storage/starbound.log.

Use the right command for the entity
Starbound has separate commands for monsters and NPCs. The command commonly called the “creature spawn command” is /spawnmonster. It is an admin command that creates the specified monster at the player’s mouse cursor. Critters use this same name-based command rather than a separate critter command.

Some entities that players casually call NPCs are implemented as monsters. If you give a creature’s monster ID to /spawnnpc, the game will not create the expected entity. Conversely, a villager, guard, merchant, or crew member belongs with /spawnnpc and requires a race and NPC type.
Correct command templates
Basic monster or critter
/spawnmonster poptopReplace poptop with a real spawn name available in your installed game and enabled mods. The monster appears at the mouse cursor, so place the cursor over an open, suitable area before pressing Enter.

Monster with a level
/spawnmonster hugebiped 10The level is optional in the basic form. Add it only after the no-option command works. Use a numeric level supported by the entity and your game build.
Monster with variant parameters
/spawnmonster <type> 1 '{"capturable":true}'<type> is a placeholder, not text to enter literally. Substitute the installed monster’s spawn name. Keep the variant JSON inside single quotes as shown. A malformed JSON object, an unsupported property, or a property that the monster’s definition does not understand can prevent construction even when the base ID is correct.
NPC
/spawnnpc human villager 1The documented order is race, NPC type, then an optional level. This is not interchangeable with the monster syntax.
Fix a non-working spawn step by step
1. Turn on admin mode
- Open Starbound’s chat or command input.
- Enter
/admin. - Confirm that the game accepts the admin command, then retry the spawn.
/spawnmonster and other debug commands require admin mode. In multiplayer, the server can prevent players from gaining admin privileges. If /admin is rejected or has no effect on a server, changing the monster command will not solve the permission problem; the server’s settings or operator permissions must be addressed first.

2. Test the smallest possible command
Stand in an open area and put the mouse cursor where the creature should appear. Run a known, simple form such as:
/spawnmonster poptopDo not begin with a level, capture flag, or custom JSON. The command targets the cursor rather than an arbitrary point near the player. A cursor over a wall, cramped platform, hazardous tile, or otherwise unsuitable position can make a successful spawn difficult to see or prevent placement.

The first argument is the monster’s spawn name, not necessarily the label shown in a catalog, quest, or mod description. Verify the identifier against the asset files or documentation for the exact game build and mod version you are running. Pay attention to spelling and capitalization where the asset list requires the expected lowercase form.
- A typo means the game cannot construct the requested monster.
- An ID from a different Starbound version may no longer exist or may have changed.
- An ID supplied by a mod will fail if that mod is disabled, unloaded, installed incorrectly, or superseded by another version.
The command references define the required type or spawn-name argument, but they do not provide a universal list of every mod’s identifiers. For a modded creature, the mod’s own asset path and current documentation are the authoritative places to verify the name.

4. Add one option at a time
- Run the bare ID, for example
/spawnmonster poptop. - If that succeeds, add only the numeric level, for example
/spawnmonster hugebiped 10. - Once the level form works, add the variant JSON.
- If the command fails after one addition, remove that addition and investigate its value or syntax.
This isolates the failing argument. OpenStarbound’s API documentation describes monster construction as returning an entity ID on success and nil when the requested entity cannot be created. In practical terms, a failure after adding JSON can be an invalid variant or an entity definition that cannot satisfy the requested options, rather than a problem with the command prefix.
Tell monsters, critters and NPCs apart
When to use /spawnmonster
Use it for hostile monsters, neutral creatures, and critters. All of these use the monster name form, even when a critter is harmless or looks like a background animal. The command still requires admin mode and still places the entity at the cursor.

When to use /spawnnpc
Use it for characters implemented as NPCs, such as a human villager or other race-and-type combination. The command requires the race first and the NPC type second:
/spawnnpc human villager 1A seed can be added when repeatable NPC generation is needed. NPC syntax cannot be used as a substitute for a monster ID.

Read the log when a modded monster fails
After a failed modded command, inspect Starbound/storage/starbound.log immediately. Look for the first monster-related error around the time of the command, not just the final chat message.

Could not spawn Monster of type 'smoglinz'followed by a JSON exception reporting a missing appliesWeatherStatusEffects key. That combination points to a malformed or incompatible monster definition. Changing spaces, adding extra slashes, or repeatedly retyping the command will not repair a missing required field in the mod asset. Update the mod, repair its monster JSON if you maintain it, or remove the incompatible version.
- If the log says the monster type cannot be spawned and names an unfamiliar ID, first verify that the ID exists in the currently loaded assets.
- If a JSON exception follows, treat the asset definition as the primary suspect.
- If the base command works for vanilla creatures but every creature from one mod fails, the problem is likely that mod’s installation or compatibility rather than admin syntax.
A creature-specific diagnosis cannot be conclusive without the exact command, creature ID, platform or build, and mod list. Those details, together with the relevant log lines, distinguish an unknown ID from a malformed definition.

The cursor controls the spawn position
/spawnmonster creates the entity at the player’s mouse cursor. If the cursor is over a blocked tile or outside a visible area, the result can look like “nothing happened.” Move to a wide, flat, well-lit location and place the cursor on clear ground before testing again.

The entity may move immediately
A successful monster spawn can leave the cursor area quickly, especially if the creature is hostile or the terrain gives it a route away. Watch the surrounding screen and, for debugging, use an open space where its movement is easy to observe.
Bosses are a separate test case
Do not use a boss as the first proof that the command works. Starbounder warns that most listed bosses do not work correctly when spawned into a random world. Boss encounters can depend on a particular arena, mission, world state, or scripted context that an ordinary spawn does not need.
First verify the command with a normal monster or critter. If ordinary creatures spawn but a boss does not, the syntax and admin state may be fine; the boss may simply require its intended encounter context. Treat that result as a world-context limitation rather than automatically as a misspelled command.

- Is the target a boss? Test it only in an appropriate encounter context and do not use its failure to judge ordinary spawn syntax.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using
/spawnnpcfor a creature: monsters and critters require/spawnmonster. - Skipping
/admin: the spawn command is restricted to admin mode. - Typing a display name instead of a spawn ID: use the identifier from the installed assets.
- Testing a complex command first: isolate the base ID, then level, then JSON.
- Putting JSON in the wrong quoting format: use the documented single-quoted JSON argument.
- Ignoring the cursor: the command does not automatically choose a visible safe location.
- Blaming punctuation for a broken mod asset: a missing required JSON field can prevent entity construction even with valid command syntax.
- Using a boss as the initial test: many bosses are unreliable outside their intended world or encounter context.

/adminand verify that admin commands are accepted. - Classify the target as a monster/critter or an NPC.
- Place the cursor in an open location.
- Run
/spawnmonster valid_idwith no optional arguments. - Confirm the exact lowercase spawn name and that its mod is loaded.
