To befriend the Mines Dwarf in Stardew Valley, first clear the rock east of the regular Mines entrance, then donate all four Dwarf Scrolls to the Museum. Gunther’s Dwarvish Translation Guide unlocks communication; until you understand the Dwarf, gifts do not raise friendship. Afterward, you can give up to two gifts each week, plus one on the Dwarf’s birthday.
Where to find the Mines Dwarf
Look just east of the entrance to the regular Mines, in the Mountain area. A rock blocks the route to this Dwarf. This is not the other Dwarf found in the Volcano Dungeon; the instructions here apply to the resident by the regular Mines. See the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Dwarf page.

How to reach the Dwarf
Break the blocking rock to open the path. The Dwarf page lists either of these options:
- Use a steel pickaxe.
- Use a cherry bomb or a stronger bomb.
Unlock the ability to understand Dwarvish
- Find all four Dwarf Scrolls and donate them to the Museum.
- Collect the Dwarvish Translation Guide reward from Gunther.
- Check the Player’s Menu under Special Items & Powers to see the guide.
The guide is what lets you understand the Mines Dwarf. The Dwarvish Translation Guide page describes the item and its unlock. Until you have it, the Dwarf speaks Dwarvish, and gifts cannot affect friendship. Purchases at the Dwarf’s shop also require understanding the language, according to the Friendship page.

Give gifts after the language prerequisite
Once you understand the Dwarf, gifts can change friendship according to the Dwarf’s preference for each item. The Dwarf accepts up to two gifts per week, with one additional gift on their birthday. The weekly allowance and birthday gift are separate limits: the birthday gift is in addition to the two weekly gifts.
There is no verified Dwarf-specific loved, liked, disliked, or hated item list here, so avoid relying on unconfirmed gem recommendations or treating every valuable item as a good gift. Check an item’s current reaction on the Dwarf page before spending it. The Friendship page also notes that version 1.6 added custom gift reactions; platform-specific release timing is not established by these sources.

If gifts are not raising friendship
- The Dwarf will not accept or respond to gifts: confirm that you donated all four Dwarf Scrolls and received Gunther’s guide. Until you can understand Dwarvish, gifts cannot affect friendship.
- You have the guide but see no increase: check the item’s Dwarf-specific preference and whether you have already given two gifts that week. A gift’s effect depends on its reaction category.
- You cannot get to the Dwarf: return to the rock east of the regular Mines entrance and break it with a steel pickaxe or a cherry bomb or stronger bomb.
