Choose a cat or dog during character creation. In Spring, leave your farmhouse on a sunny morning between 6:00 and 9:30 a.m. after earning 1,000g to trigger Marnie’s first pet offer; the event happens by Spring 20 even if you have not earned the gold. You can accept or decline. Later pets require a pet license from Marnie’s Ranch.
How to get your first pet
- Choose a species when creating your character. Select cat or dog; that choice determines which pet Marnie offers. You can name the pet when you adopt it, but the name cannot be changed later.
- Earn 1,000g and wait for a qualifying morning. In Spring, exit the farmhouse between 6:00 and 9:30 a.m. on a sunny Wednesday or Friday. Marnie’s adoption event should trigger. It will occur by Spring 20 even if you have not earned 1,000g.
- Decide whether to adopt. Accepting Marnie’s offer is optional. If you decline, the initial pet bowl remains on the farm.

How to adopt additional pets
Pet licenses become available at Marnie’s Ranch once your first pet reaches maximum friendship. If you have no pet, the Year 2 route also makes licenses available; the wiki records that route in its 1.6.3 history. Buy a license from Marnie for each additional pet.

Give every pet its own bowl
Each pet needs an individual Pet Bowl. Build additional bowls through Robin; the first bowl is free and stays on the farm even if you decline the first adoption. A pet without its own bowl cannot leave the farmhouse and loses 10 friendship points overnight. Filling the bowl adds 6 friendship points by the next morning, except when rain makes that increase inapplicable. Petting a pet adds 12 points.
