There is no objectively best spouse in Stardew Valley: all 12 currently playable marriage candidates share the main marriage benefits. This ranking favors character writing and heart-event appeal, then considers how easy it is to build a relationship and what each spouse adds to farm life. The order is an editorial recommendation, not an in-game tier list; choose the character whose story and personality suit your playthrough.
How this ranking works
Each candidate is judged by the same four considerations: narrative and heart-event appeal, accessibility of loved gifts, distinctive spouse flavor, and farm usefulness. Gift access depends on your route, season, money, and progress, so a favorite gift that is easy to find for one player may be inconvenient for another. Spouse chores and general benefits are shared possibilities, not reliable reasons to call one character universally superior.
The current marriage roster has six bachelors—Alex, Elliott, Harvey, Sam, Sebastian, and Shane—and six bachelorettes—Abigail, Emily, Haley, Leah, Maru, and Penny. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Marriage page lists the candidates and relationship mechanics. The rankings below are a story-first recommendation, not a claim about player consensus or game code.
All 12 marriage candidates, ranked
1. Abigail
Abigail takes the top spot for a memorable mix of curiosity, independence, and adventurous energy. Her route has a strong sense of character, making the relationship feel like more than a change in household status. She is a good fit if you want a spouse whose interests and outlook feel distinct from ordinary farm life. Her placement reflects story appeal rather than a mechanical advantage over the others.
#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
2. Sebastian
Sebastian’s reserved personality gives his relationship arc room to develop, and his interests make him one of the roster’s most distinctive choices. He suits players drawn to a quieter, more introspective story. His spouse flavor is part of the appeal; shared marriage mechanics mean choosing him does not unlock a categorically better set of chores.
3. Leah
Leah is an especially natural match for a farm-centered playthrough: her creative life and independent temperament fit comfortably alongside the player’s rural routine. Her route offers a grounded, warm alternative to a more dramatic romance. Choose her if you want a partner whose personality feels at home in the valley without making farm utility the deciding factor.
4. Haley
Haley’s route is appealing because it gives her room to reveal more than her first impression suggests. That change in perspective makes her a rewarding story-first choice. Her position here is not based on an income advantage: spouse chores and gifts are chance-based, and the available evidence does not establish a candidate as a dependable source of farm income.
Rank #2
- PLAY WITH LIFE, IN REAL LIFE: Dive into the neighborhood, meet iconic Sims, and fulfill your life’s aspirations like never before!
- A NEW WAY TO PLAY SIMS: Gather up to 5 players as you each craft your own story while collecting matching SIMbols along the way in this family strategy game

- MAIN CHARACTERS WANTED: Recommended for 2-5 players, ages 12 and up
5. Emily
Emily brings an eccentric, upbeat sensibility to the roster, making her a strong pick for players who want a more unconventional romantic storyline. Her personality is the main reason to choose her; the mechanics shared by spouses do not make her a more useful partner in every save.

Harvey’s thoughtful, mature temperament makes his route a good fit for players who prefer a steady and caring relationship. He offers a different tone from the more impulsive or adventurous candidates. Any claim that he is the best spouse for farming should be treated cautiously: all spouses may help with common chores, and those actions are not guaranteed.
7. Penny
Penny suits a gentle, family-minded story and may appeal most to players who want a quiet domestic tone. Her character-specific appeal is more important than looking for a unique farm advantage. Marriage can lead to shared benefits with any candidate, so consider whether her story fits the kind of life you want your farmer to build.
Rank #3
- EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF CATAN: Settle the uninhabited island of Catan by gathering resources, building infrastructure, and nurturing trade relationships.
- STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
- TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.
- REPLAYABLE AND ENGAGING: With a modular hexagonal board, no two games are the same, offering endless strategic opportunities and replayability.

8. Sam
Sam’s energetic, youthful personality gives his route a lighter feel. He is a good choice if you want an upbeat partner rather than a brooding or especially dramatic romance. His ranking reflects this list’s story-first lens, not weaker marriage benefits.
9. Maru
Maru’s curiosity and practical interests make her an appealing option for players who enjoy an inventive, intellectually minded character. Her route offers a distinct personality, though this ranking gives more weight to candidates whose relationship arcs feel especially compelling from start to finish.

10. Elliott
Elliott’s literary and romantic manner makes him one of the roster’s more theatrical choices. He is likely to suit players who enjoy an expressive, deliberately old-fashioned romantic tone. That style is a matter of taste, not a drawback in the game’s marriage system.
Rank #4

11. Shane
Shane’s route centers on a more difficult personal arc, which can be meaningful for players who want a story with rough edges. It is not the lightest romance in the roster, so consider whether that tone is what you want in a long-term farm relationship. Gift convenience can vary by playthrough; no single candidate’s loved gifts are automatically easy for everyone to obtain.
12. Alex
Alex is a better fit for players who connect with his particular ambitions and personality than for those seeking a broadly adventurous or unconventional story. He still receives the same core marriage system as the other candidates. Last place here means only that his route is the least compelling match for this story-first ranking—not that he is a bad spouse or mechanically inferior.

After marriage, your spouse moves into the farmhouse, gains a unique room and outdoor area, and may occasionally help with chores or give food and other gifts. Possible help includes watering crops, feeding animals, repairing fences, or preparing breakfast. These are chance-based spouse behaviors, not guaranteed daily services, and the core benefits are broadly shared across candidates. The Stardew Valley Wiki explains the spouse friendship and gift mechanics on its Marriage page and its Friendship page.

Spouse friendship can rise to 14 hearts. At 12.5 hearts, a spouse can give the player a Stardrop; this marriage-related Stardrop can be obtained only once per save file. Those shared milestones matter more mechanically than the ranking above.
How to date and marry a candidate
- Build friendship to eight hearts. A candidate’s friendship meter stops progressing at eight hearts until you give them a bouquet.
- Give a bouquet to begin dating. Pierre sells bouquets once this relationship step is available. The bouquet lets the relationship progress beyond eight hearts.
- Reach ten hearts and prepare to propose. You need a farmhouse upgraded at least once and access to the Tide Pool area.
- Buy the Mermaid’s Pendant and give it to the candidate. The Old Mariner sells it at the Tide Pool for 5,000g on rainy days. In winter, you need a Rain Totem to make the required rain possible.
- Attend the wedding. It normally takes place three days after the proposal, although certain town-square events or Green Rain can delay it.
The current mechanics and prerequisites are documented on the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Marriage page.
Are Clint and Sandy marriage candidates?
Not among the 12 candidates listed as currently playable on the Marriage page cited here. PC Gamer reported that Clint and Sandy were announced as marriage candidates for the planned 1.7 update, but that announcement alone does not establish that the update has released or that their spouse mechanics are available. Check the current game update and roster before treating either character as a playable marriage option.
Source: PC Gamer’s report on the 1.7 announcement. Shane and Emily joined the marriage roster in version 1.1; the wiki also notes a wedding-outfit fix in version 1.6.
