Once inside, a Copper Axe or better can chop six Large Stumps that regrow daily, yielding up to 12 Hardwood per day. The woods also hide Old Master Cannoli’s one-time Stardrop reward, fishing and forage, and a separate Maple Syrup encounter.
How do I get into the Secret Woods in Stardew Valley?
Find the entrance in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest. A Large Log blocks the way; the standard route requires a Steel Axe or better to remove it. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Secret Woods entry and Large Log reference describe the required upgrade. A chair-based workaround is also noted, but it is an unusual exploit rather than the normal way in.
What axe do I need for the Secret Woods?
The entrance and the stumps have different tool requirements. You need a Steel Axe or better for the entrance Large Log, but only a Copper Axe or better to chop the Large Stumps. Upgrading to Steel opens the area; a Copper Axe is enough for the daily stump harvest once you are inside. See the Wiki’s Large Stump reference.
Where are all the hardwood stumps?
There are six Large Stumps in total. Each yields two Hardwood and regrows daily, so clearing all six provides up to 12 Hardwood per day.

Four stumps in the upper area
Four stumps are in the main upper section. These are the easiest to overlook if you leave after chopping only the first visible ones: explore the area before heading south.
Two more stumps in the lower area
The other two stumps are in a smaller lower section reached through covered passages. One passage is slightly southeast of the upper group. The other is south of the entrance, about two or three tiles to the right of a bush; follow its south-west-south route. Both passages lead to the lower area, so check them to reach the full daily yield. The Secret Woods and Hardwood references document the stump total and reward.

What can you use the Hardwood for?
Hardwood is a crafting resource used in recipes such as the Cheese Press, Oil Maker, Worm Bin, Cork Bobber, Rain Totem, Mushroom Log, and Cask. The Secret Woods is a dependable daily source after you have access and the right axe, but it is not the only way to obtain Hardwood: Mahogany Trees and some farm layouts offer alternatives. Those sources have their own availability and growth conditions, so they may suit a larger project better than relying on the woods’ daily stumps alone.
What do I give Old Master Cannoli?
Give the statue of Old Master Cannoli a Sweet Gem Berry to receive a Stardrop. The exchange grants the Stardrop once; it is not a repeatable daily reward. The statue’s inscription reads: “–Old Master Cannoli– …Still searching for the sweetest taste…” The Secret Woods and Stardrop references describe the exchange.

How to get a Sweet Gem Berry
Grow a Rare Seed in Fall. A Sweet Gem Berry takes 24 days to grow, so plan ahead if you want to bring one to the statue. The Sweet Gem Berry reference gives its season and growth time.

Fish in the southwest pond
The southwest pond can be fished year-round for Woodskip and Carp. Catfish is also possible there on rainy days.

Seasonal forage and slimes
Seasonal forageables appear in the woods. Slimes attack the player and can drop Mahogany Seeds, making the area a source of both combat encounters and a possible seed drop. The Secret Woods reference lists its fish, forage, and enemies.
Bear’s Knowledge: a separate Maple Syrup encounter
Bear’s Knowledge is separate from Old Master Cannoli’s Sweet Gem Berry exchange. First find Secret Note #23 to activate the Strange Note quest. While that quest is active, carry Maple Syrup and enter the Secret Woods on a sunny day between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. to trigger the grizzly encounter. Its reward permanently triples the sell price of blackberries and salmonberries. The Secret Woods reference covers the encounter and conditions.
