For the lowest-pressure, most self-directed casual play, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the safer pick. If “casual” means dipping into a game with lots of different activities and visible progression, Stardew Valley may suit you better. Neither is objectively easier for every player: the difference is how much structure and variety you want.

What “casual” means changes the answer

There is no publisher-issued ease ranking or established comparative difficulty test for these games. A useful way to choose is to ask whether you want a gentle routine or a broader set of goals to pick from.

  • Choose Animal Crossing: New Horizons if you want to decorate, collect, fish, garden, and visit residents at your own pace, without making progression the focus. Nintendo describes it as a game where you can “Live life at your own pace.” Nintendo’s island gameplay overview.
  • Choose Stardew Valley if you like deciding among farming, fishing, crafting, relationships, exploration, and skill progression. ConcernedApe describes it as an “open-ended country-life RPG.” Stardew Valley’s official feature page.

How the games differ in everyday play

What matters Stardew Valley Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Main activities Farming, fishing, crafting, relationships, exploration, and skill growth Gardening, fishing, decorating, collecting, and getting to know island residents
Pacing Open-ended, with farm development and other goals to pursue Nintendo says players can go at their own pace; time and seasons follow the real world
Added demands Five skill areas—farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging—and dangerous monsters in caves Some creatures and discoveries depend on the real-world time of day or season
Likely casual fit Players who enjoy variety and a sense of advancement Players who want low-pressure activities and an island they can personalize

Is Stardew Valley relaxing, or does it feel like work?

It can be relaxing if you enjoy choosing your own goals and switching between activities. But its cozy presentation does not mean every part is mechanically simple: skills, farm development, cave exploration, and combat add more structure and management than a purely decorative life sim. You can focus on the activities you like, but the game’s design includes those more demanding systems.

What to expect from Animal Crossing’s real-time calendar

Animal Crossing’s slower pace comes with a calendar tied to real life. Nintendo says the time of day and seasons match the real world, and the creatures available to find vary by time and season. That supports brief check-ins and gradual island projects, but it also means some discoveries depend on when you play rather than on progressing through a sequence of in-game goals. Nintendo explains the island’s time and seasonal changes.

Check your device before choosing

Platform compatibility may settle the choice before play style does. Stardew Valley’s official materials list releases for PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, and Android. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is for Nintendo Switch-family systems; Nintendo’s store lists a physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Check the exact listing for your hardware and region before buying, since store availability can change.

On Nintendo Switch, Stardew Valley’s official store listing is digital, not a physical cartridge listing. Stardew Valley’s official factsheet lists its platform releases; Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition listing and Nintendo’s Stardew Valley listing show the relevant product formats.
