In Stardew Valley, the TV Weather Report forecasts the next day, helping you decide when to water crops, fish, or take your watering can to Clint. Ordinary rain waters outdoor crops and enables rain-dependent fishing; storms do that too, but add lightning risk. Green Rain is a separate summer event with unusual effects on the valley and its residents.

How to read the TV Weather Report

Watch the Weather Channel on your television for tomorrow’s forecast. Use it to plan farm work, fishing, and a watering-can upgrade: if rain is forecast, water your crops before leaving the can with Clint. A forecast is useful, but not infallible. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Weather reference notes specific forecast exceptions, including Spring 2 or 4 and Summer 13 or 26; that is a documented caveat, not evidence that forecasts are generally unreliable.

After unlocking Ginger Island, the television gives a separate Fern Islands forecast after the valley forecast. Ginger Island has only sunny and rainy weather in the Weather reference; its rain chance is listed as 24%, and 0% on the first visit.

What each weather type means for your farm and plans

Weather Farm and fishing Town or special notes
Sun / clear Outdoor crops need their usual daily watering to grow. Festivals use clear, sunny weather regardless of the day’s normal randomized forecast.
Rain Rain waters outdoor crops for the day and makes rain-dependent fish available. Rain is not normal winter weather unless you use a Rain Totem.
Wind / debris weather Wind is a distinct weather state, not rain; do not plan around rain-only crop or fishing effects. The TV describes spring wind as a light breeze with pollen and fall wind as cloudy with gusts. The technical weather-data reference represents wind with a debris-weather flag.
Storm / lightning A storm includes rain, so outdoor crops are watered and rain-dependent fish are available. Lightning may damage crops, trees, or farm tiles. Summer 13 and 26 are always stormy under the documented game rules.
Snow Snow does not water Winter Seeds or Powdermelon; water them if you want them to grow. Snow is winter weather.
Green Rain Creates abundant weeds and unusual green-rain trees; many changes are temporary, though some Green Rain Trees can remain or spread on the farm. In Year 1, most villagers stay inside and gifts cannot be given. TVs show green static.
Festival / wedding These are special weather states rather than ordinary farm-planning forecasts. Festival days use festival or sunny weather. Wedding days have their own weather state.

Weather can also affect villager dialogue and behavior. For heart-event weather checks, storms and Green Rain count as rainy, so an event requiring a sunny day will not trigger then. Windy and snowy days can count as sunny for these checks. See the Weather reference for the documented rules.

Rain and storms: watering, fishing, and lightning

Rain and storms both count as rainy weather for the practical purposes of outdoor crop watering and rain-required fish. The key difference is lightning: a storm always includes rain, but lightning can strike random farm tiles and damage crops or trees. A fruit tree hit by lightning temporarily becomes a coal tree.

Lightning rods can intercept strikes if they are ready. A rod that is already processing a strike into a Battery Pack cannot intercept another at that moment, and rods do not guarantee protection from every strike. Before a forecast storm, check your rods and consider whether they are available to intercept lightning. The Weather reference and Crops reference describe these mechanics.

Planning a watering-can upgrade

  1. Check the Weather Channel the day before you plan to upgrade your watering can.
  2. If rain is forecast for the next day, water crops before taking the can to Clint.
  3. Account for the forecast exceptions noted above rather than treating the prediction as guaranteed.

Choosing a rainy-day activity

Use rain or a storm to pursue fish that require rainy weather. A storm qualifies, but factor in the possibility of lightning damage to the farm and the availability of your lightning rods.

Green Rain: what happens and when

Green Rain is a special summer event, not an ordinary rainy day with a different color. It occurs randomly once each summer on one of the dates 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 18, or 23, according to the main Weather reference. The Modding: Weather data reference lists a slightly different set and omits the 15th, so the sources disagree on that exact date list.

During the event, large quantities of weeds and green-rain trees appear around the valley; the Beach and Calico Desert are excluded. The changes are often temporary, though some Green Rain Trees can remain or spread on your farm. The event can also affect devices. In Year 1, most villagers remain indoors and you cannot give gifts. The television displays green static. Since Green Rain counts as rainy for heart-event weather checks, it does not satisfy a sunny-day requirement.

Green Rain can be a useful gathering day if weeds or moss-related resources suit your plans, but expect a changed town routine and temporary shifts in the landscape. The Green Rain reference documents the event’s effects; it also lists a 50% chance for a fully grown tree to receive moss and a 75% chance for a fully grown oak or maple to become a temporary Green Rain Tree.

Winter, wind, and other weather edge cases

Snow does not water winter crops

Winter Seeds and Powdermelon still need daily watering to grow, even when it snows. Rain is not part of normal winter weather unless you use a Rain Totem. Check the Crops reference for crop watering rules.

Wind is not rain

The spring forecast’s breeze and pollen or fall’s clouds and gusts describe wind weather, not rainfall. Do not assume rain-dependent fish will be available or that crops will receive rainwater on those days.

Festivals and event checks use special rules

Festival weather overrides the ordinary randomized forecast and is clear and sunny. Wedding weather is its own state. Separately, windy and snowy days can count as sunny for heart-event weather checks, while storm and Green Rain days count as rainy.
