There is no universally best trait set in Starfield: traits are optional trade-offs, and the right picks depend on how you plan to travel, fight, and role-play. For a flexible first character, choose Extrovert if you usually travel with human companions, Introvert if you usually explore alone, and consider Empath if you tend to make choices companions approve of. You can select up to three traits—or none—and some combinations are incompatible.
How to choose traits for a first character
Bethesda describes traits and their trade-offs, but does not publish a strongest-build ranking. The recommendations here match each trait to the routine or preference that makes its benefit worthwhile. Traits are optional; you can take up to three or start with none. See Bethesda’s Character Creation – Starfield and Character Traits – Starfield guidance for the character-creation rules and trait descriptions.
- Choose for your normal routine: companion travel, solo exploration, or frequent grav jumps.
- Count the cost: some benefits come with recurring credit transfers or higher hiring costs.
- Choose specialized effects only if you welcome the drawback: for example, surprise attacks from mercenaries or less effective healing items.
- Use traits for role-play when that matters more than flexibility: faction, religion, and family choices affect dialogue, rewards, access, or costs.
Traits can also affect dialogue and mission rewards. Bethesda says unwanted traits can be removed through in-game quests; removal is permanent until New Game+.
Best traits for common playstyles
Extrovert: for human-companion travel
Exerting yourself uses less oxygen when you have human companions and more when you adventure alone. Take Extrovert if companions are usually part of your travels. It cannot be combined with Introvert.

Introvert: for solo exploration
Exerting yourself uses less oxygen when alone and more with human companions. It suits a character who usually explores solo, and it cannot be combined with Extrovert.
Empath: for companion-friendly choices
Actions companions like temporarily improve combat effectiveness; actions they dislike have the opposite effect. Empath fits players who pay attention to companion preferences and are comfortable taking them into account.
Specialized traits with meaningful trade-offs
Wanted: extra damage with surprise attacks
When your health is low, you deal extra damage, but armed mercenaries occasionally appear to attack you. Choose it if the extra encounters sound fun rather than disruptive.

Taskmaster: a ship-crew investment
If crew members are trained in a ship system, that system can occasionally repair itself to full health when damaged below 50%. In exchange, hiring any crew costs twice as much. It is most relevant if you plan to use a crewed ship and can afford the higher hiring costs.

Serpent’s Embrace: for frequent grav jumps
Grav jumping temporarily increases health and oxygen. Those values fall if you do not keep grav-jumping regularly, so choose it only if frequent jumps suit your travel habits. It cannot be combined with the other religion traits.
Alien DNA: more health and oxygen, less effective healing
You start with increased health and oxygen, but healing and food items are less effective. Bethesda says Alien DNA can be cured at a Reliant Medical.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Spaced and Terra Firma: choose your usual environment
These traits exchange health and oxygen advantages between space and planetary surfaces. They are mutually exclusive, so weigh where you expect to spend more time rather than trying to take both.

Faction traits: dialogue and mission rewards tied to allegiance
Freestar Collective Settler, Neon Street Rat, and United Colonies Native provide special dialogue and better rewards from some relevant faction missions, while increasing crime bounties from other factions. You cannot combine these faction traits with one another. They make most sense when their story and faction focus appeal to you.
Religion traits: choose one group’s chest
Raised Enlightened and Raised Universal each provide access to a different religious-group chest in New Atlantis and remove access to the other group’s chest. They cannot be combined with another religion trait.
Hero Worshipped: a recurring crew member
Hero Worshipped adds the Adoring Fan as crew and brings gifts, but he appears and talks frequently. Pick it if you enjoy the character and do not mind the interruptions.
Traits are not backgrounds
Backgrounds are a separate character-creation choice. Bethesda says they unlock multiple skills at Rank 1; a background is not a trait and does not use one of your three trait slots. See Character Backgrounds – Starfield for Bethesda’s background information.
