Starfield has four boostpack settings: Basic, Skip Capacity, Balanced, and Power. They describe how a pack’s boost function is configured; they are not four separate named pieces of equipment. To use a boostpack, unlock Boost Pack Training Rank 1, jump, then activate the boost.

What are the boostpack types in Starfield?

The four commonly listed boostpack settings are Basic, Skip Capacity, Balanced, and Power. They differ in boost output, fuel use, and regeneration behavior. Detailed comparisons below come from a third-party guide published in 2023, so treat them as descriptive rather than guaranteed current tuning values.

Setting Boost output Fuel use per activation Regeneration
Basic Short boost, according to GameRevolution’s 2023 comparison. Not stated in the cited guide. Not stated in the cited guide.
Skip Capacity Low-duration, high-intensity boost according to the boostpack modification reference. Not stated as a numerical value in the cited guide. Faster regeneration than the other types, according to GameRevolution’s 2023 comparison; the guide estimates about 50% faster, not an official Bethesda statistic.
Balanced Balanced output in the modification reference; GameRevolution describes it as giving a higher jump. More boost meter use than Basic, according to GameRevolution’s 2023 comparison. Not stated in the cited guide.
Power Longest boost, according to GameRevolution’s 2023 comparison. GameRevolution says one activation uses a full meter. Not stated in the cited guide.

The references do not establish exact current values for boost height, fuel consumption, or regeneration. Use the comparison to understand the broad trade-offs, not as a promise of precise performance in every current game version.

Named packs are equipment; settings are modifications

A named pack is an item you equip. Examples in the pack inventory reference include the Constellation Pack, Deep Mining Pack, Explorer Pack, and Star Roamer Pack. Basic, Skip Capacity, Balanced, and Power are boostpack settings or modification types—not separate named packs. A named pack therefore should not be assumed to have a unique boost behavior simply because it has its own name.

How to use a boostpack

Bethesda explains that some packs include a feature that lets the player propel through the air briefly. The boost function is gated by the Boost Pack Training skill, not merely by having a pack equipped.

Starfield (Standard Edition) [Xbox Series X]
  • Includes: Starfield Standard Edition (Disc)
  • Travel to the stars in this next-gen RPG from the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4
  • Create a character according to your imagination and explore the endless expanses in unparalleled freedom
  • The goal of this epic journey? The answer to humanity's greatest question
  1. Unlock Boost Pack Training Rank 1 in the Tech skill tree. Bethesda’s official help page identifies Rank 1 as the requirement to utilize boostpacks.
  2. Equip a pack that includes the boostpack feature.
  3. Jump, then activate the boost: press Space on keyboard, Y on Xbox, or Triangle on PlayStation, as listed by Bethesda’s boostpack controls help page.

Bethesda’s wording is that some packs include the feature, so owning any pack should not be treated as proof that it can boost. Its official help page describes the feature as propelling the player through the air for a short amount of time.

What each Boost Pack Training rank does

Boost Pack Training changes the fuel behavior as well as unlocking access. Bethesda’s skill listing describes the rank effects as follows:

  • TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
  • EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
  • CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
  • DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
  • LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
  • Rank 1: You can utilize boostpacks.
  • Rank 2: Reduces fuel expenditure.
  • Rank 3: Increases fuel regeneration speed.
  • Rank 4: Doubles the earlier bonuses.

The skill ranks and the pack settings affect different parts of use: a setting changes the pack’s boost trade-off, while training improves access, fuel expenditure, or regeneration.
