What happened during Captain Brogan’s introduction?
Dexerto reported on September 3, 2023, that Aaron S Bailey (@AaronBaileyArt) threw a grenade as they emerged into an encounter with Crimson Fleet pirates. Brogan began speaking while the grenade passed over him; it exploded behind him, and Bailey then began shooting.

Bailey described the moment in a post dated September 1, 2023: “I’ve only been playing #Starfield for an hour and the literal funniest thing just happened.” That is the player’s reaction, not evidence that the interruption was deliberate or a repeatable tactic. Dexerto’s report and reproduced post provide the account.
Where does Brogan appear in Starfield?
Brogan appears early in the game, during the opening mission, “One Small Step.” The opening begins with the player working as a miner at the Argos Extractors Mining Outpost with Heller and Supervisor Lin. After mining nearby resources, the player encounters an Artifact, experiences a vision, and reaches character customization. The sequence then brings in Barrett and Vasco, leads to a pirate fight, and continues to Kreet, where Captain Brogan is encountered. Starfield DB’s opening walkthrough outlines that progression.

In its account, Dexerto says Brogan can be killed or approached in conversation. It does not document every possible outcome or establish the grenade throw as a reliable approach to the encounter.

Separate alternate-start options have been described for players who want a different beginning, but their current availability and compatibility should be checked in the live listings and release notes.
