What is Shattered Space?
Shattered Space is Bethesda’s first major expansion for Starfield. Bethesda’s announcement places the story on Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of House Va’ruun, where a vortex has devastated the city of Dazra and thrown the faction into chaos. Steam describes the DLC as a new story expansion with a cosmic threat, a new planet, and unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear; those are publisher and store descriptions, not independent assessments of the experience.

The launch-period number was reported in an October 3, 2024 Reddit repost. The later all-time and recent-window figures were visible on Steam’s Shattered Space listing at research time in 2026. Because Steam ratings are live and volatile, these later figures are dated snapshots rather than permanent scores.
Why are the reviews mixed?
The available figures establish what Steam’s review labels were at particular moments, but they do not explain why individual players responded positively or negatively. They also do not establish a critic score. Does Shattered Space require Starfield?

A physical Xbox Standard Edition purchase includes the Starfield game disc, according to Bethesda’s editions page. That is a physical copy of the base game, not a disc or physical copy of the Shattered Space expansion.

The review snapshots alone cannot answer that for every player: they show how Steam users rated the DLC at specific times, not what any particular player will enjoy. The practical decision is first whether you own or plan to obtain Starfield, since the expansion depends on the base game. Then use the dated Steam review window that matters to you rather than assuming the 2024 launch label still describes the current aggregate.
