Starfield update 1.14.70 was announced for September 30, 2024, alongside the launch of Shattered Space. It was a broad game update—not just an expansion download—with Creation Kit tools, performance and visual changes, and fixes across quests, ship building, the REV-8, menus, and audio. Bethesda’s page is headed with September 30 but displays September 17 as its page date; the publisher’s Steam announcement also gives September 30 in its title.

How 1.14.70 relates to Shattered Space

Bethesda described update 1.14.70 as arriving with Starfield’s first story expansion, Shattered Space, which takes players to the handcrafted home world of House Va’ruun. The update and expansion are separate: the update changes the game, while Xbox lists the Standard Edition as the base game and Shattered Space as a separate add-on. Bethesda’s announcement says players can “Embark on a journey to the handcrafted home world of House Va’ruun and unravel the mysteries surrounding the elusive followers of the Great Serpent.”

The release date is September 30, 2024, as stated in Bethesda’s official patch notes and its Steam announcement. The Bethesda page separately displays September 17, 2024 as its page date; the available announcements do not explain the difference. These sources establish the details of 1.14.70, not the current Starfield version in 2026.

What changed in the update

Creation Kit and general improvements

For Creation Kit users, the notes announce automation for making models for distant level of detail (Distant LOD). Bethesda also says it removed the previous limit of 255 loaded Creations. Other general changes include performance and stability improvements, lighting enhancements, visual improvements and fixes to weapon models, and adjustments to player headtracking and the camera. The camera change is intended to stop it from jostling when the player jumps.

Gameplay and quests

Gameplay fixes address the Annihilator Particle Beam’s damage-over-time effect on companions and EM weapons’ damage against robots and turrets. The update also adds a Boom Pop! Dynamite crafting recipe, fixes repeated Autumn Macmillan dialogue, and changes crowd behavior near The Well elevator when combat starts.

The quest fixes cover a wide range of missions, including Brownout, Due In Full, Eye Witness, Hostile Intelligence, In Memoriam, Legacy’s End, One Giant Leap, One Small Step, Rook Meets King, The Best There Is, and The Showdown. Bethesda also lists fixes for Leader of the Pack, Managing Assets, Revelation, and Rough Landings.

Locations, ship building, and the REV-8

Location fixes include texture and collision corrections and fixes for out-of-bounds areas at multiple sites. In the ship builder, players can now toggle Flip Merge behavior. The notes also list fixes for ship-builder audio and crashes, as well as an issue that allowed non-sellable ships to be sold.

REV-8 changes cover controller behavior, wheel visual effects, timing in the favorites menu, health and nameplate display, look sensitivity, companion seating, interior-map icons, lights after loading a save, and fast-travel distance. The vehicle’s look-sensitivity setting is a practical example for players who found its camera movement too fast or slow.

Menus and audio

The broad UI fixes include Xbox frame-rate setting behavior, Large Font Mode issues, ship-registration costs, cargo-mass display, scanner and map markers, Creation availability prompts, and healing-item previews. Audio changes increase center-channel use on surround setups and fix repeated power-allocation sounds and inconsistencies in voice filtering.

Base game and expansion access

Xbox’s Starfield listing identifies Xbox Series X|S and Windows and presents the Standard Edition as the base game; it lists Shattered Space separately as an add-on. That distinction matters if you are checking what you own: owning the base game and installing an update are not the same as owning the story expansion. The listing supports those edition and platform details, but it does not establish a complete platform-by-platform rollout schedule for update 1.14.70.
