If Starfield pauses or does nothing when you try to use a workbench, sit in a chair, or take the pilot’s seat, first check whether the failure affects one object or interactions across the game. Players have reported both patterns, but the reports do not establish one cause or a guaranteed fix. Try the low-risk steps below, and distinguish them from the specific issues Bethesda has officially patched.
What the interaction problem looks like
Players have described pressing the interact control on a chair or crafting station and getting a pause or no action. Reports establish that this has happened, not how common it is or whether each case shares the same cause. Some reports concern particular chairs or stations; others describe wider interaction trouble.
Before changing anything, note whether the interaction prompt appears and test a few different objects. Check whether the problem is limited to one placed workbench, affects chairs or ship seats, or also prevents using doors, NPCs, and other activatable objects. Record your platform and game version, and whether the issue began after changing views, updating the game, or installing or updating Creations or mods. These clues help narrow what to try, but they do not prove a diagnosis. - Change your view. Switch between first-person and third-person, then try interacting again. Community coverage mentions this workaround, but does not establish how often it succeeds. PiunikaWeb’s report
- Reposition and aim at the object. Equip a weapon, aim at the chair or station, and use the activate control. Steam and Reddit users reported that aiming helped in their cases. One Steam user also said shooting the object restored interaction; do not make shooting a first-line step, since the result may depend on the object and could cause other consequences. - If the failure began after a Creations or mod change, test cautiously. Community accounts associate some broad interaction failures with UI mods, but they do not establish that mods explain the older chair and workbench reports. - For one affected outpost workbench, consider replacement only as a last resort. Community coverage mentions deleting and rebuilding the station, but does not establish that this will work or what it may mean for stored materials and nearby construction. What Bethesda has—and has not—said in patch notes
Bethesda’s official notes document related issues, but the listed fixes are narrower than the full symptom of being unable to use chairs or workbenches.

Use the pattern to decide what to investigate next
- One workbench fails, but other objects work: Focus on that station and its placement. Replacing an outpost workbench is a last-resort community suggestion, not a confirmed solution.
- Chairs or ship seats fail, especially after changing view: Bethesda’s May 2025 note covers a possible control lock tied specifically to changing views while sitting in a landed pilot seat. It does not establish that your symptom has the same cause.
- Many unrelated objects fail: Check whether the issue began after an update or a Creations/mod change. Community discussion makes those useful context to investigate, not proven causes.
If the cautious steps do not help, keep the save and note the exact objects affected, whether prompts appear, your platform and game version, and any recent changes. That gives you a clearer report to share through Bethesda’s support channels than describing the issue only as a broken workbench.
