Contemporary reports said it was cracked shortly after release. It was not the only Starfield DLSS-related mod: reporting distinguished it from a free DLSS 2.0/XeSS upscaler and a separate free frame-generation option.
What the controversy was about
PureDark released Starfield upscaling mods during the game’s launch period. The dispute centered on the separate DLSS 3.5 and Frame Generation version, which contemporary coverage said was offered through a $5 Patreon subscription and protected by DRM. PC Gamer reported on September 5, 2023, that the DRM-protected mod had been cracked and removed by a cracking website; Ars Technica also reported that cracks had been released. The headline’s “within hours” wording reflects contemporary reporting, not independently verified timing.
That distinction matters: coverage described a free DLSS 2.0 or Intel XeSS option as well as the paid frame-generation release. The paid controversy was not about every mod or upscaler associated with Starfield. PC Gamer’s September 2023 report and Ars Technica’s coverage describe the contemporary dispute.
What the paid version offered—and what it cost
PC Gamer described PureDark’s free release as supporting DLSS 2.0 or XeSS, while the separate DLSS 3.5 and Frame Generation mod was offered for a $5 Patreon subscription. That is the price reported in 2023 coverage, not a statement of current availability or pricing. The options were not identical: the paid release was the one associated with Frame Generation in the reports.

Why the DRM became part of the dispute
On September 13, 2023, PureDark said former subscribers could cancel and later authenticate to receive a token and updates without resubscribing. He said DRM allowed him to stop restricting downloads by Patreon roles while still allowing former subscribers to receive updates. Those are the creator’s account of how the system worked, not independent technical verification.
PureDark also acknowledged the reputational downside, writing: “DRM is obviously bad for reputation since a lot of people keep demonizing what I did.” That statement records his view of the reaction; it does not resolve the arguments over paid mods, access, or DRM. His September 13 post contains the explanation.

What free alternatives were reported?
PC Gamer also noted a free LukeFZ frame-generation mod. Its Nexus Mods listing describes replacing FSR2 with DLSS 3 and DLSS-G. The listing says the Frame Generation portion requires an RTX 40-series graphics card; the rest can be used with any card that supports DLSS.
The listing was last updated September 18, 2023. It does not establish that the mod remains available or compatible with current Starfield versions, so treat the stated requirements as a description of that historical listing rather than a current compatibility guarantee.

On September 13, 2023, Bethesda Game Studios listed “Nvidia DLSS Support (PC)” among planned community-requested features. Its announcement also said built-in Creations support across platforms was planned for early 2024. These were plans stated at that time, not evidence that Bethesda was responding directly to PureDark’s DRM dispute or a current audit of Starfield’s features. Bethesda’s dated announcement is the source for those plans.
