What makes the game stand out?
The official listing describes an online co-op FPS for up to 16 players, with cross-platform multiplayer. Its appeal is the scale and interaction of the battles: squads fight swarms of bugs, build defenses, and try to hold objectives together. The Steam listing is the source for the player limit and multiplayer features.

Rick Lane’s PC Gamer review highlighted how construction and defense combine with class roles and large battles. He also noted that bug corpses persist and visibly reshape the battlefield, giving a fight a sense of accumulating consequences. Those systems can produce improvised squad stories and tense last stands—especially when players coordinate rather than treat each mission as a straightforward run-and-gun shooter.
What did critics criticize?
Polish and technical performance
In his October 2024 review, Lane described rough movement and animations, muddy presentation, and frame-rate drops on his test PC. These are observations from one review and one historical test setup—not a measurement of every machine or the game’s current performance. His PC used a Ryzen 5 3600, GeForce RTX 2080 Super, 32 GB of RAM, and Windows 10. The review marked Steam Deck unsupported at the time; that historical note is not a current compatibility check. The solo campaign
The same review found the solo experience underdeveloped, with weak AI companions. If you mainly want a substantial single-player campaign, that is a meaningful warning: the game’s strongest case is its cooperative battles, not a polished solo adventure.

The 2024 review should be read in the context of a game that continued to receive updates. Official announcements show that Update 12 arrived in the August 2026 update cycle, with the X-11 map expansion and new mission content. An August 13 roadmap projected Update 13 for October 2026, including the Hopper Bug, and Update 14 by mid-December. Those dates were announced targets, not confirmation that the updates shipped; the roadmap is available in the official Steam Community announcements.

Earlier in 2026, PC Gamer reported that Patch 1.10 added the Marauder M-11E Babar mech, the TW-7 Liberator revolver, and Hope’s Retreat. At that time, the Babar was accessible through a randomly appearing mutator, and Offworld said it planned additional ways to earn access. These additions establish that the game has kept evolving, but update history alone cannot show whether every criticism in the 2024 review has been fixed. The critic score is still useful for understanding the launch-era weaknesses; it should not be mistaken for a new technical test of the 2026 version.
Who should play Starship Troopers: Extermination?
- Good fit: You want big online battles, squad coordination, class-based roles, and the added pressure of building and defending a base.
- Consider carefully: You are sensitive to rough presentation or performance issues. The cited technical criticism comes from a 2024 PC review, so check current player feedback for your platform and hardware before deciding.
- Probably not the right fit: Your priority is a strong solo campaign. The available critic assessment specifically faulted the single-player experience.
For a practical decision, treat the Steam overall rating as evidence that many English-language reviewers have liked the game, and the recent Mixed rating as a reason to look at newer comments before buying. Neither figure tells you whether the game performs well on your setup, and neither represents console players.
