If State of Decay 2 co-op is not working, first check Xbox service status, enable Multiplayer in the game’s Settings, and make sure everyone is signed into the Xbox account they use for play. If a PC player cannot host, update Gaming Services from Microsoft Store, restart the PC, and try again. The game supports cross-play and up to three guests, but its peer-to-peer sessions depend on the host’s connection.
Start with the four checks most likely to uncover the problem
- Check Xbox service status. Look for an outage before changing game or network settings. The official State of Decay multiplayer support page directs players to Xbox service status as an early check.
- Enable Multiplayer in State of Decay 2. Open the game’s Settings and confirm Multiplayer is turned on. The setting must be enabled for the affected player.
- Confirm everyone is signed into an Xbox account. Cross-play works across platforms and storefronts when players use Xbox accounts. Exchange Xbox gamertags so you can find one another. On PC, open Xbox Game Bar with Windows + G to invite or join friends.
- If a PC player cannot host, update Gaming Services. In Microsoft Store, open Library, select Get updates, then restart the PC before trying to host again. This is the official PC-specific troubleshooting step.
Check compatibility and the player limit
State of Decay 2 supports cross-play across platforms and storefronts, so players do not all need to own the game through the same store. Each player still needs to be signed into the Xbox account used for the game. A session accommodates one host and up to three guests—four players total—according to the official support page and Xbox product page.

Use the host to diagnose disconnects and poor session quality
Undead Labs describes multiplayer as peer-to-peer: session quality depends on the host’s internet connection, and guests are tethered so they cannot stray too far from the host. That means a session can feel unstable or restrictive even when invitations work.
As a diagnostic test, have the other player host and see whether the same group connects more reliably. This comparison is an inference from the documented host dependency, not a guaranteed fix or an officially prescribed step. If the problem follows one host, that points toward the host’s connection as a factor; it does not by itself identify the cause.

If the basic checks do not work
Compare both players’ setup
- Are both players signed into the Xbox accounts associated with their games?
- Is Multiplayer enabled for each player?
- Are you using the correct Xbox gamertags when inviting across platforms or storefronts?
- Which player is hosting, and does switching hosts change the result?
- If the PC player is hosting, have they updated Gaming Services and restarted?
- Are Xbox services currently available?
Treat older PC and router tips as secondary possibilities
An older Undead Labs support article from January 2019 mentioned checking internet connectivity and host settings, avoiding excessive Alt+Tab use on PC because it could suspend the game and end a session, and investigating router settings or third-party antivirus. These are dated suggestions, not current guaranteed fixes. Avoid changing router or security settings without understanding the effect on your network and device.
Find the game version and community help
The official support page explains how to find the installed game version and points players to the State of Decay Discord and subreddit for discussion. It also says direct support ticket intake is closed; the page reports that the game received its final content update in October 2024. Those details can help when comparing reports, but they do not establish that a current widespread multiplayer fault exists.

What to do if a paid subscription seems to be the issue
The older 2019 support article mentioned an Xbox Live Gold requirement for Xbox One, but subscription policies can change. The current official troubleshooting information cited here does not establish today’s platform subscription requirements. Check the current Xbox policy for your platform and region rather than relying on the older requirement.
