To build a stable community in State of Decay 2, check what your survivors and stockpiles need before spending resources, then choose missions and facilities that address the most urgent problem. There is no single best base plan: your roster, supplies, and chosen difficulty all affect what makes sense.
Start each session by checking the community’s needs
At home, review stockpiles, morale, survivor condition, daily consumption, and any visible interpersonal problems before committing resources. Xbox Game Help advises players to “Keep an eye on your stockpiles as the strength of your supplies directly impacts your community’s morale.” Low supplies can therefore become a morale problem, not just a reason to go scavenging.

Pick the most pressing shortfall first. If supplies are dwindling, a supply run may matter more than a comfort upgrade; if survivors are worn down or hurt, sending them farther from home may compound the problem. Check the dashboard again after missions, since needs change as the community uses supplies and brings in new ones.
Match facilities to the problem you need to solve
Facilities have different jobs, and constructing, upgrading, or repairing them uses resources or Influence. Choose based on the benefit you need now, the cost shown in-game, and whether your survivors can make good use of the facility. A facility catalog last updated in 2018 describes examples such as a Workshop for crafting explosives and repairing weapons, an Infirmary for treating Blood Plague and crafting a cure, food facilities that produce food, and morale facilities that improve morale. Treat these as examples, not a current build prescription: check the facility’s present in-game description before spending, because older descriptions and output figures may no longer match your version.

- Short on food? Consider a food-producing option if its current cost and output fit your situation.
- Need to maintain equipment? A Workshop may help with weapon repair and crafting, as described in the older facility guide.
- Concerned about illness? An Infirmary’s listed functions include Blood Plague treatment and cure crafting; confirm its current description and requirements.
- Morale is the immediate concern? Compare a morale facility with other ways to address the cause, including improving supplies.
Before choosing, compare immediate benefit, resource or Influence cost, any ongoing demands, and the skills or labor your roster can provide. Your base and community conditions determine the trade-off; no option is compulsory for every player.
Use your survivors as a varied roster
Survivors are not interchangeable. The official game description emphasizes their distinct skills, personalities, and burdens. Skills improve through use and can be specialized, while traits and skills can affect what a survivor can do and how you plan the community.

When choosing someone for an outing, consider their current condition as well as their useful skills. Rotate characters rather than pushing one survivor through every task: a tired character can return home to rest while someone else takes the next trip. As your roster changes, reassess who is best suited to explore, scavenge, or handle other responsibilities.
Choose missions around readiness and community needs
Scavenging and helping neighbors are among the mission types described in the Xbox manual. The manual’s advice is direct: “Decide which missions to take based on your community’s needs.” Some opportunities are time-sensitive, so weigh their likely benefit against the community’s current supplies and the condition of the survivor you would send.

- Identify the shortage or problem the mission could address.
- Check whether the selected survivor is in good enough condition for the outing and has useful skills.
- Consider the risk and value of the opportunity against other urgent needs.
- Return tired survivors to base to rest, then reassess the community before choosing what to do next.
Influence earned through activity can be used to access supplies and favors, according to Xbox Game Help. That makes missions part of both immediate problem-solving and longer-term community planning.
Keep vehicles useful and pay attention to nearby infestations
Vehicles support supply runs, but they are limited and noisy, according to the Xbox manual. A beginner guide recommends keeping them maintained with repair kits and gasoline. Plan trips with those constraints in mind rather than assuming a vehicle makes every expedition safe or effortless.

The same guide recommends clearing nearby infestations to reduce base threat and improve morale. Treat that as a useful security consideration, not a guarantee that the base will be safe. Decide whether tackling an infestation is worth the risk given your survivors’ condition and the community’s other needs.

State of Decay 2 supports varied survivors and customizable difficulty, scarcity, and danger, so a priority that works for one community may not suit another. Revisit stockpiles, condition, morale, and facility descriptions after significant outings or changes to the roster. For each proposed build or mission, ask what current need it addresses, what it costs, whether your survivors can support it, and whether it fits your difficulty and supply situation.
