Choose State of Decay 2 if you want to build a survivor community, gather supplies, improve a base, and bring friends into structured co-op. Choose DayZ if you want an open-world survival sandbox where the environment and unpredictable encounters with other players shape each run. That distinction, drawn from the games’ official descriptions, is more useful than looking for an overall winner.
How the survival experience differs
State of Decay 2: keep a community going
State of Decay 2 puts community decisions at the center of survival. You scavenge, maintain shelters, manage a roster of survivors, and navigate relationships with neighboring groups. Its loop gives you concrete responsibilities and a developing home base, rather than asking you to make your way through the world entirely as an individual. Undead Labs’ official game page describes survival as shaped by those choices and relationships.

DayZ: survive whatever the world throws at you
DayZ is presented by Bohemia Interactive as a gritty open-world survival horror hybrid-MMO. Its landscape, limited in-game guidance, and high consequences for failure make survival less directed; other players can be allies, dangers, or something in between. If you enjoy uncertainty and emergent stories more than a defined community-management loop, this is the closer fit. Bohemia’s FAQ outlines that approach.
How multiplayer works
State of Decay 2: co-op around a host
State of Decay 2 supports solo play or co-op for up to four players total. Its multiplayer is peer-to-peer: the host’s connection quality matters, and guests are tethered to the host rather than free to roam the whole map independently. The official support FAQ says cross-play works across platforms and storefronts using Xbox accounts. Steam also lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, and requires a free Xbox Live account for its listing of the game. Steam’s listing provides those PC storefront details.

DayZ: player encounters are part of the survival tension
DayZ’s multiplayer appeal is less about a built-in co-op group activity and more about what happens when you meet other people in the world. That uncertainty can make cooperation meaningful, but it also means you cannot count on every encounter being friendly.
For cross-platform play, check the exact devices and server pools before buying. Bohemia’s FAQ, posted in 2018, says PC and consoles use separate servers and describes cross-platform play as unlikely; because that guidance is old, it should not be treated as a definitive statement about every current platform pairing. How much structure do you want?
State of Decay 2 gives players more defined modes alongside its community-focused survival game. The Juggernaut Edition includes Heartland, a story-oriented return to Trumbull Valley, and Daybreak, a mode where up to four players defend against waves of undead. Xbox’s edition page also lists the Independence add-ons. Check the platform’s current listing for the exact edition contents. Xbox’s listing describes the edition and its four-player co-op limit.
DayZ offers a looser sandbox experience: exploration and survival are shaped by the world and by player decisions, with little in-game guidance. Its official FAQ says modding is supported on PC. It does not establish equivalent official mod support on consoles, so PC modding should be a specific reason to choose the PC version, not an assumption about every platform.

Platforms, accounts, and what to verify
- State of Decay 2: If buying through Steam, its listing says a free Xbox Live account is required. Its support FAQ provides the clearer cross-play guidance for mixed-platform groups, subject to the peer-to-peer and tethering setup.
- DayZ: The official FAQ identifies PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, but its 2018 cross-play guidance may no longer settle compatibility for a particular pair of devices. Verify the current platform and server support for your group before purchasing.
Do not rely on old DLC prices when comparing cost. In its May 27, 2024 Update 1.25 announcement, Bohemia said Livonia became included with the base game from that point forward. Regional store packaging and prices can change, so check the current storefront for the edition you plan to buy.

There is no objective winner between the two: they make survival compelling in different ways. Pick State of Decay 2 for community-building and more explicitly structured co-op; pick DayZ for a less guided world where other players are an unpredictable part of the challenge.
