To start State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition with Xbox Game Pass, first confirm that the game is included for your account in your local Xbox app or store. Then start on a forgiving difficulty, play the tutorial, and focus on keeping your survivors supplied before tackling the campaign’s biggest threats.
Confirm Game Pass access and install the game
The Xbox listing presents State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition as playable with Game Pass and lists Xbox and PC as platforms. Install and launch it from the Xbox app or your console’s store. If a PC installation or download fails, Undead Labs suggests opening Microsoft Store Library and selecting Get Updates, or trying the Xbox app or the game’s Microsoft Store product page. What should you do first?
Choose a starting pair and play the tutorial
At the opening, choose your starting survivor pair and follow the tutorial and its objective markers. That initial pair carries into the main game. Undead Labs recommends the tutorial for a first run: it introduces combat, scavenging, character inventory, and blood plague. Early objectives are marked with orange exclamation indicators.

Stabilize your community before rushing ahead
The campaign asks you to build up a community, choose a leader, and eventually prepare to eliminate the blood plague by destroying plague hearts. The practical first priority is keeping the group from falling into crisis: gather supplies, establish a sustainable base, and pay attention to threats such as zombies and starvation. You can set your pace rather than racing straight toward plague hearts. The State of Decay 2 Player Guide describes community-building as the opening focus.

Which difficulty should you choose?
State of Decay 2 has five named difficulty levels and lets you adjust Action, Community, and Maps separately. Those settings affect different kinds of pressure: combat, the demands of maintaining your community, and map or scavenging conditions. The following descriptions summarize the official options; choosing Green or Standard for a first run is guidance based on those descriptions, not a tested ranking.

For a first campaign, Green is a reasonable choice if learning the systems matters more than pressure; Standard is an alternative if you want to begin without the explicitly more relaxed setting. Learn the community systems as you scavenge
This is a survival game about more than fighting. Survivors have different skills and burdens, and your choices about scavenging, supplies, and where to live shape how the community copes. Build a stable foundation before taking on larger campaign threats; choose a leader once the group is ready. The player guide identifies four campaign leader types, while the official game overview describes scavenging, building and fortifying bases, and managing survivors.
Play solo first or invite friends?
Co-op is optional. The official game page describes four-player co-op; Undead Labs support clarifies that up to three other players can join a host. Multiplayer requires it to be enabled and an Xbox account, and the support page describes cross-play. Unlike single-player, multiplayer cannot be paused, so expect to coordinate with other players rather than stopping the session whenever you need to check something.

If you want to learn the tutorial and community routines at your own pace, begin solo. If friends are joining, agree on when to explore or return to base, since the session cannot be paused. Details are in Undead Labs support and the accessibility guide.

If the default controls are uncomfortable, open Settings > Controls > Remap Controls. Some Xbox controller buttons cannot be remapped: the right stick, View, and Menu buttons. Explore the available accessibility settings as needed; single-player can be paused while multiplayer cannot. The official accessibility page lists settings and difficulty options.

What else is included in Juggernaut Edition?
The official overview lists two additional modes. Heartland is a story-driven return to Trumbull Valley; Daybreak has up to four players face waves of undead. Both are included in Juggernaut Edition, but neither is necessary for your first campaign session. Learn the basic survival and community loop first, then try them if their format appeals to you: State of Decay 2 official game page.
Is State of Decay 2 still receiving new content?
Undead Labs says the game received its final content update in October 2024. Its support pages remain useful for onboarding and troubleshooting, but do not expect new content updates based on that notice: Undead Labs support.
