Released July 23, 2024, the update also brought Curveball changes, cosmetic rewards, quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. It was not a new release in 2024’s later coverage: Undead Labs subsequently called Update 38 the game’s final update.
What did the Red Cross collaboration add?
The special enclave mission arc centers on a group whose members are missing or critically injured after a skirmish. Helping them unlocks three cosmetic items: the Blood Donors Jacket, Blood Donor Basic Tee and Blood Nurse Basic Tee. The story incorporates information about blood donation, while the collaboration’s real-world appeal directs players to the American Red Cross campaign at redcrossblood.org/sod. In that interview, Undead Labs representative Wonder Stormbreaker said the bloodmobile became permanently available in the game and its trunk storage increased from 9 to 15. Those are details reported in the interview, rather than results of independent testing. Stormbreaker described the collaboration this way: “It is about community. It’s about surviving together. You’re helping each other.”
How can players donate blood through the campaign?
The game’s storyline and a real-world donation are separate actions: playing State of Decay 2 does not itself donate blood. The campaign points people to the Red Cross to learn about donating and take any next steps. The interview identifies redcrossblood.org/sod as the campaign-specific page; for current appointment, eligibility and donation information, consult the Red Cross directly, since those details can change.

American Red Cross representative Betsy Robertson said in the 2024 interview that an earlier collaboration, which she described as having happened “a couple of years ago,” was associated with 60,000 first-time donors and more than 800,000 units of blood collected. The interview does not give a precise reporting period, and these figures were not attributed to Update 37.
What else came with Update 37?
“A Light in the Dark” also introduced new Curveball events and a control panel for tailoring them, along with customizations, challenges, quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. Curveballs are world-changing modifiers that can arise randomly or in response to player actions, according to the official announcement.

Was Update 37 the last State of Decay 2 update?
No. Update 37 arrived on July 23, 2024. On October 22, 2024, Undead Labs described Update 38 as the final update for State of Decay 2 and said the team was shifting its focus to State of Decay 3. Undead Labs’ Update 38 announcement provides that later timeline.
