What is confirmed about State of Decay 3?
Undead Labs said on September 22, 2026 that State of Decay 3 remains in active development, is in alpha, and is targeted for release in 2027. The studio also said it was continuing toward a previously announced closed-beta milestone before the end of 2026. That is a target, not a dated launch commitment.

Xbox Wire reported on August 26, 2026 that closed beta playtests were planned before year-end and that registration was open for a chance to be selected. The article described feedback from alpha testers; registration does not guarantee a place in a test. See the Xbox Wire playtest announcement.
Undead Labs’ September announcement also said the studio had completed its separation from Xbox and become independent and employee-owned. It reiterated Xbox, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation as planned access points; it did not say the studio change altered the game’s platform plans.

What has been announced about State of Decay 3’s gameplay?
In a June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Creative Director Kevin Patzelt described several intended changes. These give a picture of the design direction, but should not be treated as a guarantee that every detail will appear unchanged in the finished game.

A shared world with asynchronous progress
The announced co-op supports solo play or up to four players in a shared world. Players sharing a save can make changes and progress at different times, rather than needing to be online together for every session. The developers also described building facilities and developing as many as three bases.
A larger open play space
Patzelt said the playable space for an individual would be “about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.” The comparison is to one map, not the entire area of State of Decay 2. He described it as open to the player from the start of a session. This is a developer estimate, not an independently measured map-size comparison.

Enclaves, Plague Nests, and combat
Enclaves are NPC survivor groups players can work with, befriend, ally with, and recruit. Plague Nests are described as evolving hubs for enemy encounters that react to player actions and may behave differently between runs. Patzelt also said the combat system adds a second melee-attack button compared with State of Decay 2.
Scavenging and crafting
The announced design emphasizes a “maker culture,” including altered weapons and a risk-and-reward loop in which dangerous Plague Nest areas can offer better loot. These details come from the developers’ design description, not a final specification. The full interview is on Xbox Wire.

What can you play in State of Decay 2 now?
State of Decay 2 originally released in 2018 and was remastered as State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition in 2020, according to Undead Labs. The official page describes a community-survival loop built around scavenging, recruiting survivors, managing a community, and fighting with melee and ranged weapons while dealing with Blood Plague threats. It also describes multiple map environments and adjustable difficulty, scarcity, and danger.
Co-op and included modes
Four-player co-op lets friends join a player’s community for scavenging and combat. Juggernaut Edition includes Heartland, a story-driven return to Trumbull Valley, and Daybreak, a four-player mode focused on surviving waves. The official page links to the game on Steam and Xbox.

Which game should you choose?
- Play State of Decay 2 now if you want an available community-survival game with scavenging, survivor management, four-player co-op, and the included Heartland and Daybreak modes.
- Wait for State of Decay 3 if its announced shared-save co-op, larger playable space, evolving Plague Nests, or three-base progression are the specific features you want. Its release is still targeted for 2027, and its systems are in development.
State of Decay 3 platforms and Game Pass plans
Official material has listed Xbox Series X|S, PC, Game Pass, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire’s June and August 2026 coverage also listed cloud and Steam, while the Xbox product page lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 and says day-one Game Pass availability is planned. These are announced plans, so check the Xbox product listing and current studio updates near release for the latest platform and access details.
