There is no single best Steam replacement for every PC player. The right choice depends on the specific game and edition, your country’s checkout price, refund eligibility, required client, DRM and download format. Epic Games Store is a broad digital storefront available on PC, Mac and Android worldwide; GOG offers a curated catalog with an optional gaming client; itch.io is an open marketplace built around independent creators and highly varied releases.
Use the same-game comparison method in this guide: find the exact edition, compare the final regional price, read the title’s file and DRM notes, and confirm the store’s current refund rules before paying.

The short answer: which Steam alternative fits you?
Choose an alternative by the kind of catalog and ownership experience you want, not by a universal ranking.
- Choose Epic Games Store when the game you want is there and you prefer a conventional large storefront, with Epic’s stated worldwide availability on PC, Mac and Android.
- Choose GOG when its curated catalog has the title or edition you want and an optional client suits your setup. Check the individual listing for DRM, offline play and file requirements rather than assuming every GOG release behaves the same way.
- Choose itch.io for independent, experimental, niche or creator-led games. Authors set prices and sales, and projects can differ substantially in installers, updates, multiplayer support and DRM.
For any purchase, compare the same edition in the same region. A lower headline price can disappear after taxes, currency conversion, missing DLC or a different build. Store policies and catalogs change, so open the current product page and refund policy at checkout.

What to compare before leaving Steam
A store is only useful if it delivers the release you actually want. Check these factors in order.
| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game and edition | Base game, deluxe edition, DLC, soundtrack, bonus files and supported operating system | Different stores may carry different builds or bundles, and a title may be absent from one storefront. |
| Checkout price | Your country, currency, taxes, regional pricing and the current sale end date | The same nominal price can produce a different final total by region or edition. |
| Refund eligibility | The store’s current conditions, time window, play-time limit and exclusions | Refund rules are store-specific; one platform’s policy cannot be applied to another. |
| Client requirement | Whether a launcher is required, optional or unnecessary for downloading and updating | An optional client can be convenient, while a mandatory client changes how you install and manage the game. |
| DRM and offline behavior | The product page’s DRM statement, activation steps and whether offline launch is documented | Store-level descriptions do not guarantee identical behavior for every title. |
| Download files | Installer type, architecture, language packs, patch method and backup options | Independent releases may provide a zip, a standalone installer or several platform-specific files. |
| Discovery route | Catalog search, editorial collections, tags, recommendations or creator pages | Each storefront exposes different kinds of games and makes different titles easy to find. |
Epic Games Store
What it is
Epic Games Store is a conventional digital storefront for buying and downloading games. Epic’s FAQ states that the store is available worldwide on PC, Mac and Android. That is a statement about storefront availability, not a promise that every individual game supports every one of those platforms. Always read the game’s own operating-system and hardware requirements.
When Epic is a practical Steam alternative
Epic makes sense when a particular game, edition or publisher release is available there and the checkout total works for you. Its familiar store-and-library model is easier for players who want a single account, an integrated download process and a standard commercial catalog rather than browsing thousands of small creator pages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not assume that a title’s Epic version includes the same DLC, bonus content, multiplayer interoperability or mod support as a version sold elsewhere. Compare the product description, edition name and included items line by line.
Epic’s conditional refund rule
Epic’s FAQ describes refunds for eligible products marked refundable or self-refundable. The request must be made within 14 days of purchase, and the recorded runtime must be under two hours. The FAQ also lists exclusions, including some products marked non-refundable and consumables.
These are conditions, not an automatic guarantee. A product can be excluded even if you have played for less than two hours, and eligibility can depend on the product label and your region. Check the current product and account policy before purchase, especially for add-ons, consumable items and unusual editions.
Trials and temporary access
Epic says some publishers offer trials for certain non-free games. A trial ends when its stated trial period ends; access does not become a permanent copy merely because you installed it. Read the trial terms and note whether progress, DLC or multiplayer access carries over to a paid version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open the exact game edition and confirm Windows, macOS or other listed support.
- Check the final regional price, taxes and sale expiry at checkout.
- Look for the refundable or self-refundable label before paying.
- Read any trial, consumable or add-on restrictions.
- After purchase, record the account and launcher required to reinstall the game.
GOG
What it is
GOG describes itself as a digital distribution platform with a curated selection of games and an optional gaming client. That combination appeals to buyers who want a more selective catalog and the ability to use the client when it helps, rather than treating the client as the only way to interact with every purchase.

Why the individual listing matters
A GOG-wide description does not establish identical DRM, offline behavior or client requirements for every game. Check the title page for the actual installer, activation instructions, supported operating systems, multiplayer dependencies and update method. A game may be downloadable without the client while still relying on an external service for online features, or it may have title-specific requirements not visible in a store slogan.
Do not infer that one release’s offline behavior applies to another release from the same publisher. Verify the exact edition, language pack and bonus-content list you intend to buy.
Using the optional client
The client can simplify library management, updates and installation, but “optional” describes GOG’s platform arrangement; it does not erase requirements imposed by a particular game. If you plan to keep installers as backups, find the standalone downloads and read the game’s update instructions before deleting them. If you rely on online multiplayer, check whether the title requires a separate account or service.

- Open the game’s requirements and delivery details instead of relying on the platform description.
- Check whether the client is optional for this release and whether online features need another service.

- Save the purchase receipt and any standalone installers you intend to use for recovery.
itch.io
An open marketplace for independent creators
itch.io calls itself an open marketplace for independent digital creators, with a focus on independent video games. Its model gives creators substantial control: authors set prices, run sales and use a configurable revenue-share arrangement. That openness produces unusual, experimental and very small projects alongside polished commercial releases, but it also means that two listings can have completely different support and delivery practices.
DRM-free files: useful, but not universal
The itch.io buyer FAQ says: “Most itch.io releases come with DRM-free builds along with extra keys, when the game is also available on Steam.” The important word is most. Treat this as a qualified platform statement, not a guarantee for every project. Inspect the individual download section for the operating system, installer or archive format, update process and any external activation requirement.
Some content is available nowhere else, according to the same FAQ. An itch.io page can therefore be the only legitimate place to obtain a particular prototype, creator edition, bonus build or experimental game. Conversely, a project may be unfinished, have limited support or provide only one platform’s files. Read the project description and comments before paying for a release that lacks the usual storefront metadata.
How itch.io pricing works
itch.io supports pay-what-you-want pricing above a minimum, and that minimum may be zero. Creators can change prices and run sales, so the amount shown today may not be permanent.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is an important ownership distinction. The pricing documentation says a paid purchase grants ownership and a download key. Taking a free download without paying does not make the user an owner. If you want future owner benefits associated with a purchase, such as access to a purchase library or a key where offered, complete the transaction rather than treating a zero-price download as equivalent to buying.

Creator-controlled support and updates
Because creators control their projects, inspect the page for changelogs, support contact, update notes, controller information and multiplayer instructions. A downloadable zip may need manual replacement when a new version arrives; another project may provide an installer or a client-assisted update. Neither approach is inherently better, but you should know which one you are accepting before checkout.
Finding games on itch.io: search is not browse
itch.io separates publishing a project from having it appear in Search and Browse. Its documentation describes title search as a route optimized for direct searches, while tags support browse discovery. A creator can publish a page without meeting the criteria for indexing in the discovery areas.
Use direct title search when you know the game
Search the exact title, creator name or a distinctive phrase when you are trying to reach a project you already heard about. This route is less dependent on the project’s tags and reduces the chance of mistaking a similarly named game for the intended release.
Use tags and Browse for exploration
Browse through tags when you want a genre, theme, mechanic or format rather than one known title. Tag quality varies because projects are creator-labeled, so open several pages and read descriptions instead of assuming that every result has the same scope or maturity.
Why a published page may be hard to find
itch.io’s creator guidelines describe eligibility requirements for discovery indexing and say pages can be removed from the discovery index if they fail platform guidelines. A missing result does not necessarily mean the project was deleted; it may not be indexed for Browse, may be discoverable only by direct link or may have changed status. Use the creator’s page or community post to verify the current listing.

A reliable buying workflow outside Steam
1. Define the exact release
Write down the game title, edition, platform and any must-have DLC before opening stores. “The game” may refer to a base edition, a remaster, an early-access build, a soundtrack bundle or a version with different mod and multiplayer support.
2. Check availability in each relevant storefront
Search the exact title on Epic, GOG and itch.io. On itch.io, also search the creator name if a title search fails. If a store does not list the desired edition, do not substitute a similarly named project without checking the publisher or creator.

3. Compare the final regional checkout total
Use your own country and currency. Include taxes, conversion charges, DLC and the sale deadline. Compare like with like: a base game on one storefront is not cheaper than a deluxe bundle on another merely because its displayed number is lower.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
4. Read delivery and DRM notes
Identify the installer or archive, required launcher, external account, online activation, update method and offline instructions. If the page does not state a feature, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the most convenient outcome.
5. Confirm refund or trial conditions
For Epic, check the refundable or self-refundable label, the 14-day request window, the under-two-hour runtime condition and listed exclusions. For GOG or itch.io, find the current applicable policy rather than borrowing Epic’s terms. If you are using a trial, note exactly when access ends and what happens to your progress.
6. Save proof and recovery files
Keep the receipt, order email, account identifier and a copy of any standalone installer that the store permits you to download. Record the version and installation notes for itch.io projects that do not update through a conventional client.

Assuming every store has the same edition
Publishers can package DLC, bonus files, languages and builds differently. Open the included-content list for each edition and compare it to your requirements.
Applying Epic’s refund terms to another store
The 14-day and under-two-hour conditions belong to Epic’s stated policy for eligible products. They are not a general PC-game rule. Use the current policy for the storefront where you paid.
Reading “optional client” as “no requirements”
GOG’s optional-client description does not remove a game’s own launcher, account or online-service needs. Check the title page, especially for multiplayer games.
Treating every itch.io download as a finished commercial build
Open marketplaces include prototypes, game jams, early releases and highly polished projects. Look for version notes, screenshots, support information and update history before deciding what level of finish you need.

Confusing a free itch.io download with ownership
A free download without payment is not the same as a paid purchase that grants ownership and a download key. Decide which outcome you need before selecting the zero-price option.
Assuming an unlisted itch.io result is unavailable
Publishing and discovery indexing are separate. Try the exact title, creator page or a direct link, and remember that tags and Browse are a different route from title search.
Ignoring regional checkout details
Sale banners and converted prices can hide taxes, currency changes or a different edition. Confirm the final amount in your own region immediately before purchase.

Which alternative is best for different players?
You want a conventional storefront for a known commercial game
Start with Epic if the exact release is listed and its regional checkout price and refund eligibility suit you. Check GOG as well when its curated catalog carries the edition you want, particularly if an optional client and downloadable installers fit your routine.
You want older, unusual or independently curated releases
Check GOG’s title page and then compare the same game on itch.io if the creator sells there. Make no assumptions about DRM or offline operation from the storefront name; inspect the release details.
You want experimental, niche or creator-exclusive projects
Begin on itch.io. Use direct title searches for known games and tags or Browse for exploration. Read the project page closely because file formats, support and update practices vary more than they do in a tightly curated catalog.
You care most about keeping standalone files
Look for explicit installer or archive downloads and documented offline use. itch.io often provides creator-controlled files, and GOG describes an optional client, but the individual listing is decisive in both cases. Do not buy on the assumption that a particular storefront guarantees a specific DRM model for every title.
Final recommendation
Use storefronts as complementary catalogs rather than permanent replacements that must be ranked. Epic is the straightforward broad-store option when its listing and conditional refund terms fit. GOG is a curated alternative whose optional client can suit buyers who check title-specific delivery details. itch.io is the most creator-driven route, with distinctive games, flexible pricing and a discovery system built around direct searches and tags.
The safest purchase decision is always title-specific: compare the same edition in your region, read the current refund and download terms, verify DRM and client requirements, and test the game while your applicable remedy window remains open.
