CVE-2025-59489 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Unity Runtime embedded in games and other applications. It can potentially enable local code execution, information disclosure, or privilege escalation when platform-specific launch and library-loading conditions are met.
For players, the practical answer is not to uninstall every Unity game. Update Steam and the game, check the publisher’s security guidance, and temporarily remove a title only if it has been identified as vulnerable and no fixed build is available. Updating the Unity Editor fixes developers’ tools; it does not patch game binaries already shipped to players.

What happened with CVE-2025-59489?
Unity disclosed the vulnerability on October 2, 2025, after it was reported by RyotaK of GMO Flatt Security, who discovered it on June 4, 2025. Unity rates the issue High, with a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.4. It is classified as CWE-426, or untrusted search path.

The affected component is not merely the Unity Editor used to create games. It is the Unity Runtime bundled inside applications. A developer can update their Editor and still leave players exposed if the application is not rebuilt, patched, signed, and redistributed.

Unity said it had found no evidence of exploitation or impact on users or customers when its advisory was published. That is a time-qualified statement about the evidence available on October 2, 2025—not a guarantee that exploitation could never occur.
Valve responded by updating the Steam Client to block certain vulnerable Unity launch patterns. Microsoft separately advised users to uninstall identified affected games until patched versions became available.
What can the flaw do?
The vulnerability involves Unity’s handling of the -xrsdk-pre-init-library command-line argument and associated native-library loading behavior. Depending on the operating system and application configuration, an attacker may be able to influence which library a Unity application loads.
Technical research describes different attack paths on different platforms. On Android, a malicious application installed on the same device could abuse Android Intent handling to make a vulnerable Unity application load an attacker-supplied native library. On desktop systems, untrusted arguments, shortcuts, custom URI handlers, launchers, or library search paths may provide relevant input routes.
Successful code would run with the privileges of the affected game or application. The flaw does not automatically provide administrator or root access, and it is not a universal “download any Unity game and instantly get hacked” scenario.

The NVD record gives the vulnerability a local attack vector. Platform-specific launch mechanisms can make that local condition easier to reach in some circumstances, but this should not be described as an unauthenticated, internet-wide remote-code-execution flaw that affects every Unity game in the same way.
Which platforms are affected?
Unity lists these affected application platforms:

Platforms not listed by Unity had no findings suggesting exploitability. Microsoft’s warning specifically said that Xbox consoles, Xbox Cloud Gaming, iOS, and HoloLens were not affected. That platform-specific statement should not be expanded into a claim about every console or every Apple device without confirmation from the relevant publisher or platform provider.

Applications built with affected Unity Editor versions before the relevant fixed release should be treated as potentially vulnerable. Unity’s advisory covers branches beginning with Unity 2017.1, although not every old branch received a fix.

Unity extended fixes through the 2019.1 branch and newer. Its advisory lists no patched version for Unity 2018.4 and older branches, including 2017.x.
“Unity 2017.1 or later is affected” does not mean every game made with those versions remains exploitable today. It means an application containing a vulnerable Runtime should be treated as potentially affected until its publisher confirms a fixed build. Version, platform, launcher, packaging, and later updates all matter.

Why did Steam warn players?
Valve’s response had two separate parts:
- Client mitigation: Steam blocks certain custom URI or launch patterns associated with vulnerable Unity games.
- Publisher remediation: Valve advised developers to rebuild with a fixed Unity version or, where appropriate, replace the vulnerable
UnityPlayer.dllwith a patched Runtime.
A Steam Client block is a mitigation, not proof that the game’s shipped files have been repaired. It may stop one exploitation route while the underlying application remains vulnerable through another route. It also cannot protect applications obtained outside Steam or guarantee that every possible launch path is covered.

Why did Microsoft recommend uninstalling games?
Microsoft’s advice was deliberately conservative: remove identified affected games until a version addressing CVE-2025-59489 is available. This applies to confirmed or suspected vulnerable applications, not automatically to every Unity title installed on Windows.
The practical decision normally comes from the publisher’s support notice or a patched release. Reinstalling the same unpatched build does not solve the vulnerability, and a Windows update alone cannot repair a vulnerable Unity Runtime embedded inside a game.
Microsoft’s warning identified examples including Hearthstone, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, Fallout Shelter, DOOM (2019), Wasteland 3, and Forza Customs. This was not a complete inventory. A title’s status may differ by platform, build, and update, so these examples should not be treated as proof that every version remains vulnerable.

- Update Steam or the relevant game store client. This provides Valve’s launch mitigation where applicable, but is not a substitute for a patched game.
- Install the latest update for the game. Look for release notes or a publisher security notice that specifically confirms remediation of CVE-2025-59489 or identifies the fixed build.
- Do not rely on Unity branding alone. A game being made with Unity does not prove that it is vulnerable or that it remains unpatched.
- Temporarily uninstall confirmed vulnerable titles without a fix. Reinstall only after the publisher provides a patched version.
- Avoid unusual launch paths while status is unclear. Custom URI schemes, unofficial launchers, modified shortcuts, command-line arguments, mods, and third-party startup tools can create conditions different from a normal store launch.
- Keep the operating system and security software current. These measures reduce broader risk, but they do not replace an application-level patch.
- Investigate suspicious activity. If unusual behavior followed use of a potentially affected title, run a reputable security scan and review unexpected startup items, recently installed applications, and account activity.
Do not assume that antivirus software will detect every exploitation attempt, or that deleting and reinstalling a game fixes anything if the store supplies the same old build.

What developers and publishers must do
Unity’s normal remediation path is:
- Update the Unity Editor to the newest fixed release in the relevant branch.
- Rebuild the application.
- Test, sign, package, and redeploy the fixed application.
Updating the Editor alone does not alter binaries already distributed to players.
Where rebuilding from source is not feasible, Unity provides a Unity Binary Patch tool that can replace the vulnerable Runtime library for the target platform. This is a fallback, not an automatic substitute for a normal rebuild. Publishers must validate compatibility, signing, packaging, platform behavior, and distribution.
Publisher checklist
- Inventory every shipped Unity application, launcher, auxiliary executable, and supported branch.
- Record the Unity Editor version used for each release.
- Check whether each target platform appears in Unity’s affected-platform list.
- Rebuild with a fixed Editor or apply the binary patch where appropriate.
- Test standard launches, deep links, custom URI schemes, shortcuts, command-line arguments, mods, anti-cheat, external launchers, and platform packaging.
- Re-sign and distribute the application.
- Publish the fixed application version and affected platforms clearly.
- Retire, replace, or clearly mark unpatched legacy downloads.
What this warning does—and does not—mean
- It does mean vulnerable Unity Runtimes can potentially load unsafe libraries and enable serious impact under the right conditions.
- It does not mean merely having Unity installed is dangerous.
- It does not mean every Unity game is automatically exploitable, or that every version of a named game remains affected.
- It does not mean CVE-2025-59489 is a blanket internet-wide remote RCE.
- It does not mean Steam has patched every game. Steam’s block covers certain launch patterns.
- It does not mean a current Windows update repairs an embedded game Runtime.
If a game’s publisher has not confirmed a fixed build and the title is known to use an affected Unity branch, avoid running it—especially through custom launchers or modified shortcuts—until an updated application is available. For abandoned games, the safest choice may be to leave the title uninstalled.
