Steam Antitrust Lawsuit: Why Some Claims Returned to Court

The Steam antitrust litigation did not vanish in one dismissal. Consumer claims were sent to arbitration as the developer class proceeded in court, and most named consumers’ claims later returned to the court track.

Parts of the Steam antitrust litigation returned to the court process, but the case did not simply disappear and then restart in one ruling. Valve had sent the consumer plaintiffs to arbitration while a developer class continued in court. A court later lifted the stay on most of the named consumers’ claims. None of those procedural steps decided whether Valve violated antitrust law.

What happened to the Steam antitrust lawsuit?

Wolfire Games and individual consumers filed a proposed class action against Valve in April 2021 over Steam. Valve invoked the arbitration provision in its Steam Subscriber Agreement. In October 2021, the court ordered the consumer plaintiffs to arbitration, while the proposed developer class continued litigating in court.

Related cases were consolidated in 2022 under the caption In re Valve Antitrust Litigation. The litigation therefore followed different tracks rather than ending for every plaintiff at once.

Track What happened
Named consumer plaintiffs Ordered to arbitration in October 2021. The stay on their court claims, except Ryan Lally’s, was lifted on February 19, 2025.
Developer class Continued litigating in court and later became known as the Publisher Class.

Did the Steam lawsuit get dismissed?

Not as a single case-wide event established by the court materials described here. The consumer plaintiffs were directed to arbitration, while the developer class case continued in court. The court later lifted the stay on the named consumers’ claims other than Ryan Lally’s, returning those claims to the court process.

The available orders do not establish the exact dismissal-and-revival ruling suggested by the phrase “back from the dead.” The confirmed procedural development is the lifting of the stay on February 19, 2025—not a finding that Valve broke the law or a final judgment for either side.

Why did the consumer claims move back toward court?

The arbitration process and Valve’s agreement terms changed over time. An order in a related dispute recounts that an arbitrator dismissed four arbitrations in July 2024, allowing those claimants to pursue their claims in court. On September 26, 2024, Valve removed the arbitration provision and class-action waiver from the Steam Subscriber Agreement and added a retroactive forum-selection provision requiring disputes to be brought in King County, Washington.

In a related 2026 dispute, Judge Jamal N. Whitehead denied Valve’s motion for a preliminary injunction. That ruling concerned arbitration and the revised agreement. It was not a decision on the merits of the antitrust claims in the consolidated case.

What do the plaintiffs accuse Valve of doing?

In their June 2025 consolidated amended complaint, plaintiffs allege that Valve’s platform policies and pricing practices restrain competition in PC game distribution, downloadable content, and in-game purchases. They bring claims under Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act and Washington’s Consumer Protection Act.

Those are allegations in the plaintiffs’ complaint, not findings by the court. The procedural orders establish how claims were routed and handled; they do not establish that Valve violated antitrust law.
