To add custom art to a Steam profile, upload the image through Steam Community in a signed-in web browser, then select it under Edit Profile → Featured Showcase. Use Featured Artwork Showcase for one full-width image, Artwork Showcase for separate center and right pieces, and the Workshop showcase for five animated GIF parts. Steam profile showcases generally require level 10 or higher; you can earn showcases while leveling or obtain them through the Steam Points Shop.
What you need before you start
Steam’s profile editor does not normally upload showcase artwork from the desktop client. The documented workflow uses Steam Community in a browser. Open https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/edititem/767/3/ while already signed in. If you are not authenticated, Steam redirects you to its login page.

- Profile level: Steam profile showcases generally unlock at level 10 or above. Showcases can be earned through profile leveling or obtained in the Steam Points Shop. Availability can vary with Steam’s account and store rules.
- A suitable file: The current community guide reports a 5 MB artwork-upload limit. PNG and GIF files are accepted by the long-artwork instructions.
- The correct showcase slot: Decide whether your design is one full-width image, a two-piece split design, or a five-part animated Workshop layout before uploading.
- A desktop browser: The long-artwork method requires a browser developer console. Chrome and Firefox provide the documented shortcuts.
Steam’s labels can change. The currently documented path is Edit Profile → Featured Showcase; some users report seeing a Showcase Manager submenu, but that label is not established as universal. If your account shows a different submenu, look for the area where featured profile showcases are selected.
Plan the finished profile composition before opening the uploader. A full-width design, a split design, and a Workshop animation use different item counts and different selectors. Uploading the wrong type first can leave you with an item that is valid on Steam but unavailable in the slot you intended.

Choose the right showcase layout
The most common setup mistake is choosing the split Artwork Showcase for a single wide image. Select the showcase that matches the number and shape of your uploaded pieces.
| Design | Showcase to select | Artwork pieces | Approximate widths | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One full-width image | Featured Artwork Showcase | One item | About 630 px | The image occupies the central featured area. |
| Two-piece split design | Artwork Showcase | Two separate items | Main about 506 px; right about 100 px | The main and narrow right pieces are assigned to different slots. |
| Five-part animated design | Workshop | Five GIF files | Parts are arranged left to right | All five parts are assigned to the Workshop showcase. |
If you put only one image into regular Artwork Showcase, the right-side slot remains empty. A single full-width profile image belongs in Featured Artwork Showcase instead. These layouts are described in the current Steam profile instructions at https://steamprofile.io/en/faq and the community guide at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3331215953.
The width figures are layout references, not a promise that every account will render identical pixels. Use them when exporting, then inspect the saved profile at normal browser zoom. Keep text, faces, logos, and other focal details inside the visible area instead of placing them flush against a seam or edge.
Prepare the artwork files
Featured Artwork dimensions
For Featured Artwork, prepare an image approximately 630 pixels wide. The current guide uses 800 pixels high as its standard reference, while noting that height can vary. Match the visible composition to the available width: keep faces, logos, and other important details away from the edges where Steam’s profile framing may crop or resize them.
Export the single image as one item. Do not cut it into a center panel and a narrow panel unless you intend to use the regular Artwork Showcase. If the design includes text, check that the smallest letters remain readable at the profile’s displayed size; a source image that looks clear at full resolution can become difficult to read when reduced.
Regular Artwork dimensions
For the split Artwork Showcase, make two files and upload them separately:
- Main/center piece: approximately 506 px wide.
- Right piece: approximately 100 px wide.
- Reference height: 800 px is the guide’s standard example, but height can vary.
The two files should be designed as a matched pair. Do not upload one large canvas and expect Steam to infer the narrow right panel; the showcase requires a main item and a separate right-slot item.
Use the same reference height for both pieces when possible. Align borders, horizon lines, character poses, and other continuous elements at the shared boundary. Name the files clearly, such as “main” and “right,” so they are easy to identify in Steam’s selector. Upload and assign the main item first only for your own organization; the selector still requires you to choose each slot explicitly.
Long artwork
Steam’s upload form normally validates ordinary image dimensions. The long-artwork workflow changes the form’s hidden dimensions to 1000 × 1 during upload, allowing a tall or panoramic image to be stored and later displayed at full height. The file still needs to stay within the reported 5 MB limit. A PNG or GIF is suitable according to the current instructions.
The 1000 × 1 values are form values, not instructions to flatten or resize your artwork to one pixel high in an image editor. Keep your original artwork at its intended dimensions, select that file in the browser, and run the command after selection. The command removes the two field IDs after setting their values, which is why it must be entered before the upload is submitted.

Five-part animated Workshop art
A Workshop showcase is not one oversized GIF. It uses five separate GIF parts. Export the pieces in their intended left-to-right order and keep their visual edges aligned so the animation reads as one composition after Steam places the parts together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck all five files for consistent frame timing, canvas height, and looping behavior. A mismatch in timing can make a continuous animation appear to jump at panel boundaries. Upload each part as its own item; assigning fewer than five items leaves the Workshop layout incomplete.
Upload ordinary artwork in a browser
- Sign in to Steam in a desktop browser.
- Open https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/edititem/767/3/.
- Use the file picker to choose the artwork file.
- Enter an artwork title if you want one. Enable Hide Title when the title should not appear over the artwork.
- For a long-artwork upload, enable Long Artworks and Long Showcases. For an ordinary image that fits Steam’s normal form, leave that option off.
- Set the content type to Artwork.
- Set Visibility to Public. A private or friends-only item may not be selectable where you expect it in the profile editor.
- Click Upload and wait for Steam Community to finish processing the item.
The upload controls and labels are documented in the current community instructions at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3331215953 and https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2838398726.
Leave the browser tab open until Steam confirms completion. If you navigate away while processing, you may not know whether the item was created. Afterward, open the uploaded item from your profile or Community content and verify its type and visibility before trying to assign it.
Upload a long Artwork or Featured Artwork image
Use this procedure when you need Steam to accept a long image for Artwork Showcase or Featured Artwork Showcase. The command must be run after the file is selected and before the upload is completed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the upload page in Chrome or Firefox while signed in: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/edititem/767/3/.
- Select the image file.
- Enable Long Artworks and Long Showcases, choose Artwork, and set visibility to Public.
- Open the browser developer console. In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+J. In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+K.
- If Firefox refuses pasted code, type
allow pastingin the console and press Enter. This browser safeguard must be cleared before pasting the command. - Paste this current command exactly, then press Enter:
$J('#image_width').val(1000).attr('id',''),$J('#image_height').val(1).attr('id','');
- Enter the title, confirm that you are the author of the upload, and click Save and Continue.
- Finish the upload form and wait for Steam to return the completed artwork item.
The command makes Steam’s form treat the file as 1000 × 1 during submission. That is why the item may appear as a thin black line in Steam’s artwork selector or preview. The black line is an expected preview artifact, not proof that the upload failed; after you assign the item to a showcase, Steam displays the artwork at its full height. This behavior and the command are documented at https://steamprofile.io/en/faq and https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3331215953.
If you are unsure whether the process worked, finish assigning the item before deleting or re-uploading it. The selector thumbnail is the unreliable part of this workflow; the profile view is the meaningful test. If the profile still shows nothing, check the item type, visibility, account, and showcase choice in that order.
Upload a long Screenshot Showcase image
Screenshot Showcase uses a different file type. After selecting the file and enabling the long-artwork option, run this command in the browser console:
$J('#image_width').val(1000).attr('id',''),$J('#image_height').val(1).attr('id',''),$J('[name=file_type]').val(5);
Complete the remaining title, authorship, save, and upload controls in the same browser flow. Do not use this Screenshot command for an Artwork or Featured Artwork upload; the file_type value distinguishes the submission.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the Screenshot command only when the destination showcase is Screenshot Showcase. For ordinary profile art, keep the type set to Artwork and use the Artwork command, if a long upload is needed. Mixing the commands can produce an item that uploads successfully but does not appear in the intended selector.

Assign an uploaded item to your profile
- Open your Steam profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Featured Showcase (or the equivalent showcase-management submenu shown on your account).
- Choose the showcase type that matches your files.
- For Featured Artwork Showcase, select the single full-width artwork item.
- For Artwork Showcase, select the approximately 506 px item for the main slot and the approximately 100 px item for the right slot.
- For Workshop, select all five GIF items in left-to-right order.
- Save the profile and view it as a visitor would to check alignment, readability, and animation.
The assignment path and slot behavior are described in https://steamprofile.io/en/faq and https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3331215953.
Saving the profile is separate from uploading the item. A successful upload does not automatically place art on your page. Return to the profile editor, select the correct showcase, choose the item or items, and save again. Then inspect the public-facing profile rather than relying only on the editor’s small preview.
Create a five-part animated Workshop showcase
- Prepare five GIF files, one for each visible part of the finished composition.
- Open the Steam Community upload page in a signed-in browser.
- Select the first file and open the developer console.
- Run the Workshop upload-type command:
$J('[name=consumer_app_id]').val(480);$J('[name=file_type]').val(0);$J('[name=visibility]').val(0);
- Complete the title and upload controls, then repeat the upload for each of the five GIF parts.
- If Steam displays the Workshop Legal Agreement, open it and accept it, then return to the upload page and continue.
- Go to Edit Profile → Featured Showcase, choose Workshop, and assign the five uploaded items from left to right.
The command, five-file requirement, and legal-agreement exception are documented at https://steamprofile.io/en/faq.
Keep a written left-to-right order while uploading. Steam’s item list can contain several similarly named files, and assigning them out of sequence is one of the easiest ways to break an otherwise correct animation. If the legal agreement appears, accepting it is a prerequisite for proceeding; it is not an indication that the GIF files themselves are invalid.
Troubleshooting and recovery
The console command does nothing
- Confirm that the upload page is open in a browser, not only in the Steam desktop client.
- Check that you selected a file before running the command.
- In Firefox, enter
allow pastingand press Enter before pasting JavaScript. - Use the current
$J(...)syntax shown above. An older guide usesdocument.getElementsByName("image_width")[0].value=1000;document.getElementsByName("image_height")[0].value=1;, but that older form should not be treated as the only current syntax.
The older syntax is preserved in a community post at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2409557180; the currently maintained instructions use the $J(...) commands at https://steamprofile.io/en/faq.
Run the command only once after the file is selected. If you paste it before the upload form has loaded, the selectors may not exist. If the console reports an error, reload the upload page, sign in again if necessary, select the file, and repeat the sequence from the beginning.
The preview is a thin black line
For a long upload made with the 1000 × 1 command, a thin black line is expected. Finish the upload, assign the item to the appropriate showcase, and check the profile view rather than judging the item by the selector thumbnail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The artwork is missing from the selector
- Verify that the upload completed and that you are viewing the same Steam account.
- Confirm that the item was uploaded as Artwork, not Screenshot or Workshop, unless you intentionally need one of those types.
- For a regular split layout, upload both pieces and assign each to its matching slot.
- For a single wide image, switch to Featured Artwork Showcase instead of leaving the right slot empty in Artwork Showcase.
- Check visibility. The documented upload flow sets it to Public.
Also verify that the showcase is available on the account. Profile showcases generally require level 10 or higher, although showcases may be earned while leveling or obtained through the Steam Points Shop. A missing selector can therefore be an account-unlock issue rather than a file problem.
The upload page redirects to login
The page requires an active Steam login. Sign in in the same browser, then reopen https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/edititem/767/3/. A login in the desktop client alone does not guarantee that the browser session is authenticated.
Workshop uploads stop at a legal notice
Open and accept Steam’s Workshop Legal Agreement, return to the upload page, and repeat the Workshop upload. This is an account-level prerequisite Steam may show before accepting Workshop items.

The two-piece design does not line up
Recheck the exported widths and order. The center file should be about 506 px wide and the right file about 100 px wide. Keep the same reference height and align the artwork’s horizon lines, borders, and animation timing before uploading again.

Check the reported 5 MB artwork limit first. Reduce export size or simplify animation while preserving the intended composition. A file that exceeds the limit, is uploaded under the wrong type, or is submitted through the desktop client can fail for reasons unrelated to the profile layout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and account safety
Upload artwork that you created or have permission to use. Current community guidance says an artwork cannot simply be featured directly from another user’s favorites; download it through normal means and upload it to your own account. Reusing someone else’s work without permission can lead to copyright complaints or a DMCA process. Public visibility also means other Steam users can view the item, so remove private information and check every frame of an animated GIF before publishing.
Titles and visible artwork can expose usernames, messages, or other identifying details. Review the entire canvas, including corners that may be easy to overlook, and inspect animated frames rather than checking only the first frame. The Public setting is needed for the documented selection flow, so treat every uploaded item as content other users may see.

Quick decision checklist
- One image, full width: Featured Artwork Showcase, about 630 px wide.
- Main plus narrow side panel: Artwork Showcase, separate files about 506 px and 100 px wide.
- Five animated pieces: Workshop showcase, five GIF uploads in left-to-right order.
- Very tall or panoramic file: enable Long Artworks and Long Showcases, run the exact 1000 × 1 command, and expect a thin-line preview.
- Upload fails in the client: move the procedure to Steam Community in a signed-in browser.
- Firefox blocks pasted JavaScript: enter
allow pastingfirst. - Artwork is not selectable: confirm type, visibility, account, and the showcase slot that matches the file.
- Showcase is unavailable: check whether the profile has reached level 10 or whether the showcase was obtained through the Points Shop.
- Workshop upload pauses: accept the Workshop Legal Agreement, then return to the uploader.
- Selector thumbnail looks broken: assign the item and judge the result on the saved profile, because long uploads can appear as a thin black line.
Frequently asked questions
What Steam level is required for profile showcases?
Steam profile showcases generally require level 10 or higher. You can earn showcases by leveling or obtain them through the Steam Points Shop, subject to Steam’s account and store rules.
Can I upload showcase art in the Steam desktop client?
The documented procedure is performed through Steam Community in a web browser. Use a signed-in browser for the upload page, especially when a developer-console command is required.
Which showcase is right for one full-width image?
Use Featured Artwork Showcase. It is designed for one central item of about 630 pixels wide. Regular Artwork Showcase expects a main item and a separate narrow right-side item.
Why is my long artwork only a black line?
The 1000 × 1 upload method deliberately makes Steam treat the file as one pixel high during submission. A thin black selector or preview line is expected; the artwork should display at full height after assignment to the showcase.
Can I feature an item directly from another user’s favorites?
No. The current community instructions say to download the artwork normally and upload it to your own account. Use only work you created or have permission to use, because unauthorized reuse can lead to copyright or DMCA complaints.

How many files does a Workshop showcase need?
Five separate GIF files are required. Upload the parts individually and assign all five from left to right under the Workshop showcase.
What should I do if Firefox blocks pasted code?
Type allow pasting in the Firefox developer console and press Enter, then paste the current command. Make sure the upload page is open and the file has already been selected.
Why can’t I select an artwork I just uploaded?
Confirm that the upload finished, that you are using the same account, and that the item type is Artwork. Check that visibility is Public and that you selected the matching showcase: Featured Artwork for one wide image, Artwork Showcase for two slots, or Workshop for five GIF parts.

The Bottom Line
Use a signed-in Steam Community browser session, choose the showcase that matches your layout, and keep the documented dimensions and file types in mind. Featured Artwork is for one approximately 630 px-wide image; regular Artwork Showcase uses separate approximately 506 px and 100 px pieces; Workshop uses five GIFs.
