Steam Controller 2: The 2024 Leak That Became Valve’s 2026 Steam Controller

Update: The controller shown in a widely reported November 2024 leak eventually became real. Valve officially announced its new Steam Controller in November 2025 and released it on May 4, 2026, for $99 in the United States. “Steam Controller 2” was never Valve’s official name.

The leaked image showed a large wireless controller combining two conventional thumbsticks, familiar ABXY and D-pad controls, and the dual touchpads that defined Valve’s original 2015 Steam Controller. The final product kept that unusual combination, while adding modern hardware such as TMR sticks, rear grip buttons, gyro controls, and a dedicated wireless-and-charging Puck.

What leaked in November 2024?

On November 27, 2024, coverage attributed an image of Valve’s next controller to hardware dataminer Bradley Lynch. The render was reportedly found in SteamVR driver updates and was associated with the reported codename “Ibex.” It was not a Valve press photograph or a verified retail product image.

The unofficial nickname “Steam Duke” referred to the controller’s unusually large apparent proportions. The most striking detail, however, was its input layout: two inward-angled touchpads sat alongside two analog sticks, with a conventional D-pad and ABXY buttons completing the front face.

That made the design look less like a simple replacement for the 2015 Steam Controller and more like a hybrid of the Steam Deck and Valve’s earlier living-room gamepad. Notebookcheck’s original leak report described the large shell and the unusual arrangement in detail.

How it differed from the original Steam Controller

Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller replaced both traditional thumbsticks with clickable trackpads. Its purpose was to make mouse-oriented PC games—including strategy, simulation, and 4X titles—more playable from a sofa. Valve later said the original sold 1.3 million units, but discontinued it after its clearance period.

The leaked successor appeared to address the main obstacle facing the first model: players who wanted the flexibility of trackpads but still expected the familiar muscle memory of analog sticks. It retained two touchpads while adding:

  • Two conventional analog sticks.
  • A standard D-pad.
  • ABXY face buttons.
  • A Steam Deck-like overall control arrangement.
  • A larger shell intended to accommodate the expanded controls.

The result was designed to be more approachable than the original without abandoning Valve’s PC-specific ideas. Touchpads and gyro controls can handle mouse-style aiming, cursor movement, radial menus, and fine adjustments; sticks remain available for games designed around a conventional gamepad.

Why the dual touchpads matter

The touchpads are the reason this controller exists. They are not simply a second way to move a character. Through Steam Input, a pad can act as a mouse, trackball, virtual joystick, radial-menu selector, button cluster, or camera-control surface. A player can also combine a touchpad with gyro aiming for more precise movement than a stick alone.

That flexibility is especially useful for playing PC games from a television. Strategy and management games, older mouse-first releases, shooters that benefit from gyro aiming, and games with large numbers of commands can all gain something from configurable touch controls.

The trade-off is a learning curve. A conventional Xbox-style controller is immediately familiar, while touchpads require experimentation with sensitivity, activation modes, haptics, and custom layouts. Their value also depends on whether the player is willing to configure profiles rather than relying only on default mappings.

Valve later confirmed the product

Valve officially announced a new hardware lineup in November 2025: the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame. The announcement initially gave a 2026 release window. Valve’s engineers described the controller as a standalone expression of the Steam Deck’s input philosophy, combining traditional controls with trackpads, gyro, and Steam Input customization.

Shipping specifications

These are specifications reported for the released controller, not facts established by the 2024 render:

Feature Shipping detail
Trackpads Two 34.5 mm square haptic trackpads
Thumbsticks Two full-size magnetic TMR sticks with capacitive touch
Rear controls Four assignable grip buttons
Motion Six-axis IMU and gyro controls
Grip sensing Two capacitive sensing areas on the rear handles
Wireless Steam Controller Puck and Bluetooth
Wired connection USB-C
Battery 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery
Claimed battery life More than 35 hours under specified tracking conditions
Weight 292 grams
Dimensions 111 × 159 × 57 mm

The battery figure is a published specification, not an independent test result. Actual endurance can vary with wireless mode, haptics, gyro use, and other settings. Similarly, TMR sticks may reduce the drift risk associated with conventional potentiometers, but they should not be described as guaranteed drift-proof.

What the Steam Controller Puck does

The Puck is both a dedicated 2.4 GHz wireless receiver and a magnetic charging interface. It is therefore more than a decorative dock: using Bluetooth alone may not provide the same connection characteristics or multi-controller behavior as the dedicated receiver.

Valve has described a target of approximately 8 ms of wireless latency for the Puck connection. That is Valve’s stated figure, not an independently verified benchmark. One Puck can support up to four Steam Controllers, with Valve saying performance should not degrade as additional controllers are connected within that limit.

The controller can also connect over Bluetooth or USB-C. For a living-room setup, however, the Puck is the intended wireless path and charging solution.

Compatibility and Steam Input limitations

The controller is primarily designed for the Steam ecosystem. Its full feature set depends heavily on Steam and Steam Input, including per-game profiles, community layouts, desktop mappings, gyro behavior, and touchpad configuration.

  • Steam on Windows and macOS: Full functionality is available through Steam Input.
  • Outside Steam on Windows and macOS: Valve engineers have described basic USB mouse-and-keyboard composite behavior rather than universal native gamepad support.
  • Linux: A built-in kernel driver provides gamepad functionality without Steam running.
  • Non-Steam games: Adding a game to Steam may be necessary for Steam Input profiles to apply.
  • Consoles: It should not be treated as a confirmed Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch controller without explicit platform support.

This makes it a different purchase from a standard Xbox controller. The Valve model offers far more PC-specific input possibilities, but those benefits are tied to the software environment that supports them.

How accurate was the leak?

Reported leak detail What happened
Dual built-in touchpads Confirmed. They remain a defining feature of the released controller.
Two analog sticks Confirmed.
Steam Deck-like layout Broadly confirmed. The final controller combines conventional controls with Deck-style input ideas.
Large redesigned body Broadly confirmed. The final controller is larger than many conventional gamepads.
“Ibex” Reported codename only. It is not the retail name.
“Steam Controller 2” Not official. This was media and community shorthand.
Exact price and launch date Not established by the original render. The final U.S. price was $99 and the launch date was May 4, 2026.
Steam Controller Puck Confirmed in the final product.

The leak was therefore substantially accurate about the product’s identity and physical concept. It did not prove final firmware, battery life, dimensions, materials, latency, durability, or regional pricing.

Who should buy it?

The released Steam Controller makes the most sense for Steam Deck owners, PC gamers who play from a TV, existing Steam Controller users who want conventional sticks, and players who enjoy gyro aiming or extensive Steam Input customization. It is also a natural companion for Valve’s living-room hardware.

It is a weaker choice for someone who wants a cheap, plug-and-play controller, plays only games with ordinary gamepad support, dislikes large controllers, or needs broad console compatibility. Players who do not want to configure profiles may get more immediate value from a conventional controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, check whether your games run through Steam, whether you want to use the Puck rather than Bluetooth, and whether the controller’s size suits your hands. Valve has said it spent roughly a year testing ergonomics and different trackpad orientations, but that does not guarantee comfort for every player.
