Steam Deck Black Friday 2023: OLED Prices, LCD Discounts, and the Best Deal

The 2023 Steam Deck deal story was OLED launch pricing, cheaper outgoing LCD models, and accessory discounts—not an established Black Friday OLED markdown.

There was no established Black Friday markdown on the new Steam Deck OLED in 2023. Valve launched the OLED on November 16 at US prices of $549 for 512GB and $649 for 1TB. The LCD models became cheaper as Valve changed its lineup and cleared outgoing stock; meanwhile, the Steam Autumn Sale focused on games, not a dedicated Deck hardware promotion.

Steam Deck prices in November 2023

These are US-dollar price signals reported around the OLED launch, not a complete record of every temporary checkout price. In particular, the available evidence does not establish one Black Friday-day price for every LCD configuration.

Model November 2023 price or status What it meant
Steam Deck LCD 64GB Being phased out It was not the new regular entry-level model after the lineup change.
Steam Deck LCD 256GB $399 The repositioned regular LCD entry point.
Steam Deck LCD 512GB $449, while supplies lasted An outgoing LCD configuration, not an OLED-equivalent model. Contemporaneous Steam Community reporting.
Steam Deck OLED 512GB $549 New OLED model launch price.
Steam Deck OLED 1TB $649 New premium OLED model launch price.

Valve’s OLED launch and the associated LCD lineup changes were reported on November 9, 2023; the OLED models became available November 16. The $399 LCD price followed a lineup change, so it should not be treated as a temporary discount on an otherwise identical 256GB model at its earlier price. Ars Technica’s launch coverage gives the OLED and LCD pricing context.

Was there a Steam Deck Black Friday hardware sale?

“Black Friday sale” describes the timing buyers were searching for, but it was not clearly the name of a separate Valve OLED promotion. The evidence supports two distinct hardware developments: the OLED launched at its announced prices, and Valve reduced or retired LCD configurations as it reorganized the lineup. It does not establish that Valve marked down the OLED for Black Friday.

The Steam Autumn Sale ran from November 21 to November 28, 2023, beginning and ending at 10 a.m. Pacific. Valve’s announcement emphasized game discounts and Steam Awards nominations, rather than a Steam Deck hardware sale. Valve’s Autumn Sale announcement.

That distinction matters: the OLED’s $549 and $649 prices were launch prices, while lower LCD pricing reflected the older hardware and outgoing configurations. A claim of a specific Black Friday discount percentage needs a dated store listing or other direct price record; the November pricing signals above do not prove one for every model.

OLED or LCD: which was the better buy?

The OLED was a meaningful handheld-quality upgrade, not a new performance generation. Valve’s OLED model has a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, compared with the LCD model’s 7-inch, 60Hz display. It also has a larger 50Wh battery versus the original LCD model’s 40Wh, improved Wi-Fi hardware, and updated internal components. The LCD and OLED deliver the same general SteamOS and Steam library experience, and the OLED does not bring a dramatic frame-rate leap. Valve’s LCD/OLED comparison and launch coverage describe the changes.

  • Choose the LCD if the lowest purchase price mattered most, you played mainly docked or indoors, or screen contrast and battery life were secondary. A cheaper LCD could leave more budget for games, storage, or a dock.
  • Choose the OLED if you played handheld for long sessions, valued HDR and smoother screen motion, wanted longer battery life, or preferred the 1TB built-in storage option.

The $449 LCD 512GB clearance model was cheaper than the $549 OLED 512GB, but it was an older display platform with a smaller battery and different connectivity hardware. The price gap bought a real quality-of-life upgrade; it did not buy a major performance-class change.

Could a refurbished LCD Deck be a better deal?

Yes, depending on its price and condition. Valve had introduced certified-refurbished Steam Decks before Black Friday, in August 2023. Contemporaneous reporting said they were $80–$130 below comparable new models and carried the same one-year warranty as new units. That was an existing sales channel, not evidence of a Black Friday-only offer. Ars Technica’s report on Valve’s refurbished Decks.

Compare the exact storage capacity and condition, not just the word “refurbished.” A certified refurbished unit with a warranty may be preferable to an unknown used-market listing; a used unit may cost less, but seller protections and condition vary. Availability and prices were not uniform, so the reported savings should not be read as a guaranteed Black Friday price.

What was actually worth watching on Black Friday?

For many owners, the more conventional Black Friday discounts were on accessories rather than the OLED itself. Contemporaneous Steam-linked coverage highlighted microSD cards and JSAUX ModCase products; one cited ModCase listing was $26, down from $30. That was an accessory deal, not a Deck hardware discount. Steam-linked Black Friday accessory coverage.

  • MicroSD card: the simplest way to add game storage. Check the speed class, seller reputation, authenticity, and return policy; an unusually cheap high-capacity card from an unknown seller is a risk.
  • Internal SSD: a more involved storage upgrade that requires opening the Deck. It can suit an owner who wants more internal storage, but is a poor choice if you do not want to handle hardware or restore the operating system.
  • Case or grip: useful for protection or comfort, but check whether it fits your dock and does not obstruct buttons or ventilation.
  • Dock, hub, charger, or power bank: check the specific product’s USB-C charging and display-output support rather than assuming every inexpensive hub or charger will behave alike. Large power banks can also be awkward to carry.

For storage, a microSD card is the lower-effort option; an SSD involves more work, while paying for higher built-in capacity avoids an immediate expansion purchase. The right choice depends on your game library and willingness to open the device, not just the headline capacity.

Should an LCD owner have upgraded to OLED?

Not automatically. An existing LCD Deck remained a sensible choice for owners satisfied with its performance, especially if they played mostly docked or expected little resale value from a recent purchase. The OLED made more sense for someone who cared about its display and battery improvements enough to pay the difference. If the main frustration was storage, a microSD card or an SSD upgrade could address that more cheaply than replacing a working Deck.
