Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most 1440p players, the Radeon RX 7800 XT is the best GPU for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII) in a 2024-focused build. It combines strong game-specific raster performance with 16 GB of VRAM. Choose the GeForce RTX 4070 Super instead when DLSS, Frame Generation, Reflex, lower power use, or creator features matter more than native MWIII performance. For 4K, step up to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX or GeForce RTX 4080 Super, while 1080p competitive players can save money with an RX 7600, RTX 4060, or suitable used card.
Quick recommendations
| Use case | Recommended GPU | VRAM | Why it fits MWIII | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p competitive/value | Radeon RX 7600, RX 7600 XT, GeForce RTX 4060, or used RTX 3060 12 GB | 8–16 GB | Enough for reduced settings; the game is scalable | At very high refresh rates, the CPU may limit FPS |
| 1440p general use | Radeon RX 7800 XT | 16 GB | Excellent MWIII raster performance and useful headroom | Check its price against newer cards and discounted stock |
| 1440p with NVIDIA features | GeForce RTX 4070 Super | 12 GB | DLSS, Frame Generation, Reflex, and efficient power use | Can lose to similarly priced Radeon cards in native MWIII rendering |
| 1440p 240 Hz | Radeon RX 7900 GRE/7900 XT or RTX 4070 Ti Super | 16 GB on Radeon options; 16 GB on Ti Super | More rendering headroom for high-refresh play | CPU, memory, map, and settings determine sustained FPS |
| 4K high quality | Radeon RX 7900 XTX or GeForce RTX 4080 Super | 24 GB or 16 GB | Strong performance at high resolution; AMD tested especially well in MWIII | Confirm PSU capacity, case clearance, and current pricing |
| Maximum FPS | GeForce RTX 4090 or the highest current equivalent | 24 GB or more | Provides the most GPU headroom, especially at 4K | A faster GPU adds little at 1080p if the CPU is already limiting |
These are decision points, not a universal ranking. MWIII can favor Radeon cards more strongly than the average PC game, so generic GPU charts are an unreliable shortcut.
What Activision’s requirements actually mean
Activision lists the minimum multiplayer tier as a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600 XT, or Intel Arc A770 with 8 GB of video memory. Its “competitive / 4K Ultra” tier lists an RTX 3080, RTX 4070, or RX 6800 XT with 10 GB of VRAM. That second tier is described as suitable for high FPS on a high-refresh monitor and high-FPS 4K Ultra, but it does not promise a particular average FPS, 1% low, test scene, or resolution-scaling mode. Treat it as a baseline, not a benchmark result.
The requirements were published for launch and can change. They also call for 64-bit Windows 10 (latest update) or Windows 11, DirectX 12, 16 GB of RAM for the competitive/4K Ultra tier, an SSD, broadband internet, and 149 GB of launch storage. An optional high-resolution asset cache could use up to 64 GB, and mandatory updates may require additional space. Laptop GPUs with similar names are not automatically equivalent to desktop models.

Choose by resolution, refresh rate, and settings
1080p at 144 or 165 Hz
An RX 7600, RTX 4060, or used RTX 3060 12 GB is a sensible starting point. Competitive settings lower the GPU workload, so spending on a flagship card often produces little benefit if your processor cannot deliver the required frame rate. Prefer stable frame times and a balanced CPU over chasing a larger GPU.
1440p at 144 or 165 Hz
The RX 7800 XT is the clearest 2024 recommendation when its price is competitive. AMD positions it as a 1440p card with 16 GB of GDDR6, and independent MWIII testing found it reached a roughly 70-FPS target in the tested campaign sequence. The RTX 4070 Super is the alternative for buyers who value DLSS, Reflex, Frame Generation, efficiency, or NVIDIA software.

1440p at 240 Hz
Consider an RX 7900 GRE, RX 7900 XT, RTX 4070 Ti Super, or faster equivalent for additional GPU headroom. Do not interpret that purchase as a 240-FPS guarantee: the processor, RAM latency, map, render settings, and 1% lows are often decisive at this refresh rate.
4K at 60–144 Hz
Look at the RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 XTX, RTX 4080 Super, or RTX 4090. In ComputerBase’s MWIII test, the RX 7900 XTX was 34% faster than the RTX 4080 in Ultra HD under that test’s conditions. That is valuable game-specific evidence, not a claim that Radeon is faster in every title or every MWIII mode.
Ultrawide displays
3440×1440 is substantially heavier than standard 2560×1440, while 5120×1440 approaches a 4K-class workload. Move up one performance tier when you want the same refresh rate and image quality as a conventional monitor.

What MWIII testing shows
ComputerBase tested the PC version in DirectX 12 and considered approximately 70 FPS a more useful campaign target than simply treating 60 FPS as ideal. In its specific scene, settings, drivers, and game build, the RX 6800 XT, RX 7800 XT, RTX 3090 Ti, and RTX 4070 reached that level. Radeon cards were unusually competitive, and the RX 7900 XTX led the RTX 4080 in Ultra HD.
Campaign scenes, multiplayer maps, Warzone, and competitive settings are not interchangeable workloads. Use the result to understand the game’s tendency, not to promise identical FPS on your PC.

AMD versus NVIDIA for MWIII
Why choose Radeon
- Strong native/rasterized performance in the cited MWIII testing.
- 16 GB is common on RX 7800 XT and higher 2024 Radeon models, helping with high-resolution textures and longevity.
- More VRAM per dollar may be available when street pricing favors AMD.
Why choose GeForce
- MWIII supports DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS 3 Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex.
- Lower power draw and a mature ecosystem can simplify compact builds, streaming, or creator workloads.
- Reflex targets latency reduction, while DLSS reconstructs the image and Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames; they solve different problems.
Blizzard’s PC announcement confirms MWIII’s DLSS, Frame Generation, and Reflex support. Frame Generation can raise the displayed FPS, but it does not replace a strong base frame rate for responsive competitive play.
How much VRAM do you need?
- 8 GB: workable for budget 1080p or competitive settings, but less attractive for a new long-term 1440p build.
- 12 GB: a comfortable baseline for most 1440p purchases.
- 16 GB or more: preferable for high textures, 1440p longevity, and 4K flexibility.
Activision’s official figures are 8 GB for minimum multiplayer and 10 GB for its competitive/4K Ultra tier. VRAM capacity does not determine performance by itself; bandwidth, architecture, settings, and resolution matter too.

New budget cards
The RX 7600, RX 7600 XT, and RTX 4060 suit 1080p systems. A new 8 GB card can be sensible when the budget is tight and settings are competitive, but 12–16 GB is a safer target if you expect to keep the card for several years at 1440p.

Used alternatives
A used RTX 3060 12 GB, RX 6800 XT, or RTX 3080 can be compelling for MWIII. Before buying, verify warranty and return coverage, ask about mining or heavy-use history, inspect temperatures and fan noise, and check the card’s power connectors, PSU requirement, physical dimensions, and suitability for your other games.
Settings that change GPU requirements
Resolution has the largest effect on GPU load. Texture quality and high-resolution asset options primarily affect VRAM; shadows, volumetrics, reflections, and anti-aliasing affect rendering cost. Native resolution gives the clearest comparison, while DLSS Quality, DLSS Balanced, FSR Quality, and dynamic resolution produce different image-quality and performance results.
- Use a frame cap just below your monitor’s refresh rate for steadier frame times when appropriate.
- Evaluate competitive presets separately from campaign-quality presets.
- Enable Reflex (or the appropriate latency-reduction option) when latency is a priority.
- Judge Frame Generation using base-rendered FPS and input response, not the generated number alone.
Menu labels and options can change with game updates, so compare benchmarks only when the exact preset, upscaler mode, resolution, ray-tracing state, driver, and game build are documented.
CPU, power, and system balance
At 1080p with reduced settings, MWIII can become CPU-limited. A faster GPU will not fix a weak processor, insufficient memory bandwidth, background-task interruptions, or poor cooling. For 240-Hz play, prioritize a modern high-performance CPU, dual-channel RAM, current BIOS and chipset drivers, and consistent frametimes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore ordering a card, check the manufacturer’s recommended PSU wattage, connector type, case length and thickness, airflow, and available PCIe slot. An RX 7900 XTX, RTX 4080 Super, or RTX 4090 can require substantially more power and space than a midrange card. PCIe generation compatibility is generally not a reason to reject an otherwise suitable upgrade, but the complete platform still needs adequate power and cooling.
2024 verdict by buyer priority
- Best overall 1440p: RX 7800 XT, provided its price is competitive.
- Best NVIDIA 1440p: RTX 4070 Super for DLSS, Reflex, Frame Generation, efficiency, and software features.
- Best 4K raster choice: RX 7900 XTX when MWIII native performance and VRAM matter most.
- Best 4K NVIDIA choice: RTX 4080 Super when DLSS, Reflex, power efficiency, or the NVIDIA ecosystem justify its price.
- Best budget route: RX 7600, RTX 4060, or a carefully inspected used RTX 3060 12 GB for 1080p.
Buy according to your monitor and settings first, then verify that your CPU, PSU, case, and cooling can support the target. The “best GPU” for 1080p competitive play is not the same product as the best GPU for native 4K Ultra.
