Steam Deck Compatibility Checks: What to Verify Before Buying a Game

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the game’s live Steam store listing before you buy. Find its Steam Deck compatibility rating, open the explanation behind the badge, then separately review controller support, accessibility features, and any online or anti-cheat requirements that affect how you play. The rating is Valve’s current compatibility snapshot—not a permanent promise of a specific frame rate, battery life, launcher behavior, or performance on every Deck configuration.

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows many games built for Windows to run on SteamOS, so ordinary Windows system requirements do not answer the Deck question by themselves. What matters is how the complete game behaves in the SteamOS and Proton environment at the time you purchase it.

Start with the live Steam store page

Open the game’s current store page in the Steam client or at Steam Store. Locate the Steam Deck compatibility area and record the category shown there. Valve also lets you filter your library and store searches by Deck compatibility; its search interface is available at Steam store search and filters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do this immediately before buying rather than relying on an old screenshot, review, or forum post. A game can receive a patch, change launchers, alter its anti-cheat configuration, or behave differently after a Proton or SteamOS update. The listing you see now is the relevant starting point.

What the badge tells you

Valve’s compatibility program uses labels such as Verified and Playable to communicate the expected level of usability on Deck. Verified indicates that Valve’s checks found the experience meets its criteria for that category. Playable means the game can work but may require a setting change, an on-screen keyboard, a touchpad, a magnifier, or another adjustment. The category is a summary; the accompanying notes explain the actual compromise.

Think of the badge as a quick triage tool. It helps you decide whether to investigate further, but it does not answer every question a buyer may have. Two games with the same category can demand very different compromises: one might need a one-time touch-screen adjustment, while another might require frequent mouse-pointer navigation. The detail text is what lets you distinguish those cases.

Why the category is not a guarantee

Valve describes ratings as snapshots that can change as developers update games and as compatibility support improves. In its March 4, 2022 update, Valve wrote: “Whenever we talk about compatibility rating numbers, we emphasize that this is just a snapshot of a single moment, and that ratings change over time.” Treat that statement as a warning against assuming permanence, not as a reason to ignore the rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timing matters in both directions. A title can improve after a game patch or Proton fix, or it can acquire a new launcher or input problem after an update. If you saved a game to a wish list months ago, reopen its listing rather than assuming the old category and notes still apply.

Open the rating details, not just the icon

The most useful information is often hidden behind the category. Read every qualification shown with the rating and translate it into your own play habits.

Controller prompts and navigation

Valve’s program considers whether the game presents usable controller prompts and whether menus can be navigated with the controls available on Deck. Valve gave inconsistent controller prompts as an example of a reason a game might be marked Playable rather than Verified. If a title repeatedly tells you to press keyboard keys, requires a mouse pointer for menus, or shows unfamiliar button symbols, decide whether that interruption is acceptable before purchasing.

Separate the question of whether a control exists from whether it is comfortable. A trackpad gesture or touchscreen tap may technically complete a task, yet still be inconvenient if the task appears often. Read the note for frequency and context: first-run setup, inventory management, chat, character creation, and configuration screens can each affect the feel of handheld play differently.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text entry and launchers

Some games open a separate launcher, require account credentials, display a first-run configuration window, or ask you to type codes. These tasks may be manageable with the touchscreen or an on-screen keyboard but can be awkward in handheld mode. A Playable note can therefore matter more to a player who starts games away from a desk than to someone who keeps a keyboard and mouse nearby.

Ask whether the extra step is occasional or part of every session. A one-time account sign-in may be a minor inconvenience; a launcher that appears whenever you start the game is a recurring part of the experience. Also consider where you normally play. Docked use with a keyboard and mouse may make a qualification easy to live with, while a device used exclusively in handheld mode makes touch and trackpad dependence more consequential.

Read the qualification literally

Do not convert a note such as “requires manual configuration” into a general claim that the game is broken, and do not dismiss it as harmless. Identify the exact action required, how often you must perform it, and whether you are willing to use touch, trackpads, or external input. The right choice depends on your tolerance for setup.

Make a short personal decision rule before checkout. For example, you might accept a single setup change but reject a game that needs a pointer for routine menus. This keeps the store note tied to your actual habits instead of to an abstract idea of what counts as playable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check controller support as a separate decision

Steam exposes controller support independently from Deck compatibility. A favorable Deck badge does not tell you that every control is available through a standard gamepad layout.

Store signal Question to answer Why it matters
Steam Deck compatibility Does Valve classify the overall experience as Verified, Playable, or another category? Summarizes Valve’s testing of usability in the Deck environment.
Controller support Can the game be played with the controls you intend to use? Reveals whether keyboard, mouse, touch, trackpads, or custom bindings may be needed.
Accessibility attributes Are the subtitle, text, color, input, or other features you need listed? Deck compatibility does not replace checking personal accessibility requirements.

Look for the controller information on the store page and compare it with your planned setup. If you want purely handheld play, “works with a controller” is a more useful threshold than “can be made to run.” If you are comfortable mapping trackpads or connecting external peripherals, a broader range of Playable notes may be acceptable.

Consider the complete control path, not only gameplay. Menus, map screens, inventory, chat, launchers, and text fields can use different input methods from the main game. A title that feels excellent once a level starts may still be a poor purchase if ordinary navigation repeatedly sends you to a virtual keyboard or mouse cursor.

Verify accessibility features separately

Steam lists accessibility features as separate store attributes. Check the specific features that affect you instead of inferring them from the Deck label. Depending on your needs, that can include subtitles, adjustable text, color options, remappable controls, or alternatives to rapid button presses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store attributes describe what is listed for the game; they do not prove that every menu, cutscene, or user-created mode follows the same standard. If a feature is essential, look for a current developer description or manual and confirm that it applies to the mode you intend to play. A title can be technically usable on Deck while still lacking an accessibility option you require.

Use the attributes as a checklist of requirements rather than as a general quality score. If subtitles are essential, verify that they cover dialogue and the situations you need. If text size or color treatment matters, look for the exact option in the game’s current documentation. The Deck category cannot substitute for those title-specific checks.

Understand the SteamOS and Proton context

Valve says SteamOS is Linux-based and Proton enables many Windows games to run on it. This explains why a game with no native Linux build may still launch on Deck. It also explains why a low Windows hardware requirement is insufficient evidence: the game must work through the operating-system, graphics, input, and launcher layers involved in SteamOS and Proton.

Valve continuously tests compatibility across its catalog. Those tests provide a useful baseline, but the software stack changes. A game update can introduce a new video option or launcher behavior; a Proton update can fix one title and expose a regression in another. The store category captures Valve’s current assessment rather than a timeless technical property of the game’s executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This context also explains why comparing two Windows games by their listed processor or graphics requirements alone can mislead. The relevant question is not simply whether the Deck is powerful enough on paper; it is whether the particular build, middleware, input scheme, and startup path cooperate with SteamOS and Proton. Use the Windows requirements for a rough idea of scale, never as a compatibility verdict.

Online play and anti-cheat need title-specific checking

For an online game, inspect current developer or store notices about required services, account sign-ins, and anti-cheat. Valve’s March 2022 explanation noted that developers were working on anti-cheat support, but that general statement does not establish the present status of any particular game.

Check the game’s own support documentation or recent store announcements for the mode you care about. Ask whether matchmaking, competitive servers, community servers, and offline play have different requirements. Do not treat a Deck category alone as proof that every online mode currently works, or that it will continue to work after a service-side change.

Make the mode distinction explicit before buying. A single-player campaign, a cooperative mode, and a competitive anti-cheat-protected mode may not have identical requirements. If online play is the main reason you want the title, verify that exact mode rather than relying on evidence that only demonstrates launching or offline play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-purchase workflow

  1. Open the live listing. Use the game’s current Steam store page, not a cached compatibility list.
  2. Find the Deck category. Note whether the listing shows Verified, Playable, or another official compatibility state.
  3. Expand the details. Read the reason for the rating and write down any required settings, touch input, keyboard use, launcher step, or visual issue.
  4. Inspect controller information. Decide whether the listed support matches your intended handheld, docked, or external-controller setup.
  5. Review accessibility attributes. Confirm each feature that is important to you; do not substitute the Deck badge for this check.
  6. Check online requirements. For multiplayer titles, look for current anti-cheat, account, server, and connection notices from the developer or store.
  7. Set your performance expectation. If you need a particular frame rate, resolution, battery duration, or patch behavior, find current title-specific evidence. The compatibility category does not provide a universal target.
  8. Recheck before checkout. Refresh the listing if you researched the game earlier, because ratings and notes can change.

Save the details that affect your decision, not merely the category name. A note that says you need touch input, a manual setting change, or a separate launcher gives you a concrete expectation to compare with your own setup. This is especially useful when choosing among several games during a sale, when a quick badge-only decision is tempting.

How to interpret common buying situations

You want simple handheld play

Favor a listing whose details indicate complete controller navigation and no recurring keyboard, mouse, or launcher work. A Verified category is a useful signal, but still read the notes and confirm the controls feel appropriate for your habits.

You are comfortable with occasional setup

A Playable rating may be a sensible choice when the note describes a one-time adjustment you can make with touch or trackpads. Check whether the adjustment returns after updates, entering a new mode, or switching between docked and handheld play.

You require a specific accessibility feature

Start with the accessibility attributes, not the Deck category. If the required feature is absent from the listing, seek a current developer statement before buying; compatibility status cannot fill that gap.

You mainly play competitive online modes

Make anti-cheat and service compatibility the deciding checks. A game may launch and run in single-player while its competitive mode has a separate requirement or policy.

You need a guaranteed frame rate or battery life

The badge cannot provide that guarantee. Look for current evidence for the exact game version, graphics settings, display mode, and play pattern you expect. Without title-specific evidence, treat performance and endurance as open questions.

You alternate between handheld and docked play

Check whether the qualification depends on touch, trackpads, or a small screen. A setup that is acceptable at a desk may be less convenient in handheld mode, while an external controller can reduce the impact of a keyboard or mouse qualification. Decide using the mode in which you will spend most of your time.

Use the Steam filters to find candidates, then verify each game

Steam’s search interface includes separate filters for Deck compatibility, controller support, and accessibility features. Those filters are useful for narrowing a large library or wish list. They are not a substitute for opening an individual listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, filter for Deck-compatible games, then remove candidates whose controller attributes conflict with your setup. Open the remaining pages, read the qualification text, and check online requirements. A filter can identify a category; only the detail page tells you what that category means for the specific title.

Use filters in stages. First narrow by the Deck category, then apply the controller and accessibility requirements that are non-negotiable for you. Finally inspect each remaining page for notes and online dependencies. This avoids treating a broad search result as proof that every game in the result offers the same handheld experience.

What can change after you buy

  • Game updates: New engines, launchers, graphics settings, or input schemes can alter the experience.
  • Proton updates: Compatibility fixes and regressions can change how a Windows build behaves on SteamOS.
  • SteamOS updates: Operating-system changes can affect drivers, display handling, suspend/resume, or input.
  • Online service changes: Server policies and anti-cheat requirements can change independently of the store badge.

When a previously good experience changes, revisit the game’s live store notes and developer announcements. Compare the new rating details with your original purchase decision rather than assuming the hardware has failed.

Changes do not automatically make the original purchase decision unreasonable. They do mean that the listing is a living status indicator. Rechecking it is the fastest way to see whether Valve has updated the category or qualification and whether the developer has acknowledged a new launcher, input, or service issue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying from the badge alone: The category is a summary; the qualification contains the practical warning.
  • Using Windows requirements as proof: They do not describe the SteamOS and Proton path.
  • Assuming controller support: A game can launch on Deck while still relying on keyboard, mouse, touch, or trackpads.
  • Ignoring accessibility filters: Deck compatibility does not guarantee the features you personally need.
  • Trusting an old status: Valve says ratings are snapshots and can change.
  • Assuming online support: General anti-cheat progress does not confirm the current behavior of a particular title.
  • Expecting a performance promise: Compatibility labels do not specify frame rate, battery duration, resolution, or settings.
  • Confusing launch success with usability: Reaching the main menu does not prove that routine navigation, text entry, or your preferred mode works comfortably.
  • Checking only one play mode: Offline, cooperative, and competitive modes can have different service or anti-cheat requirements.

Sources for Valve’s criteria and live checks

Valve’s SteamOS Game Compatibility page explains the Linux and Proton context. The Steam Deck product page describes the compatibility-rating experience on store listings. Valve’s March 4, 2022 Deck Verified update explains examples such as inconsistent controller prompts and the time-sensitive nature of ratings. The Steam search and filters page demonstrates that Deck compatibility, controller support, and accessibility are separate store attributes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find a game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating?

Open the game’s current Steam store page in the client or browser and locate the Steam Deck compatibility area. Expand it to read the qualification, not just the category icon.

Is Steam Deck Verified a permanent guarantee?

No. Valve describes ratings as snapshots that can change when a game, SteamOS, or Proton changes. Recheck the live listing near purchase and after major updates.

Does a Playable game require a keyboard and mouse?

Not always. The specific note may call for touch, a trackpad, an on-screen keyboard, or a manual setting change. Read the qualification and decide whether that adjustment fits your setup.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Does the Deck badge confirm controller support?

No. Steam lists controller support separately. Check whether menus, text entry, launchers, and gameplay match the controls you plan to use.

How should I check accessibility before buying?

Review Steam’s separate accessibility attributes for the features you need, then consult current developer documentation if the feature is essential. Compatibility status cannot confirm a personal accessibility requirement.

Can a game with no Linux version run on Steam Deck?

Yes, many Windows games run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer on SteamOS. That is why Windows system requirements alone cannot establish Deck compatibility.

Does a compatible badge guarantee online multiplayer or anti-cheat?

No. Check current title-specific developer or store notices for account, server, and anti-cheat requirements, especially for competitive modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam Deck compatibility guarantee a frame rate or battery life?

No. The category describes expected usability, not a universal performance or endurance target. Seek current evidence for the exact game version and settings if those targets matter.

The Bottom Line

Before buying, open the game’s live Steam listing, read the full Deck qualification, and separately verify controller support, accessibility attributes, and online or anti-cheat requirements. Valve’s rating is a useful current snapshot of SteamOS and Proton compatibility, but it can change and does not promise a particular frame rate, battery life, or experience on every setup.
