Start with the game’s Steam Deck compatibility badge. Verified is the best indication that a title should be comfortable without setup. Playable means the game can work but may need a community controller layout, touchscreen input, launcher workaround, or another adjustment. Unsupported means it is currently not functional on Deck, while Unknown means Valve has not checked it. These labels are useful starting points, not permanent guarantees: game updates, middleware, anti-cheat systems, launchers, and Proton versions can change the result.
This guide explains what each label covers, how to judge controls and text readability, what to expect from launchers and online services, and how to test a title before deciding whether it fits your Deck.

What the Steam Deck compatibility labels actually mean
Valve assigns four labels to games in the Steam catalog. The label describes the current experience on Steam Deck, including the game itself and any required middleware or launcher.

A badge is a snapshot rather than a lifetime promise. A developer can update a launcher or anti-cheat component without changing the game’s store page immediately, and a later Proton update can improve or break a previously working configuration. Treat Verified as strong evidence of a low-friction experience, not as a guarantee that every future update will behave identically.

Are the controls supported?
For a game to meet the Verified standard, Valve checks for complete controller support, correct on-screen button prompts, and automatic access to the Deck’s on-screen keyboard whenever text input is required. A title that technically accepts input but displays keyboard keys, omits important actions, or expects a mouse for routine play can fall short of Verified.
What full controller support covers
- Menus and gameplay can be operated with the built-in controls without reaching for a mouse.
- Prompts show the buttons you are actually pressing, rather than Windows keyboard keys or an unrelated controller layout.
- Text fields can call up the on-screen keyboard automatically.
- Important actions are reachable without an awkward workaround or an essential touch-only control.
Playable games often fail one of these comfort tests rather than failing to launch. A community layout may map a mouse cursor to the trackpads, for example, or add a button combination for an action the developer did not map. That can make a game perfectly usable for an experienced owner while remaining less convenient than a Verified title.
Changing a game’s controls
Open the game’s details page in Steam and use its controller settings to select or edit a layout. You can choose an official layout, a community-created layout, or your own mapping. Test every essential action in a safe area before starting a long campaign: movement, camera control, menu navigation, confirmation and cancellation, inventory, map, chat, and any modifier or radial menu.

A mismatch does not always prevent play, but it increases the chance of pressing the wrong button during menus or quick-time events.
Will I be able to read the text?
Valve’s criteria require support for the Deck’s default display resolution—1280×800 or 1280×720—with legible text. Valve’s Steamworks recommendations also encourage developers to provide user-configurable text size and, where possible, contrast controls.

Readability is therefore more than whether a game technically renders. A fixed-size HUD designed for a large monitor, thin gray lettering, or menus that cannot be reached with the controller can make a title effectively uncomfortable even when frame rates are acceptable.
Checks to make before committing to a game
- Can you read subtitles, objective text, inventory labels, and map legends from normal handheld distance?
- Does the game offer a text-size option, subtitle scaling, or a high-contrast setting?
- Are essential notifications visible without opening a separate PC-style window?
- Does changing the Deck’s system scaling help menus, or is the text rendered at a fixed size inside the game?
If a title is Playable because of small text, try its accessibility menu before changing system settings. Enlarging one element can make another overlap, and a UI designed for a mouse may still require the touchscreen for tiny controls. A docked monitor can improve visibility, but it does not turn a controller-incomplete interface into a fully supported one.
Do launchers work on Steam Deck?
A launcher required before the game starts must be navigable with a controller for the game to meet the Verified standard. Valve recommends placing required functions in the game client instead of making players operate a separate launcher.
Common launcher limitations
- A login, news panel, or settings window may expect a mouse pointer.
- The launcher may open at a desktop-oriented scale, making fields difficult to read.
- The on-screen keyboard may not appear automatically when entering an account name or code.
- A launcher update can change focus behavior even when the game itself is unchanged.
A game can still run when its launcher needs the touchscreen or a mouse. That setup caveat is a typical reason for a Playable label. In Game Mode, try selecting fields with the touchscreen and use the Deck’s on-screen keyboard. If the launcher remains awkward, switch to Desktop Mode, where Steam Deck functions like a normal PC, complete the login or configuration, and then return to the game.
Do not assume that finishing a launcher setup once makes the title permanently independent of it. Some services authenticate at every launch, and an online account or updated terms screen can appear again after a patch.

Why Windows games run, and why results vary
Many Deck games do not have a native Linux build. SteamOS runs those Windows versions through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls so they can work with the Deck’s Linux-based operating system.

Valve’s review considers the game and its middleware, not just the main executable. Middleware includes launchers, video components, copy-protection systems, and online services. Anti-cheat is particularly important: a game can render correctly in single-player yet block access to its multiplayer service if its anti-cheat configuration does not support Proton.
Why two apparently similar games can differ
- One title may use a launcher that supports controller navigation while another requires a mouse.
- Different anti-cheat or digital-rights systems have different Proton support.
- A game may depend on a specific Proton version, and a later update can alter behavior.
- Developers can change graphics settings, input handling, or online authentication in a patch.
For that reason, “runs on Steam Deck” is not a single technical condition. A title can launch, play its single-player mode, and still be unsuitable for online play. Check the badge and the game’s current notes, then test the exact mode you care about.
Can you play online and offline?
Valve’s rule is straightforward: “Just like a PC, you’ll need to be online to download games and play online multiplayer games.” You also need an internet connection for any game that requires a live service, account check, or always-online authentication.
Offline play after installation
Once a game is installed, it can generally be played offline unless the developer requires an internet connection. Developers are encouraged to make single-player content available without internet, but that is an encouragement rather than a universal requirement.

- Launch the game once while connected so Steam can finish installation and account checks.
- Verify that the desired single-player mode starts without a network connection.
- Do not rely on offline access for modes that synchronize saves, validate an account, or connect to a live service.
Cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer invitations, and server-side progression may wait until you reconnect. A game can therefore be excellent for travel in its campaign while offering no offline route to its competitive or cooperative modes.
How to check a game before installing it
- Read the Deck badge on the game’s store or library page. Start with Verified, then inspect the explanation for Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
- Identify the mode you need. Separate the single-player campaign from multiplayer, co-op, ranked play, and any always-online component.
- Inspect the control requirements. Look for controller prompts, keyboard-heavy menus, text entry, and launcher navigation.
- Check readability. Confirm that subtitles, objectives, and inventory text are usable at 1280×800 or 1280×720 and look for text-size or contrast options.
- Account for Proton and middleware. A launcher, anti-cheat service, or required sign-in can be the actual compatibility limit.
- Plan a short test. Launch while connected, enter the exact mode you intend to play, open menus, type in a field, and disconnect only after confirming offline behavior.
What to try when a Playable game is awkward
If the controller is incomplete
Try an official or community layout, then verify every essential action. Use the trackpads or touchscreen for occasional pointer work rather than forcing a poor button mapping. If the game constantly asks for a keyboard, it may remain a poor handheld choice even after extensive remapping.
If the launcher will not accept input
Use the touchscreen and on-screen keyboard first. If focus is still broken, open Desktop Mode and operate the launcher with a mouse or trackpad. Complete required sign-in and settings, then return to Game Mode. An update can reset this arrangement, so keep the workaround in mind.
If text is too small
Look for interface scale, subtitle size, HUD scale, and contrast settings. Test a normal gameplay scene as well as menus; some games enlarge subtitles but leave inventory or map text unchanged. If no in-game control exists, a larger display in a docked setup may help, but it cannot fix text that is clipped or permanently fixed at an illegible size.

Confirm that the game’s online service and anti-cheat support Proton. A successful launch is not proof that the service will allow a connection. Test multiplayer before buying add-ons or investing time in progression, and recheck after major game or Proton updates.

Battery expectations and compatibility testing
Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet gives a broad battery-session estimate of two to eight hours, depending on the game. Compatibility labels do not promise a particular battery life. A demanding 3D title, a game running through Proton, high brightness, wireless activity, and an active launcher can all affect runtime.
Use the shortest practical test that answers your question: verify controls in a menu, read a representative dialogue scene, launch the required online mode, and try the campaign without a connection if travel use matters. This reveals more than simply confirming that an executable reaches its title screen.
Verified or Playable: which should you choose?

Using Desktop Mode as a compatibility tool
Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode supports browsing, installing applications, and running programs outside Steam. It is the practical route for launchers and software that were designed for a conventional PC rather than Game Mode. Use it when a setup task genuinely needs a pointer, window management, or a desktop installer; return to Game Mode for the controller-focused play experience.
Desktop Mode does not change a game’s Proton, anti-cheat, or server requirements. It gives you more input and software options, but a service that blocks Proton will still block it, and an unreadable in-game HUD will still be unreadable.
Bottom line
Use Verified as the low-risk choice for controls, readable text, launcher navigation, and normal Deck operation. Choose Playable when you understand the specific compromise and are willing to test a layout, touchscreen launcher, text settings, or Proton behavior. Treat Unsupported as a current stop sign and Unknown as an invitation to verify the exact mode you need. Because badges and software components can change, recheck compatibility after major updates—especially when multiplayer or a required launcher is involved.
