Steam Deck OLED is a SteamOS 3 handheld PC, so Desktop Mode lets you install software outside the Steam storefront. Compatibility depends on each game, launcher, mod loader, emulator, operating system and anti-cheat system.
Valve supplies Windows drivers and installation notes, yet provides them as-is and does not support Windows on Steam hardware. Valve also warns that damage caused by opening or modifying the device is not covered by the product warranty. The practical approach is to treat software changes as owner-managed, keep recovery options available, and avoid hardware modification unless you accept the associated risk.

What Steam Deck OLED supports
The OLED model runs SteamOS 3, an Arch-based Linux distribution. In Gaming Mode you install and launch supported Steam titles; Desktop Mode exposes a conventional Linux desktop where you can add applications, manage files and configure software that is not distributed through Steam.

That PC design is the reason mods, emulators and another operating system are possible. It does not mean that every Windows utility, mod manager, emulator or online game will work. Each title may use a different launcher, save location, graphics API, copy-protection system or anti-cheat service.

A genuine microSDXC UHS-I card is the most direct way to add room for Steam installations, legally owned game images, shader data and mod files. Check the card’s capacity and authenticity before relying on it for a large library. USB-C DisplayPort and USB 3 also support docks, displays and hubs, although a particular accessory’s behavior must be checked against its current specifications.
Running game mods on Steam Deck OLED
Mods are possible, but support is title-specific. A mod may require a Linux-native installer, a Windows mod loader running through Proton, a separate launcher, manual file copying or a particular game version. Some online games prohibit modified files or use anti-cheat systems that can block launches or accounts.
Before installing a mod
- Read the mod author’s requirements for the exact game version and operating system.
- Back up saves somewhere outside the game directory. A mod can change save formats or leave a game unable to load an existing save.
- Record the original game version and keep a clean, unmodified install available for troubleshooting.
- Check the publisher’s rules before using any modification in an online or competitive title.
- Ensure the internal drive or microSD card has enough space for the game, mod files, shader data and a backup copy.
A cautious Desktop Mode workflow
- Switch to Desktop Mode from the Steam power menu and update SteamOS and the game before changing files.
- Obtain the mod and any loader from its legitimate publisher or project page. Confirm that the instructions explicitly cover Steam Deck, Linux, Proton or the relevant Windows environment.
- Install the required application in Desktop Mode, or follow the project’s documented manual-install method. Do not assume that a Windows installer will work unchanged under Proton.
- Point the loader or installer to the correct game directory. Steam libraries on internal storage and on a microSD card use different paths, and launchers can create additional folders.
- Launch the game offline or in a safe test state first. Verify that the title starts, the mod appears and the original save remains usable.
- Keep notes about what was installed. If the game later fails, remove the third-party software and restore the clean installation before seeking support.
Valve’s software guidance notes that third-party Desktop Mode applications can contribute to instability and recommends disabling them while troubleshooting. That is a troubleshooting precaution, not a certification of any mod manager. Valve does not guarantee that a particular mod works on every OLED system.

Common mod failure points
- Wrong game build: an update can change files or APIs required by the mod. Restore the matching version if the project supports it, or wait for an update.
- Proton mismatch: a loader that works with one Proton version may fail with another. Test the version documented by the mod project, then remove third-party additions when diagnosing the base game.
- Launcher or path errors: non-Steam launchers may store files in a different prefix from the game itself. Follow the loader’s path instructions rather than guessing.
- Anti-cheat restrictions: an otherwise functional mod can still be disallowed in an online mode. Use only the publisher-approved configuration for connected play.
- Save corruption or conflicts: restore the backup and reproduce the problem on a clean install before adding mods one at a time.
Emulating games on Steam Deck OLED
Emulators are user-installed Linux or Windows applications; they are not a feature certified by the Deck Verified program. Results vary by emulator maturity, the individual game image, required firmware, controller mapping, graphics API, shader compilation and per-title settings.
Legal starting point
Use only game copies and firmware that you are legally entitled to use. Copyright and circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction, so ownership of original media does not automatically answer every legal question about making or using a digital image. This article does not provide legal advice for a particular country.
Practical setup sequence
- Choose an emulator project that supports SteamOS or the Windows environment you intend to use, and read its current documentation.
- Install it in Desktop Mode. Keep the emulator and game images on storage with sufficient free space; a UHS-I microSDXC card can hold a larger library.
- Supply only legally obtained game images and firmware. Store them in a folder whose location you can back up and identify later.
- Map controls and test one title before importing a large collection. Handheld controls, external controllers and docked displays may need separate profiles.
- Begin with the emulator’s default graphics API and settings. Change one setting at a time when diagnosing rendering errors, crashes or shader stutter.
- Back up save states and memory-card files independently from the game images.
Do not infer emulator performance from the battery estimate or from a Deck Verified badge. Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown labels classify Steam games and their SteamOS compatibility; they do not certify an emulator, a legally obtained image or a particular configuration. No universal frame-rate or battery result applies across emulators and titles.

Installing Windows on Steam Deck OLED
Valve describes Steam Deck hardware as PCs on which other applications and operating systems can be installed. Its Windows Resources page provides Steam Deck OLED drivers and installation notes, but states that the resources are supplied as-is and that Valve cannot provide support for Windows on Steam hardware.

Plan before changing the operating system
- Read Valve’s current Windows Resources instructions for the OLED model. Driver versions and procedures can change, so do not rely on an old copy.
- Back up saves, personal files and any emulator data. Preserve a SteamOS recovery path before altering partitions or boot settings.
- Decide whether Windows will replace SteamOS or coexist with it. That choice affects storage allocation, boot management and recovery complexity.
- Prepare the required Windows installation media and install only the OLED drivers listed by Valve for the relevant hardware.
- After installation, test display output, controls, audio, networking, sleep and any dock or external monitor you plan to use.
- Maintain Windows as you would any PC: apply updates, keep drivers available and document how to return to SteamOS if troubleshooting fails.
Windows can improve compatibility with a launcher or game that does not behave well under SteamOS, but it also removes the integrated SteamOS maintenance experience. Valve’s as-is wording means you should be prepared to diagnose boot, driver and application problems without Valve Windows support.
Storage and accessories for mods, emulation and Windows

- Format and manage the card through SteamOS or the operating system’s documented tools before moving a large library.
- Keep irreplaceable saves and emulator data backed up elsewhere; removable storage is not a backup by itself.
- Use the USB-C port for a compatible dock, display or hub when you need external screens or peripherals. Confirm the accessory’s power, video and USB requirements before purchase.
The stated 50 Wh battery and Valve’s 3–12-hour gameplay estimate are workload-dependent. Emulation, Windows maintenance, high-performance games, external displays and shader compilation can change battery life substantially, so do not treat the upper or lower figure as a guarantee for a particular setup.

Valve’s basic-use guide says: We don’t recommend opening or otherwise modifying your device – any damage that results won’t be covered under your product warranty.
The same guidance says Valve is not responsible for replacing or servicing screws or other components damaged while attempting to open or modify Steam Deck.
This is not the same as saying that every software change or every modification automatically voids every warranty right. The separate Valve Hardware Limited Warranty and Agreement, together with the applicable regional law and the facts of the claim, determines coverage. The important practical boundary is causation: damage resulting from opening or modifying the hardware may be excluded.

Software changes versus hardware work
- Installing a mod, emulator or Windows does not require opening the chassis and is primarily an owner-managed software decision.
- Replacing parts, removing screws, changing cooling components or otherwise opening the device creates the risk described in Valve’s warning.
- A failed component unrelated to a modification may be assessed differently, but only Valve or the applicable regional service process can decide an individual claim.
Prepare for support
Before contacting Steam Support, record the serial number, purchase information, current operating-system state, reproducible symptoms and relevant logs. Explain whether the device is running SteamOS or Windows and whether any hardware work was performed. Follow the current Steam Support instructions because repair procedures and regional eligibility can change.
Troubleshooting decision guide
The game stops launching after a mod
- Disable or remove the third-party mod and test the clean game.
- Verify the game files using Steam’s built-in option if the title is installed through Steam.
- Check that the mod matches the installed game version and Proton or Windows environment.
- Restore the backed-up save only after the unmodified game launches reliably.
An emulator has graphical glitches or stutter
- Confirm that the game image and firmware are legally obtained and intact.
- Return graphics settings to defaults and test a single title.
- Check controller mapping, shader compilation behavior and the emulator’s current compatibility notes.
- Change one graphics or performance setting at a time and keep a known-good profile.
Windows installation or drivers fail
- Return to Valve’s current Windows Resources instructions and confirm that the drivers match Steam Deck OLED.
- Use the preserved recovery path rather than deleting partitions or recovery media while troubleshooting.
- Document the exact error, boot state and driver version before seeking help from Windows or the relevant hardware community.
Hardware damage occurs after opening the case
Stop further disassembly, keep damaged screws or parts, and provide the complete history when contacting support. Valve’s warranty warning means damage linked to the opening or modification may not be covered; do not assume a replacement will be supplied.
