Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want a Steam-centered handheld with an OLED display, built-in trackpads and Valve’s SteamOS environment. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you need Windows 11 for your PC launchers or Game Pass, or prefer its 1080p, 120Hz display and higher-spec published configuration. Neither is a guaranteed fit for every game: check compatibility for the titles and services you actually use, then compare current local prices.

Specifications are not a head-to-head performance test. The Ally X’s listed processor and memory make it the higher-spec configuration on paper, but that does not establish a frame-rate advantage or guarantee that demanding games will run well at native 1080p. The figures above are published by Valve, ASUS and Xbox Wire.
Which screen is better for handheld gaming?
The Steam Deck OLED has the larger display and an OLED panel, while the Ally X has more pixels and a higher refresh-rate ceiling. Those are different strengths, not a universal quality ranking.
Choose the Deck for OLED and a larger panel
Valve specifies a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh up to 90Hz. If OLED’s display character and the Deck’s screen size matter more to you than maximum resolution, this is the more natural match.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Choose the Ally X for resolution and refresh features
ASUS lists a 7-inch 1920 × 1080 IPS panel with refresh up to 120Hz and FreeSync Premium. It offers the higher resolution and refresh ceiling, but the smaller display and IPS panel may not suit someone who values the Deck’s OLED experience.
SteamOS or Windows 11: which fits your game library?
The operating system is one of the biggest practical differences. The Deck uses SteamOS 3, a Linux-based system built around Steam. The Ally X runs Windows 11; ASUS says it can access supported Windows games across Xbox and other PC stores. That flexibility can be important if your library depends on Windows launchers, Game Pass or Windows applications. It does not mean every game or launcher works equally well on a handheld, so check individual titles and their requirements.

For games designed around cursor input, the Deck’s two built-in trackpads offer an alternative to using the analog sticks as a mouse. Both devices have two assignable grip buttons. Consider the controls you use in your actual games rather than treating either layout as a blanket advantage.
What the hardware specifications do—and do not—tell you
Valve lists the Deck OLED with a 6nm Zen 2 APU, 8 RDNA 2 compute units and 16GB of RAM. ASUS lists the Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. Those published configurations favor the Ally X on paper, but the comparison does not include matched game benchmarks. Specifications alone cannot tell you the frame rate you will get in a particular game or whether you will want to lower its resolution or graphics settings.
Battery capacity is not a runtime prediction
The Deck OLED has a 50Wh battery, and Valve gives a manufacturer-stated gameplay range of 3–12 hours. The Ally X has an 80Wh battery, but capacity by itself does not predict how long a charge will last: the game, hardware load, power mode and settings all matter.
In its 2026 battery tests, Tom’s Guide reported 3 hours 12 minutes for the Steam Deck OLED and 2 hours 56 minutes for the ROG Xbox Ally X. These are that publication’s results under its test conditions, not guaranteed runtimes for your games or a universal comparison across settings. ASUS separately advertises an Ally X battery comparison using Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics and Silent mode, comparing the 2025 Ally X with the earlier ROG Ally X. That is not a Deck-versus-Ally test. See Tom’s Guide’s handheld roundup and ASUS’s Ally X product page for those figures and their context.

Weight, storage and expansion
Valve’s published weight for the Deck OLED is approximately 640g; Xbox Wire’s launch specification table lists the Ally X at 715g. The Deck is lighter by those figures, but comfort also depends on grip shape and how a device fits your hands.
Both support microSD expansion. Valve specifies a UHS-I reader for the Deck OLED, while ASUS specifies UHS-II for the Ally X. A card is an optional storage purchase, not a performance upgrade. Check the supported capacity and reader standard, and consider whether the games you plan to store there suit your loading-time expectations.
