For smoother free survival and roguelike games on Steam Deck, tune each game separately: start with its Low or Steam Deck preset, cap it at a frame rate it can hold without repeated dips, match the screen refresh rate where practical, then use lower resolution or FSR to reduce rendering work. Establish stability at the default TDP before trading performance headroom for battery life.
A reliable tuning order
Open the game, then press the Steam button and open the Quick Access performance panel. Turn on a per-game profile so changes apply to this title rather than every game on the Deck. Work through the settings in this order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Choose a sustainable frame-rate cap. Try 40 FPS if the game can maintain it during busy scenes. If it cannot, use a steady 30 FPS. A consistent cap with even frame pacing feels better than a higher cap that repeatedly falls back.
- Match refresh rate when practical. Valve documents 40 FPS paired with a 40 Hz display as an example of even presentation. The LCD model supports up to 60 Hz; the OLED model supports up to 90 Hz.
- Reduce rendering load. Begin with the game’s Low or Steam Deck preset. If frame time remains high, lower resolution or enable FSR when the game offers it.
- Watch the performance overlay. Check frame time, GPU and CPU behavior, and battery draw while you play an ordinary section and the game’s busiest moments.
- Adjust TDP last. Leave the default limit in place while finding a stable target. Lower it only after the target remains steady; reducing TDP saves power but removes performance headroom.
This sequence avoids masking a timing problem with a blanket setting. Free-to-play games differ substantially in simulation load, shader compilation, network activity and Proton behavior, so no single preset is guaranteed to work across the entire genre.

Why these games stutter
Survival games can become CPU-heavy as enemies, items, projectiles or map objects accumulate. A game may run smoothly during exploration and then miss its frame-time budget when a large wave spawns. Roguelikes often produce short bursts when a new room, effect set or procedural area is loaded. The first visit can also trigger shader compilation, creating one-time or recurring pauses.

Network code adds another variable to free-to-play titles. A connection problem does not always lower the displayed frame rate, but it can look like hitching when simulation updates arrive irregularly. On Linux-based Steam Deck installations, Proton compatibility and the game’s rendering path can change behavior between titles. Treat the overlay and repeatable in-game situations as your evidence rather than assuming that a menu preset explains every hitch.
Set a frame-rate target you can actually hold
Stable 30 FPS
Use 30 FPS when 40 FPS is not sustainable. At 30 FPS, each frame has about 33.3 milliseconds to complete. That is a larger time budget than 40 FPS and can give a CPU-limited survival game room to handle enemy waves and simulation spikes. The result is preferable to a nominally higher cap that frequently drops.
Do not judge the cap from an empty starting area. Walk through a crowded base, trigger a large encounter, open inventories, and revisit locations that caused loading hitches. If the frame-time graph stays close to the 33.3 ms budget, 30 FPS is doing its job.

Try 40 FPS when the title can maintain it in its demanding scenes. A 40 FPS frame takes about 25 ms. Valve has described a 40 FPS game paired with a 40 Hz updating display as a presentation in which each refresh can show a new frame. If the game cannot keep that cadence, return to 30 rather than leaving a 40 cap that produces frequent uneven intervals.

45 or 60 FPS
Higher targets are worthwhile only when the game holds them during combat, high enemy counts and area transitions. A 45 FPS cap can align mathematically with a 90 Hz display, while 60 FPS aligns with a 60 Hz display. These are tuning options, not promises of a particular game’s performance. On an LCD Deck, the display maximum is 60 Hz; on an OLED Deck, it is 90 Hz. If the GPU or CPU cannot sustain the target, the lower, consistent option will usually look smoother.
Read frame pacing, not just the peak number
Peak FPS can look impressive while individual frames arrive late. Use the overlay to watch frame time and its spikes. A mostly flat graph near the budget for your chosen cap indicates consistent pacing; tall spikes identify moments to reproduce while changing one setting at a time. Capping below the panel’s maximum can also keep the system from wasting power rendering frames that the display cannot present consistently.
Match the Deck’s refresh rate
Valve’s current Steam Support guidance lists these panel limits:
| Steam Deck model | Maximum refresh rate | Useful matching examples |
|---|---|---|
| LCD | 60 Hz | 30 FPS with 60 Hz; 40 FPS with 40 Hz when that mode is available |
| OLED | 90 Hz | 30 FPS with 60 Hz, 40 FPS with 40 Hz when available, or 45 FPS with 90 Hz when the game sustains it |
To change the display setting, open the Quick Access performance panel while the game is running and use the refresh-rate control exposed by SteamOS. The exact choices can depend on the current SteamOS version and display mode. Select a rate that divides cleanly with your cap when possible; mismatched timing can make otherwise adequate output feel uneven.

If a 40 Hz choice is not offered, keep a stable 30 FPS cap and use the available refresh rate. Do not chase a specific number at the expense of frame-time consistency.
Lower rendering work without ruining readability
Start with the game preset
Choose Low or the game’s Steam Deck preset first. These presets commonly reduce effects, shadows or view distance together, giving you a known baseline. Change individual options only after observing the busy scenes that matter to you; one title may be GPU-limited while another is constrained by CPU simulation.
Resolution and FSR
If the GPU is spending too long drawing each frame, lower the game’s resolution or enable FSR when available. FSR renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for the display, reducing rendering work. More aggressive scaling can soften fine detail and text, so check interfaces, map labels and small item descriptions after every change.

Keep the option that meets your frame-time target while leaving text legible. If FSR raises the frame rate but the CPU remains responsible for long frame times, it will not solve the underlying hitch; use the overlay to verify which component is limiting.

Use TDP limits only after stability is proven
Leave TDP at its default while establishing your cap. The default gives the processor and graphics hardware room to respond to sudden simulation or rendering demands. Once a game holds its target with margin, test a lower TDP in small steps and replay the same demanding sequence.
A lower limit can reduce heat and battery draw, but it also removes headroom. If frame-time spikes appear, the target is no longer stable; restore the previous limit instead of compensating with a higher cap. There is no universal TDP number for every free survival or roguelike game, because workload and engine behavior vary by title.
Use the overlay to identify the bottleneck
- GPU-bound pattern: GPU utilization and frame time rise together. Lower resolution, enable FSR, or reduce GPU-heavy effects.
- CPU-bound pattern: Frame time rises during enemy waves or simulation-heavy scenes while lowering resolution changes little. Keep the lower frame-rate target and avoid spending image-quality budget on settings that cannot remove the CPU limit.
- Loading or shader hitch: A brief spike appears when entering a new area or seeing an effect for the first time. Revisit the same location after the initial compilation and judge whether the hitch repeats.
- Battery or heat concern: Compare battery draw at the same cap before and after lowering TDP. If the cap begins to dip, the power reduction has gone too far.
- Network-looking hitch: If displayed FPS stays steady but actions or simulation updates arrive late, investigate the game’s connection behavior rather than lowering resolution.
Change one control, replay the same sequence, and record whether the frame-time spike moved. This prevents a lower image-quality setting from hiding a CPU, shader or network problem.
Check compatibility before chasing graphics settings
Look at the game’s Deck Verified status in the Steam Library. Valve’s criteria include support for the Deck’s default resolution, good default settings, legible text and Proton support where Proton is used. A game without that status may still run well, but you should expect more manual tuning and occasional incompatibilities.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
If the game behaves differently from its default configuration, open Library > Properties > Compatibility and choose a different Proton tool. Test one tool at a time, restart the game, and repeat the same scene. A Proton change can affect launch behavior, rendering and controller support, so keep the option that is stable for this title rather than assuming the newest choice is automatically best.
Practical profiles for common situations
| Situation | Starting profile | Next adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration is smooth, large waves dip | 30 FPS cap, Low or Steam Deck preset, default TDP | Keep 30 FPS; reduce CPU-irrelevant visual settings only if the overlay shows a GPU limit |
| GPU frame time is high in all scenes | 40 FPS attempt, lower resolution or FSR, default TDP | Return to 30 FPS if 40 cannot hold after the rendering reduction |
| OLED title holds a steady 45 FPS | 45 FPS cap with 90 Hz, default TDP | Lower TDP only if the same demanding scenes remain stable |
| LCD title fluctuates between 40 and 60 | 30 FPS cap with 60 Hz, or 40 FPS with a 40 Hz mode when available | Choose the cap with fewer frame-time spikes, not the higher headline number |
| Unexpected launch or rendering behavior | Verify the game’s status and keep the baseline preset | Test another Proton tool under Library > Properties > Compatibility |
Troubleshooting branches
The game still stutters at a locked cap
Confirm that the cap is genuinely being maintained by watching frame time during the exact event that causes the hitch. If the spike coincides with a new area or effect, repeat it to distinguish a one-time shader event from a recurring workload. If CPU frame time rises during crowds, keep the lower target and reduce background processes or simulation-heavy options exposed by the game.
FSR makes the image too soft
Use a less aggressive scale, raise resolution one step, or return to native resolution and accept the lower frame-rate target. Inspect text and inventory icons, not only the character model. A readable, stable 30 FPS profile is a better result than an indistinct image that briefly reaches 40.
Lowering TDP causes new dips
Restore the default TDP and replay the demanding section. If stability returns, the previous power limit did not leave enough headroom. Keep the default rather than compensating with lower resolution unless battery life is your primary priority and the resulting cap remains consistent.
Changing Proton does not help
Return to the tool that launches reliably, then verify whether the symptom is actually a frame-time issue. Proton cannot fix a CPU-bound simulation or a network delay. Use the overlay and the game’s Deck Verified information to separate compatibility faults from ordinary workload limits.
A repeatable checklist for every new game
- Create a per-game profile in the Quick Access performance panel.
- Start with Low or Steam Deck settings and the default TDP.
- Test 40 FPS in demanding scenes; use 30 FPS if 40 is not consistently attainable.
- Match refresh rate to the cap when practical, respecting the LCD 60 Hz and OLED 90 Hz maximums.
- Lower resolution or enable FSR only when the overlay shows a rendering limit.
- Replay the same combat, crowd and loading situations after each change.
- Check Deck Verified status and test another Proton tool through Library > Properties > Compatibility if behavior is abnormal.
- Reduce TDP only after the target remains stable, and undo the reduction if frame-time spikes return.
The best Steam Deck setting is therefore the least demanding profile that remains steady in the game’s worst ordinary moments, with a refresh rate that presents those frames evenly and image quality that keeps essential text readable.
