Is the Steam Deck actually sold out?
Steam Deck availability has been volatile, particularly in North America. Reporting in May 2026 said that newly restocked inventory sold out again after a major price increase, while also indicating that LCD models had effectively been phased out and OLED models had become the main new-buy option. PC Gamer reported on the North American stock situation, but that does not prove that every Steam Deck is sold out everywhere.

The important distinctions are:
- OLED versus LCD: LCD availability may represent remaining inventory rather than ongoing production. That does not mean Valve has permanently discontinued the entire Steam Deck line.
- Region: US, Canadian, European and other markets can have different stock levels.
- Configuration: One storage option may be unavailable while another remains in stock.
- Store: Valve’s Steam store, authorized retailers and used marketplaces may show different availability.
- Timing: A “sold out” notice can describe a temporary restock gap rather than a permanent end of supply.
Check the official Steam Deck store page before deciding that you must buy an alternative. The reported US price of a 1TB OLED model reached $949 after the 2026 increase, but that figure should be checked directly because prices and promotions can change. At that level, the Deck’s original value advantage is much smaller.
What makes a good Steam Deck alternative?
The most important choice is not the processor name. It is whether you want SteamOS simplicity or Windows flexibility.
SteamOS
SteamOS provides a console-like interface, tight Steam integration and a generally simpler handheld experience. It can make suspend-and-resume, controller navigation and game updates feel more natural than on a conventional Windows desktop.
It is not universal compatibility, however. Proton support varies by game, and some anti-cheat systems or Windows-first launchers may require Windows. A game being available on Steam does not guarantee that it will work identically on SteamOS.
Windows
Windows handhelds can access Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and other launchers. That is a major advantage for multiplayer games and libraries spread across multiple services.
The trade-off is more desktop interaction: Windows updates, launcher accounts, notifications, driver management and handheld control software. Steam running on Windows does not recreate SteamOS’s interface, suspend behavior or power management.
Performance, battery and display
Compare the chip generation and power limit, not just the processor’s marketing name. More performance generally requires more power and can mean additional heat, fan noise and shorter battery life.
Battery capacity is best expressed in watt-hours, but it is not a direct runtime guarantee. Brightness, resolution, refresh rate, frame caps, TDP, the game engine, operating system and upscaling all affect endurance.
Display size and specification matter too. Resolution, refresh rate, variable refresh rate, aspect ratio and OLED-versus-LCD technology can change both image quality and power use. Controls, trackpads, rear buttons, grip shape, weight, detachable controllers and kickstands can matter just as much during long sessions.

1. Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS: the closest Steam Deck replacement
Best for: Buyers who want SteamOS but would prefer newer hardware and a larger display.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Legion Go S is the most direct substitute because selected configurations ship with SteamOS rather than requiring the buyer to install and configure another operating system. It preserves the Deck’s software philosophy while offering a newer hardware platform and a larger chassis.
Lenovo offers configurations including Z2 Go and Z1 Extreme versions. Do not treat them as equivalent: the Z1 Extreme model is the more performance-focused option and may cost substantially more. Secondary coverage has cited approximate prices around $549 for a lower-cost Z2 Go version and around $749 for a higher-performance configuration, but the exact US price and stock should be confirmed on Lenovo’s official Legion handheld page.
What it does better than Steam Deck
- Offers a newer platform than the original Deck hardware.
- Provides a larger display and more modern configuration choices.
- SteamOS avoids the desktop-heavy setup associated with Windows handhelds.
What it does worse
- It is generally larger and may be more expensive than the original entry-level Deck.
- A larger, higher-resolution screen can use more power.
- The Z2 Go model should not be confused with the faster Z1 Extreme version.
- SteamOS still does not guarantee support for every anti-cheat system or Windows-first game.
Do not buy it if: you want the smallest possible handheld, the lowest price, or unrestricted access to every Windows launcher and multiplayer title.
2. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X (2025): the premium performance choice
Best for: Buyers who prioritize performance, memory, battery capacity and broad Windows game compatibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ASUS lists the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 in the US. Its configuration includes Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD and a 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz display. ASUS lists its weight at 715g and its processor as an eight-core, 16-thread chip with an NPU rated up to 50 TOPS. The device also has an 80Wh battery.
See the official ROG Xbox Ally X product page and ASUS specifications for the current configuration.
What it does better than Steam Deck
- Uses a newer, higher-performance platform aimed at demanding PC games.
- 24GB of memory gives it more headroom than many lower-memory handhelds.
- The 80Wh battery is substantially larger than the capacity found in many competing handheld designs.
- Windows supports Game Pass, Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net and other launchers.
What it does worse
- At $999.99, it is not a budget replacement for the Deck.
- Windows remains more cumbersome than SteamOS for handheld use, despite the Xbox-focused full-screen interface.
- Higher peak performance does not mean every game will run at high settings on battery.
- Buyers may need to manage Windows updates, drivers, launcher updates and per-game settings.
Distinguish this model from the older 2024 ROG Ally X. The names are similar, but they are different generations.

Best for: Buyers who want a new Windows handheld around the $600 mark and do not require SteamOS.
ASUS lists the standard 2025 ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 in the US. It uses Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of onboard memory and AMD Radeon graphics. Its display is a 7-inch 1920×1080 panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.
The official ASUS product page is the best place to confirm the current price and specification.
What it does better than Steam Deck
- Provides current Windows access to Game Pass and multiple PC storefronts.
- Offers a 1080p, 120Hz display.
- Is a current new product with warranty coverage rather than an older discounted device.
What it does worse
- It should not be treated as a performance match for the Ally X.
- 16GB of memory may be a meaningful limitation in some newer games.
- Windows setup and maintenance remain the main usability compromise.
- It lacks the Deck’s SteamOS-first experience.
Discounted older ROG Ally and Ally X models may appear attractive, but check the exact generation, warranty status, battery condition and retailer reputation before buying.

What it does better than Steam Deck
- The 8-inch 16:10 display gives desktop interfaces and small text more room.
- The 48–120Hz variable-refresh range can help match display behavior to changing frame rates.
- Windows provides access to Game Pass and other PC launchers.
What it does worse
- It is less compact than a standard 7-inch handheld.
- Windows introduces the same setup and maintenance costs as the ASUS alternatives.
- Intel handheld performance can vary with drivers, firmware, power limits and game support.
- It is not automatically faster than every AMD-based competitor.
Do not buy it if: SteamOS simplicity or the lowest possible purchase price matters more than screen size.
Which handheld should you buy?
Choose the Legion Go S if you want SteamOS
It is the most natural replacement for a buyer who wanted a Steam Deck primarily because of its console-like software. Accept the larger body and potentially higher price in exchange for newer hardware and a larger screen. Confirm whether you are buying the Z2 Go or Z1 Extreme model.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want maximum premium capability
The Ally X is the clearest choice among these four if you use Game Pass, Epic, GOG or Battle.net and want the strongest premium hardware configuration. Its $999.99 price makes it a very different proposition from the original affordable Deck, so buy it for portability and flexibility rather than value alone.
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if you want a new handheld around $600
It is the most obvious current Windows option for buyers who cannot justify the Ally X. It offers broad launcher compatibility and a 1080p/120Hz display, but its 16GB memory and lower-tier processor mean it is not simply a smaller Ally X.
Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ if screen size matters most
The Claw’s main reason to exist in this comparison is its 8-inch 16:10 screen. It is worth considering if readability and workspace matter more than compactness, but verify the precise regional model before comparing price or performance.
Should you buy a used or refurbished Steam Deck?
A used Deck can still be the best-value option if it is materially cheaper than current alternatives. Before buying, check:
- Battery health and charging behavior.
- Analog sticks, buttons, triggers, trackpads and touchscreen.
- SSD health, storage capacity and microSD-card functionality.
- Screen condition, backlight and dead pixels.
- Proof of ownership, seller reputation and return rights.
- Whether the price is genuinely below available new hardware.
Do not pay an inflated marketplace price for older Deck hardware merely because official stock is temporarily unavailable. LCD units may be harder to replace if Valve has moved on from manufacturing that version.
Accessories and setup costs
Budget for more than the handheld itself. Depending on how you play, you may need a microSD card, protective case, screen protector, sufficiently powerful USB-C charger, dock or USB-C hub and a Bluetooth controller for docked gaming. Windows handhelds may also benefit from a keyboard and mouse during initial setup and troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
There is no single replacement for the Steam Deck. If SteamOS is the reason you wanted one, start with the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS edition. If you want broad Windows compatibility and premium hardware, choose the ROG Xbox Ally X. The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the lower-cost current Windows choice, while the MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the option for buyers who want a larger 16:10 display.
Before paying a markup, check Valve’s store, compare the exact model and generation, and decide whether you are replacing the Deck’s software experience or simply looking for more powerful handheld PC hardware.
