Yes. A Steam Deck can access Discord, Spotify and YouTube, but not as built-in, console-style SteamOS apps. The practical route is SteamOS’s Linux desktop and a browser; Discord also offers a Linux desktop client, while Spotify’s Linux client is explicitly not actively supported. You can add a browser or desktop program to Steam as a non-Steam game, but that does not guarantee native Game Mode integration, overlays, notifications or seamless background multitasking.
| Service | Works on Steam Deck? | Best starting method | Native SteamOS app? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord | Yes, with qualifications | Browser or Linux client | No built-in integration |
| Spotify | Yes | Web player | No built-in integration |
| YouTube | Yes | Browser | No native app |
Why these services work on Steam Deck
SteamOS is an Arch Linux-based operating system with a KDE Plasma desktop. Valve describes Desktop Mode as a normal PC environment where you can browse the internet, install applications and run programs outside Steam (SteamOS; Valve’s Steam Deck guide). That makes a browser-based service accessible even when Valve has not published a dedicated SteamOS app.
“Supports” therefore means usable on the Deck as a Linux PC. It does not mean that Discord, Spotify or YouTube is preinstalled, certified for every SteamOS release, or designed for the controller-first Game Mode interface.
Switch to Desktop Mode
- Press the Steam button.
- Select Power.
- Choose Switch to Desktop.
SteamOS labels can change in updates, but this is Valve’s documented route. Desktop Mode is the best place to sign in, install software, configure audio and troubleshoot browser permissions.

Discord on Steam Deck
Browser version: the least complicated option
Open a browser in Desktop Mode, visit Discord and sign in. This avoids forcing a distribution-specific package onto SteamOS and is the easiest fallback if the desktop client causes problems.
Linux desktop client: possible, but not SteamOS-certified
Discord publishes Linux downloads in .deb, .tar.gz, .rpm and .pkg.tar.zst formats (Discord downloads). Its listed minimum Linux distributions are Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, Debian 11 or newer, openSUSE 16.2 or newer and Fedora Linux 32 or newer (system requirements). SteamOS is not among those named distributions.
Discord’s manual installation page documents Debian commands such as sudo dpkg -i package.deb and sudo apt install ./package.deb (installation guide). Those are Debian/Ubuntu instructions, not verified SteamOS instructions; do not paste them into SteamOS assuming package compatibility.
Opening Discord from Game Mode
- Install or open Discord in Desktop Mode.
- Open Steam and select Add a Game → Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Select Discord, then return to Game Mode and launch it from the non-Steam section of your Library.
This is a shortcut workaround, not native Discord integration. Window switching, scaling, controller focus and background operation can vary by SteamOS and Steam client version.

Voice chat, streaming and notifications
- Configure the microphone and output device in Desktop Mode before relying on a call. The Deck has dual microphones, Bluetooth 5.0 and a 3.5-mm headset/mic jack (hardware specifications).
- Discord is primarily a mouse-and-keyboard application. Trackpads and the touchscreen help, but navigation is not as console-native as Steam’s interface.
- Voice chat may work while a game runs, but a non-Steam launch does not promise a reliable overlay, notifications or instant switching.
- Screen capture, game capture and audio sharing can differ from Windows. Test a private call before depending on streaming.
- Streaming adds CPU, GPU, memory and network load. Discord recommends current software, sensible stream quality and reducing unnecessary open tabs when troubleshooting (Discord requirements).
Spotify links and Discord
Spotify can be connected through Discord’s Connections menu to display listening activity. Spotify’s Listen Along feature requires Premium, and advertisements on a free account can produce silence for listeners during ad playback (Spotify’s Discord instructions).
Spotify on Steam Deck
Use the web player first
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open a supported browser.
- Visit Spotify’s web player, sign in and start playback.
Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari among supported desktop browser families (web-player help). The browser route avoids distribution-specific package maintenance and is the most defensible general recommendation for SteamOS.
Fix protected-content and DRM errors
- Update the browser.
- Enable protected content or DRM; Firefox may prompt you to enable DRM content.
- Try another supported browser.
- Use a private/incognito window to rule out extensions and stale cookies.
Spotify identifies Widevine or protected-content settings as a cause of some playback failures (Spotify troubleshooting).
Linux client: an optional, unsupported path
Spotify publishes a Linux client, but calls Linux a “labor of love” and says it is not a platform that we actively support. Its documented commands target Ubuntu/Debian and Snap environments (Spotify for Linux), not SteamOS. It may be workable for experienced Linux users, but the web player is easier to remove and less likely to create package conflicts.

Background playback and controls
A browser or client may continue playing while a game runs, but suspension, memory pressure and switching between Game Mode and Desktop Mode can interrupt it. Keyboard shortcuts and browser media controls do not necessarily map to the Deck’s buttons. Do not assume web-player offline downloads; Spotify’s device guidance also says one account can play on only one device at a time (supported devices).
For dependable physical controls, a Bluetooth or wired headset can help, but a separate phone is often simpler when the Deck is under heavy game load.
YouTube on Steam Deck
Desktop Mode access
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open a browser.
- Go to YouTube and sign in if needed.
This is ordinary browser use supported by Valve’s PC-style Desktop Mode, not a special YouTube compatibility layer (Valve guide).
Reach YouTube from Game Mode
Add the browser as a non-Steam game through Add a Game → Add a Non-Steam Game. Some browser and Steam shortcut workflows can target a YouTube page, but exact kiosk or shortcut behavior varies by browser and SteamOS build. The result is still a browser shortcut, not a native YouTube application.

Playback limitations
- Mouse, touch and trackpads are usually more practical than a gamepad for browsing subscriptions and comments.
- Full-screen video is generally easiest in Desktop Mode.
- Resolution, brightness, Wi-Fi, hardware acceleration and a simultaneously running game affect quality, battery life and smoothness.
- Background playback is not guaranteed. YouTube Premium features depend on the account and service; the Deck does not create console-style background playback by itself.
- Sharing YouTube through Discord can encounter capture, DRM, audio-routing or performance limitations.
Game Mode versus Desktop Mode
| Task | Desktop Mode | Game Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Install packages and browser extensions | Best option | Not the normal workflow |
| Sign in and manage tabs | Best option | Possible only through a launched shortcut |
| Configure microphone, speakers and Bluetooth | Best option | Less convenient for desktop apps |
| Controller-first navigation and suspend/resume | Limited | Best option |
| Third-party overlays, notifications and background apps | More flexible, still application-dependent | Not guaranteed |
SteamOS’s Game Mode is optimized for games and quick suspend/resume (SteamOS). Adding a program to the Steam library gives it a launch entry; it does not grant Steam’s overlay, scaling, notifications, capture or media-key behavior.

“I only want YouTube.”
Use a browser in Desktop Mode. It requires no package installation and provides the clearest sign-in and full-screen experience.
“I want music while gaming.”
Start with Spotify’s web player. It is the least invasive option, but background continuity and one-button controls are not guaranteed. The Linux client may feel more app-like, yet Spotify does not actively support Linux.
“I need Discord voice chat.”
Try the browser or Linux client in Desktop Mode, configure the microphone and output, then add the working route as a non-Steam game if you need Game Mode access. Test it with the game you intend to play.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
“I want to stream games to Discord.”
Expect more troubleshooting than voice and text chat. Capture paths, shared audio and hardware acceleration on Linux should be tested in advance rather than assumed to match Windows.
“I want all three services open at once.”
Running Discord, Spotify, YouTube and a demanding game increases memory use, CPU/GPU load, battery drain, fan noise and audio-routing complexity. A phone or second device for Discord or music is often the more reliable arrangement.
Audio hardware that helps
The Deck’s 3.5-mm jack, USB-C connectivity and Bluetooth 5.0 support cover wired and wireless headsets (official specifications). A wired headset is generally the safer choice for voice-chat latency and microphone consistency; Bluetooth is convenient for casual listening but can expose codec, latency or microphone-quality limitations. A dock can add a monitor, keyboard and mouse for desktop-style Discord and YouTube, but it does not create native service integration (Valve Docking Station).
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Return to Desktop Mode and update the browser.
- Try a private window, then test another supported browser.
- For Spotify, verify Widevine/protected-content playback.
- Recheck the selected microphone, speakers and Bluetooth connection.
- If the desktop client fails, use the browser version.
- Lower Discord stream quality and close unnecessary tabs.
- Restart Steam after moving between Desktop Mode and Game Mode if a shortcut or audio device is missing.
- Do not apply Ubuntu/Debian package commands to SteamOS without understanding the compatibility and maintenance consequences.
The Bottom Line
The Steam Deck supports Discord, Spotify and YouTube functionally because SteamOS is a Linux PC with a full desktop. For the smoothest results, use Desktop Mode and browsers first; treat Linux clients and non-Steam Game Mode shortcuts as workarounds, and test voice chat, capture, background playback and audio routing before relying on them.
