The practical answer: use CSS Loader when you want to change Steam’s appearance, Decky Loader when you want community plugins that add functions, and Desktop Mode when you need the Linux desktop for setup or general applications. They are complementary, not three competing theme apps. A typical customization workflow uses Desktop Mode to install Decky, then installs CSS Loader from Decky’s in-console store.
What each Steam Deck customization option actually does
Steam Deck UI customization is easier once the three pieces are separated by role. Themes affect the look of Steam. Plugins add or modify functions through a community launcher. Desktop Mode is the Deck’s Linux desktop environment, not a theme manager, but it is where some setup work begins and where you can install broader desktop applications.

| Option | Primary purpose | Where you use it | Who maintains it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSS Loader | Visual styling and themes for Steam | Installed and used through Decky; styles can affect Steam desktop and Big Picture-style interfaces | Community project | Appearance changes depend on compatibility with Steam’s changing interface |
| Decky Loader | Launcher and manager for community plugins | Mostly Gaming Mode after installation; its installer workflow starts in Desktop Mode | Community project; plugins have separate developers | Plugin availability and maintenance vary, and SteamOS updates can require repair |
| Desktop Mode | Full Linux desktop and application environment | Power menu → Switch to Desktop | Part of the Steam Deck software environment | It is a separate desktop session, not a replacement for Gaming Mode’s console interface |
That distinction prevents a common mistake: installing Desktop Mode does not itself install themes, and CSS Loader is not a general plugin platform. Decky provides the plugin layer; CSS Loader is one of the visual tools that can run through it.

For a different color scheme, layout, or visual style
Install CSS Loader through Decky. DeckThemes describes CSS Loader as a styling engine for Steam that can customize both desktop Steam and the Big Picture-style interface used on the Deck. This is the appropriate route for themes and other appearance changes.
For extra controls or system features
Install Decky Loader, then choose plugins from its built-in browser. The Decky project lists examples such as menu styling, system sounds, screen saturation, and additional system settings. A plugin is an individual project, so its features, update frequency, and compatibility are not uniform.
For desktop applications or file-based setup work
Switch to Desktop Mode. Valve describes the Deck as providing access to a Linux desktop where applications can be installed. Decky’s documented installer also begins there. Desktop Mode is therefore the right answer when the task involves a desktop installer, file manager, browser, or another Linux application rather than a Gaming Mode visual tweak.

What you need before starting
The software routes do not require a paid theme subscription or a special accessory. You need a Steam Deck, an internet connection for downloading the installer and plugins, and enough time to restart between Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode. A keyboard and mouse are optional. Decky documents USB-C and Bluetooth connections, while the Deck’s trackpad and on-screen keyboard can handle basic text entry and navigation.
Keep the Deck’s power source in mind during setup, particularly if you are downloading several files or restarting more than once. Close games before switching sessions, and save any open Desktop Mode work. The safest preparation is simple: know how to open the Power menu, identify the official Decky project repository, and have a way to undo the last change.
How to install Decky Loader on Steam Deck
The following sequence reflects the Decky maintainers’ documented workflow. It is project guidance, not a guarantee that every future SteamOS release will present identical controls.
- Open the Power menu. From Gaming Mode, open the Deck’s power controls.
- Switch to Desktop. Select Switch to Desktop and wait for the Linux desktop session to load.
- Download the installer. Obtain the installer file from the Decky Loader project repository using the Desktop Mode browser. Use the project’s own repository rather than an untrusted mirror.
- Run the installer file. Open the downloaded file and follow the installer prompts.
- Choose a release channel. Select the latest stable release for normal use. The project describes stable as the version intended for most users; prereleases are primarily for plugin developers and may not be fully stable.
- Return to Gaming Mode. Launch the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut supplied by the project, or use the system’s normal restart/session controls if the shortcut is not visible.
- Verify the launcher. In Gaming Mode, open the Quick Access menu. A plug-shaped Decky icon should be available if the installation loaded correctly.
A keyboard and mouse are conveniences, not prerequisites. Decky documents USB-C and Bluetooth keyboard-and-mouse connections, while the Deck’s trackpad and on-screen keyboard can handle the same basic installer tasks.

How to install themes with CSS Loader
CSS Loader is installed from Decky’s built-in store on Steam Deck. You do not need to manually copy a theme file for the documented in-interface installation.
- Enter Gaming Mode after Decky has been installed.
- Open Quick Access. Press the button that opens the Quick Access menu.
- Open Decky. Select the plug icon.
- Open the store. In Decky, choose its built-in plugin store.
- Search for “CSS Loader”. Use that exact name in the store search field.
- Select Install. Wait for Decky to finish installing the styling engine.
- Open CSS Loader and choose a style. Apply a theme or styling option from the CSS Loader interface, then check the Steam UI for the result.
The styling engine can target both Steam’s desktop interface and its Big Picture-style interface, but an individual theme can behave differently as Steam changes. If a theme produces broken spacing, unreadable text, or a missing control, disable that style in CSS Loader before troubleshooting Decky itself.
What is Decky Loader, and what can its plugins do?
Decky Loader is a community homebrew launcher and manager for Steam Deck plugins. It is not a Valve-supported plugin system. Its job is to provide a place where plugins can be installed, opened, and managed from the Deck’s console-oriented interface.
Examples of plugin categories
- Interface changes: menu styling and other presentation adjustments.
- Audio and atmosphere: system-sound changes.
- Display tuning: controls such as screen-saturation adjustments.
- Additional settings: tools that expose system options not presented in the standard interface.
- Visual theming: CSS Loader, which provides the styling engine used for themes.
These examples describe categories, not a promise that every named plugin will remain available. Each plugin has its own developer and maintenance schedule. Read the plugin’s description and recent compatibility information before installing it, and avoid adding several changes at once if you want an easy rollback path.

You can use Desktop Mode for desktop work, but it does not replace Gaming Mode as the Deck’s console interface. Desktop Mode is a separate Linux desktop environment with support for installing and running applications. Gaming Mode is where the Decky plug icon, CSS Loader controls, and the normal game-library experience are most convenient.
Use Desktop Mode when you need to
- Run the Decky installer.
- Download or manage files with desktop applications.
- Install and use Linux desktop software.
- Connect a keyboard and mouse for easier text entry and file management.
Return to Gaming Mode when you need to
- Open Decky from Quick Access.
- Install CSS Loader through Decky’s store.
- Apply and test a Steam UI theme while using the normal handheld interface.
- Launch games with the Deck’s standard console controls.
The Deck’s built-in trackpad and on-screen keyboard are sufficient for many setup tasks. A physical keyboard and mouse simply reduce friction in Desktop Mode, especially when entering search terms or navigating installer dialogs.
Gaming Mode versus Desktop Mode: which is better for customization?
| Task | Gaming Mode | Desktop Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Install or open Decky plugins | Best fit after Decky is installed; use Quick Access and the plug icon | Useful for the initial installer or repair |
| Apply and preview a Steam theme | Most convenient because it shows the handheld interface you are changing | Can display desktop Steam, but it is not the primary Decky workflow |
| Download an installer or manage files | Less convenient | Best fit because it provides the Linux desktop and applications |
| Play games | Designed for this use | Possible only through desktop applications and less console-focused controls |
Switching sessions is not a sign that the installation failed. It is part of the documented division of labor: Desktop Mode supplies the desktop tools, while Gaming Mode supplies the integrated handheld interface.

Maintenance, updates, and compatibility
The main cost of this customization route is maintenance rather than money. Decky and its plugins are community-maintained, and SteamOS or Steam client updates can change the environment they depend on.

What happens after a SteamOS update?
The Decky project explicitly warns: “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” If the plug icon is missing after an update, the project’s documented first response is to rerun the installer and install the stable branch. A prerelease is another troubleshooting option when the stable build does not restore compatibility, but the project positions prereleases mainly for plugin developers and warns that they may not be fully stable.
How to reduce update-related problems
- Prefer the stable Decky release for a normal gaming device.
- Install plugins from Decky’s built-in browser or other sources you trust; the project does not recommend installing plugins from untrusted sources.
- Keep track of which plugins and themes you enabled so you can disable the newest change first when a problem appears.
- Expect a theme or plugin to need an update after Steam’s interface changes.
- Do not treat a successful installation as a permanent guarantee across SteamOS updates.
How do I remove Decky?
The Decky project documents uninstalling by rerunning its installer and selecting the uninstall option. This is preferable to deleting random files from Desktop Mode because the installer knows which components it placed on the system.
Cost, convenience, and the real trade-off
CSS Loader, Decky Loader, and Desktop Mode are software paths, so the central customization cost is not a required purchase. The trade-off is your time: you must switch sessions, read plugin notes, and occasionally repair the installation after an update. A Bluetooth keyboard or USB-C keyboard can make Desktop Mode faster, but it is a convenience rather than a requirement. A mouse can be paired for the same reason.
Do not assume that a theme or plugin is covered by Valve support simply because it appears on the Deck. Decky identifies itself as a homebrew project, and individual plugins have their own maintainers. If you need a device that behaves exactly like an unmodified Steam Deck after every update, staying with the standard interface may be the lower-maintenance choice.

Troubleshooting common failures
The plug icon is missing
- Confirm that you returned to Gaming Mode after running the installer.
- Restart the Deck and check Quick Access again.
- If the problem followed a SteamOS update, rerun the Decky installer from Desktop Mode.
- Install the stable branch first. If it still fails and you understand the stability trade-off, test the project’s prerelease channel.
CSS Loader installed, but the theme looks broken
- Disable the most recently applied theme or style.
- Restart Gaming Mode and check whether the standard interface returns.
- Apply one style at a time so you can identify an incompatible theme.
- Look for a maintained version of the theme before treating the issue as a Decky installation failure.
A plugin causes unexpected behavior
Open Decky and disable the individual plugin rather than removing the entire loader immediately. If the interface is unusable, return to Desktop Mode and use the project’s documented installer/uninstaller workflow. Because plugins are maintained independently, the correct fix depends on the specific plugin and the SteamOS or Steam client version in use.
Desktop Mode controls are awkward
Connect a keyboard and mouse over USB-C or Bluetooth if available. If you do not have them, use the Deck’s trackpad and on-screen keyboard; those are documented alternatives for the installer workflow.

A downloaded installer does not open
Check that you obtained the file from the Decky project repository and that you are opening it in Desktop Mode. Avoid replacing it with a random copy from a forum or file mirror. If the project has changed its installer instructions, follow the current instructions in its repository rather than forcing an older method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A low-risk installation and testing sequence
- Install only Decky first and verify that the plug icon appears in Gaming Mode.
- Open the plugin store and install CSS Loader by itself.
- Apply one visual style and check menus, text, and controls.
- Use the Deck normally for a while before adding another plugin.
- Record which style and plugins are active so you can reverse the newest change.
- After a SteamOS update, check Decky before assuming a theme is at fault.
This staged approach does not eliminate compatibility issues, but it makes the cause easier to identify. It also keeps the standard Steam interface available as a fallback instead of changing several layers at once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Steam Deck UI customization worth it?
It is worthwhile when you have a specific outcome in mind. CSS Loader is a focused solution for visual changes. Decky broadens the device with community features, but adds a maintenance obligation because each plugin can fall out of compatibility independently. Desktop Mode is valuable even if you never install a theme: it is the environment for the Decky installer and for Linux applications.
The safest approach is incremental. Install Decky from the project’s documented source, choose the stable release, add CSS Loader if you want visual styling, and then enable only the plugins you can identify and trust. Keep Desktop Mode available for repair work, and expect to rerun the installer after some SteamOS updates. That gives you meaningful customization without confusing a community add-on with an officially supported part of SteamOS.
