If your Steam Deck says a game is unable to sync, don’t launch it yet if you care about the save. The newest progress may still be on your PC or another device, and starting the game before Steam reconciles the files can create a conflict or overwrite the version you want. Check the old device first, then work through the fixes below.
“Unable to sync” means Steam could not complete an upload or download; it does not by itself mean the save is gone. A conflict is different: Steam has found different local and cloud versions and needs you to choose. A game without Steam Cloud support may keep saves only on the device where you played.
Start by identifying what is failing
Before changing settings, work out whether the problem is limited to one game or affects Steam Cloud more broadly. The pattern helps narrow the cause.
| What you see | Likely cause to check first | First safe action |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails; other games sync | That game’s Cloud support, per-game setting, or save implementation | Check the game’s Store page and Properties |
| Several Cloud-enabled games fail | Network, Steam client, account, or service issue | Reconnect to another network and restart the Deck |
| A conflict appears after offline play | The local and cloud copies diverged | Compare the versions before choosing one |
| The newer save is on a PC, not the Deck | The PC may not have uploaded it, or the Deck may have an older copy | Keep the PC save intact; close the game there and let Steam finish syncing |
| The game has no Steam Cloud feature listed | Its saves may be local-only or handled by another system | Check the developer’s save-transfer guidance |
Steam Cloud only syncs the files a game’s developer has configured. A Cloud indicator does not guarantee that every save, mod, or settings file is included. Steam explains Cloud support and conflicts in its Steam Cloud FAQ.

Fix 1: Confirm Cloud support and enable synchronization
Start here if only one title is affected.
- Open the game’s Steam Store page and look in its feature list or information panel for Steam Cloud.
- On the Deck, press the Steam button and open Settings → Cloud. Make sure the global option to enable Steam Cloud synchronization for supported applications is on.
- In the Library, open the game’s Properties → General and check that its game-specific Cloud synchronization option is enabled.
- Restart Steam after changing a setting, then check the game’s cloud status again.
Menu wording and placement can vary with Steam client updates. Enabling Cloud cannot make an unsupported game or an excluded save file sync. Don’t disable Cloud as a first-line fix: progress can be left only on the local device, complicating recovery.
Fix 2: Restart and update the Deck
A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary Steam client or system problem, though it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Open Steam → Settings → System and install any available SteamOS or client updates.
- Choose Steam → Power → Restart.
- Reconnect to the internet, open the Library, and check the game’s cloud status.
Valve includes updates and restarting in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance. If you use third-party software that might affect the game or Steam, exit it while testing.

Fix 3: Reconnect or test another network
Steam Cloud needs an internet connection. If the Deck is offline, Steam may defer synchronization until it reconnects; the local and cloud copies can then differ.
- Press the Steam button and open Settings → Internet. Confirm the Deck is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi. If your router offers both, try its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Try a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If available, test wired Ethernet through a compatible dock or USB-C adapter.
- Restart your router if other devices are also having connection trouble, then check whether Steam reports a service problem.
If Cloud fails only on one network, the router, interference, proxy, firewall, or ISP configuration may be involved. University networks and other restricted connections can block Steam traffic. Valve’s Steam Deck network troubleshooting page covers Wi-Fi bands, wired tests, network equipment, and connection restrictions.
Fix 4: Close the game on every other device
A PC or another Steam device may still have the latest save—or may not have finished uploading it. Don’t uninstall the game or delete save files from that device.

- Exit the game completely on the PC or other device.
- Leave Steam running there briefly and wait for its Cloud activity to finish.
- Wake the Deck, confirm it is online, and retry the sync before opening the game.
- Until one copy is confirmed synchronized, avoid playing on both devices.
If the newest progress is still on the other device, preserve it. Steam notes that unsynced progress may remain on the original machine even when it is missing from another device; see its Cloud troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 5: Retry synchronization from the Library
If the connection is back but the cloud indicator is stuck, use the game’s Library status rather than launching it to “force” a sync.
- Open the game’s Library page and select its cloud-status indicator if one is shown.
- Choose the available retry or sync action, if offered, and wait for Steam to finish.
- If there is no visible retry control, restart Steam and check the Library status again.
Steam’s current Deck interface can change, so a particular button name or menu location is not universal. A cleared warning or synchronized status indicates the retry completed. If Steam presents a conflict instead, stop and use the next fix.

Fix 6: Resolve a Cloud conflict without guessing
A conflict means Steam found different local and cloud versions. It cannot know which contains the progress you want. Choosing the wrong side can overwrite the newer save, and Steam Support may not be able to restore lost Cloud data.
- Do not launch the game. First identify which device you last played on and where the desired progress should be.
- Compare the local and cloud timestamps Steam displays with your actual play history. A timestamp is a clue, not proof: a game can write files on launch, during autosaves, after settings changes, or when it exits.
- If possible, back up the local save before choosing. If you are unsure which version is right, stop rather than selecting one at random.
- Select the local or cloud version that matches the progress you intend to keep.
- Wait for synchronization to finish before starting the game.
Steam describes the conflict process and warns about lost progress in its Cloud FAQ.

If ordinary fixes fail, the Cloud activity log can help identify repeated upload or download errors. This is an advanced diagnostic step; don’t delete the log, save folders, or Steam’s user data.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode and open the file manager.
- Show hidden files if needed, then navigate to
~/.local/share/Steam/logs/. - Open
cloud_log.txtin a text editor and look for recent errors associated with the affected game’s App ID. - If you contact support, include the game name, App ID, Deck model, SteamOS/client version, networks tested, and relevant error lines.
Steam’s Linux Cloud data is also stored under ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/[Steam ID]/[App ID]/. These paths are useful for diagnosis, not an invitation to remove files. The locations are documented in the Steam Cloud FAQ. For a persistent Cloud issue, use Steam’s Cloud support route; for a title-specific save format or cross-platform issue, contact the game’s developer or publisher.
When the problem is the game, not the Deck
- No Steam Cloud feature listed: Steam may not be managing that game’s saves. Check the developer’s instructions for transferring or backing up local saves.
- Only one game fails: The title may exclude the relevant files, have an incomplete Cloud setup, or handle saves differently across Windows and SteamOS.
- Windows and SteamOS saves disagree: A game running through Proton can use a different save path or produce files the Windows build does not recognize. This depends on the game; it is not a universal Deck limitation.
- Mods or alternate launchers are involved: They can change files or affect how the game exits. Test after closing third-party tools, and avoid overwriting a known-good save.
- Failure persists across games and networks: Check Steam’s service status and the network restrictions in use, then provide the Cloud log details to Steam Support.
- The save is missing everywhere: Check the old device and the game’s own save location before concluding it is gone. If it was never uploaded or the game does not use Steam Cloud, Steam may not have a copy to restore.
Moving a game between internal storage and a microSD card does not, by itself, determine whether Steam Cloud works. Cloud behavior depends on the game’s configuration and the files Steam synchronizes.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Don’t choose a conflict option solely because its timestamp looks newer; compare it with when you actually played and saved.
- Don’t delete
userdata, save folders, or Cloud logs as a routine repair. - Don’t factory-reset or reinstall SteamOS for a single Cloud warning. Valve’s recovery options are for broader system problems and can erase data, depending on the option selected.
