Verified means Valve has tested a game against Steam Deck compatibility requirements and expects it to work well without extra setup. Playable means the game can work, but you may need a manual adjustment such as changing a controller layout or using a mouse or touchscreen in a launcher. Neither badge rates the game’s story, graphics, review score, or overall quality on PC.
The distinction is mainly about friction at startup and during normal use. Read the compatibility details on the game’s Steam Store page before buying, because those notes identify the specific requirement a Playable or Unsupported title does not currently meet.

The four Steam Deck compatibility badges
Valve’s Steam Deck program groups games into four labels. They describe compatibility with the Deck’s hardware and SteamOS software, not whether a game is worth playing.
| Badge | Valve’s meaning | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box. | Install, launch and play with the Deck controls and expected display settings without a required workaround. |
| Playable | The game may require some manual tweaking by the user. | The game can be usable, but you might need to change a control layout, use the touchscreen or mouse, or complete another small setup step. |
| Unsupported | The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck. | Valve currently considers the title non-functional. The status can change if the game, SteamOS or Proton changes. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. | There is no official Deck test result to rely on; the label is not an endorsement or a failure notice. |
A badge is therefore a setup and compatibility signal. It is not a universal performance score, a review, or a promise that every player will have an identical experience.

What Valve checks before awarding Verified
Valve’s Verified requirements are organized into four areas. A title that misses one of these checks can receive Playable even when the game itself is otherwise enjoyable.
Input and controls
The game must provide full controller support appropriate to the Deck. On-screen prompts should use controller icons rather than forcing you to translate keyboard keys, and the on-screen keyboard should appear automatically when text entry is required. This matters for character names, chat, search boxes and account forms: a game can launch correctly yet fail the Verified standard if text entry requires an external keyboard or an awkward workaround.
Display and readability
Verified games support the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolutions, use sensible default settings and present text that is legible on the built-in screen. A game may be technically playable at a different setting but still fall short if menus are too small, the default resolution is wrong or important interface elements are difficult to read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSeamless launching
Valve looks for a start-to-finish experience without compatibility warnings and with controller navigation in any launcher. If a publisher’s launcher appears before the game and cannot be operated from the controls, the title may be Playable because you must touch the screen or move a cursor with the trackpad.
System and middleware support
The game and its middleware must work through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS. This check also includes anti-cheat support when the title uses Proton. A game can perform well in a test session and still miss Verified if its anti-cheat system, launcher component or other middleware is incompatible.

Why a game can be Playable and still be a good choice
Playable is not a synonym for “runs badly.” Valve’s own examples include changing a controller configuration or using a mouse or touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Those are inconveniences, not proof that the game will stutter, crash or look poor once you are playing.
Think of Playable as a warning about required effort. Before purchasing, open the game’s Steam Store page and find the Steam Deck Compatibility section. The details explain which Verified requirements are not currently met. A note about a launcher is a very different proposition from a note about a game that cannot display readable text or lacks working anti-cheat.

- Higher-friction Playable: repeated mouse use, keyboard dependence, awkward prompts or a launcher that interrupts every start.
- Changing Playable: a title waiting for a Proton, game or anti-cheat update; its behavior may improve or regress as components change.
The badge alone cannot tell you which case applies. The Store’s compatibility note is the decision-making information.
Verified versus Playable: the practical differences
| Decision area | Verified | Playable |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Designed for no required manual configuration before normal play. | At least one manual adjustment or workaround may be required. |
| Controller use | Full controller support, correct button prompts and automatic on-screen keyboard behavior where needed. | Controller support may be incomplete, require a different layout or be supplemented by mouse, touch or keyboard input. |
| Launcher behavior | Any launcher can be navigated with the Deck controls and does not produce a compatibility warning. | A launcher may require touchscreen or mouse navigation. |
| Display defaults | Supports 1280×800 or 1280×720, sensible defaults and legible text. | One or more display or readability expectations may need adjustment. |
| Proton and middleware | Required Proton components and supported anti-cheat behavior meet the program’s checks. | A Proton, middleware or anti-cheat requirement may need a workaround or may be the reason for the lower rating. |
| Risk of changed behavior | The rating is still a snapshot and can change after updates. | The rating is a snapshot and the required workaround can change as updates arrive. |
Verified is the better filter when you want a console-like experience. Playable is reasonable when you are comfortable following a short setup instruction and the Store note makes the limitation acceptable.
How to check a game’s badge before you buy
- Open the game’s Steam Store page. Find the Steam Deck Compatibility section rather than relying on a search-result icon or an old screenshot.
- Read the detailed note. Valve identifies which Verified requirement is not met for a Playable or Unsupported title. Record whether the issue concerns controls, text entry, display, a launcher, Proton or anti-cheat.
- Match the issue to your play style. A one-time touchscreen tap may be harmless if you play at home; a keyboard-dependent strategy game may be unsuitable if you play handheld without accessories.
- Check the date and recent updates. Valve describes ratings as a changing snapshot. A game update, a Proton fix or new anti-cheat support can alter the result.
- Decide how much troubleshooting you will tolerate. Choose Verified for the least friction. Choose Playable when the stated workaround is clear and acceptable. Treat Unsupported as a current non-functional warning and Unknown as an untested title.
This process is more reliable than assuming every game with the same badge behaves identically. The reason behind a badge is often more important than the badge itself.

Does Playable mean the game runs poorly?
No. Playable describes a compatibility or setup exception, not a measured frame rate or visual-quality tier. A Playable game might run smoothly after a controller change, while another could involve more intrusive keyboard or launcher work. Valve’s badge does not publish a performance percentage, universal frame-rate target or graphics-quality score.
Performance also depends on the game’s updates, your graphics settings, resolution, frame-rate limit and Proton version. If performance is your primary concern, use the game’s settings and current community or developer information in addition to the badge. Do not infer smoothness from Verified alone, and do not reject every Playable game without reading its specific note.
What Unsupported and Unknown mean
Unsupported
Unsupported means Valve currently considers the game non-functional on Steam Deck. That can result from a broken launch path, incompatible middleware, anti-cheat behavior, a display problem or another failure in the compatibility checks. It is a current status, not a permanent prediction: Valve says ratings can change as developers update games and as Proton and SteamOS gain functionality.
If you already own an Unsupported game, check its Store details after major game or SteamOS updates. Do not treat a workaround found for one release as a guaranteed solution for the next, and do not buy on the assumption that an unverified fix will work for you.
Unknown
Unknown means Valve has not checked the title for compatibility. It supplies less information than either a positive or negative result. Unknown is not “probably Verified,” and it is not evidence that the game fails; it is simply an absence of an official test result.

Why Steam Deck ratings change
Valve explicitly calls compatibility ratings a snapshot. Developers can add controller support or anti-cheat support, while Valve can fix Proton bugs or add functionality. Those changes can move a title between categories without any change to the Deck hardware.
Valve gave a concrete example in its March 4, 2022 Deck Verified update: if a game shows controller glyphs 99 percent of the time but occasionally instructs the player to “press F,” it is classified as Playable rather than Verified. The example shows how a small but recurring input inconsistency can matter to the badge even when most of the game works.
Because the rating is time-sensitive, use the live Store compatibility details when making a purchase. An old compatibility list, review video or screenshot may describe an earlier version of the game, Proton or anti-cheat system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do LCD and OLED Decks use different badge meanings?
No. Valve says titles tested in the Deck Verified program retain their ratings on both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Verified therefore has the same compatibility meaning on both versions, as does Playable, Unsupported and Unknown.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That shared rating does not make every performance result identical. Individual games can respond differently to updates, settings and other system changes, but the badge is not split into an LCD test and an OLED test.

Why Proton matters to the badges
SteamOS is Linux-based, and many Windows games run through Proton rather than a native Linux build. Proton translates the game’s expected Windows interfaces so they can work with SteamOS. Valve uses the Verified program to identify titles that do not run well on SteamOS and to communicate the remaining setup work.
Proton support is not limited to the game executable. Middleware, launchers and anti-cheat systems can determine whether the complete title works. That is why a game that appears simple to launch on a desktop PC may receive Playable or Unsupported on Deck: its surrounding services may not support the Linux-and-Proton environment in the same way.
A decision framework for buying Deck games
Choose Verified when convenience is the priority
Verified is the appropriate target if you want to suspend the Deck, resume a game and use the built-in controls without learning a workaround. It minimizes the chance of a surprise launcher, keyboard prompt or unreadable menu during ordinary use.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Playable when the limitation is acceptable
Playable can be a sensible purchase when the Store note describes a small, understandable action and the rest of the experience fits your needs. Examples include selecting a controller configuration once or touching a launcher during startup. Read the exact requirement first; “Playable” by itself does not reveal how often the workaround occurs.
Pause on Unsupported
Unsupported is a warning to wait unless you have a specific, current reason to believe the status has changed. Valve’s classification says the title is currently not functional, so buying it for immediate Deck play carries a substantial compatibility risk.
Investigate Unknown
Unknown is a prompt to seek current, title-specific information rather than making assumptions. Since Valve has not tested the game, the official badge cannot answer whether your controls, launcher or anti-cheat system will work.
Common Playable problems and the appropriate response
- The game asks for keyboard keys. Read the Store note to see whether the issue is occasional prompts or broad keyboard dependence. A remapped layout may solve the former; the latter can undermine handheld play.
- A launcher opens without controller navigation. Use the touchscreen or a mouse if that is the stated workaround, then check whether the launcher appears on every start or only during first-time setup.
- Text entry does not summon the on-screen keyboard. Expect to invoke another input method or attach a keyboard. This is specifically part of Valve’s input criteria, so it can explain a Playable rating.
- Anti-cheat prevents online play. A game may launch while a required online mode remains unavailable. Check whether the compatibility note identifies anti-cheat and whether a later developer or Proton update has addressed it.
- The badge changed after an update. Re-read the current Store details. Ratings can move in either direction as games, SteamOS, Proton and middleware evolve.
Storage does not affect a compatibility badge
The Steam Deck includes a high-speed microSD card slot, which can be useful for installing a large library or moving games between internal and removable storage. Storage capacity does not change a game’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown status. A game remains subject to the same input, display, launcher and system checks regardless of where its files are installed.
The bottom line on Verified versus Playable
Verified is Valve’s out-of-the-box compatibility target. Playable means the game can work but may require a manual configuration step, mouse or touchscreen input, or another workaround. Read the Store’s detailed compatibility note, not just the color or icon, and remember that every badge is a changing snapshot. The same meanings apply on LCD and OLED Decks, while the quality of the game itself remains a separate question from its compatibility label.
