If a Steam demo will not launch, work through Steam’s own sequence: restart Steam and the computer, install operating-system and graphics-driver updates, verify the demo’s files, close non-essential background software, and compare your computer with the demo’s store-page requirements. Those checks address the common causes of a missing executable, an immediate crash, and platform or compatibility errors without changing advanced settings prematurely.
The exact message determines the next branch. “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” points first to a quarantined, blocked, incompletely downloaded, or corrupted file. “Game is not available on your current platform” indicates that the operating system is unsupported. On Linux or Steam Deck, you must also determine whether the demo has a native Linux build or is a Windows game being run through Steam Play Proton.

Start with the five-minute launch check
Before changing launch options or reinstalling anything, establish whether Steam itself or one demo is at fault. Exit Steam completely rather than merely closing its window, start it again, and reboot the computer. Then install any pending updates for Windows, macOS, or Linux and update the graphics driver. Steam lists these as baseline launch checks because an outdated operating system, driver, or Steam session can prevent a new build from starting.

- Restart Steam and then restart the computer.
- Apply pending operating-system updates.
- Install the current graphics-driver update offered for your hardware.
- Read the demo’s store page and compare its operating-system and hardware requirements with your machine.
If the demo still fails, note the exact wording of the error before trying another fix. A missing-file message, an immediate crash, and an unsupported-platform message require different checks.

Verify the demo’s files in Steam
Steam’s file-integrity tool checks the installed demo against the files Steam expects and replaces files that are missing or damaged. Steam says the process can take several minutes, so let it reach completion even if the progress appears to pause.
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Right-click the demo, or open its gear menu, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification and any replacement download to finish, then try the demo again.
A verification report can mention that one or more local configuration files failed verification. Steam notes that this can be normal: settings files created on your computer may differ from the distributed copy and are not necessarily evidence that the playable files are broken. Do not delete those files solely because they appear in the report.
If Steam downloads replacements, allow the download to finish before launching. Starting the demo while the repair is incomplete can reproduce the same error and make it harder to tell whether verification worked.

Steam describes this message as appearing when a game file is missing or being blocked by another program. For a demo, the usual branches are security software, a failed download, or corruption in the installed files.

Check antivirus quarantine and blocking
Open the security software’s quarantine or detection history and look for a file associated with the demo. If the software removed or blocked it, restore or allow the file only when you trust the demo and obtained it through the legitimate Steam listing. A false-positive exception that is too broad can expose the rest of your computer, so use the narrowest file or folder exclusion your security product permits.
After restoring or allowing a file, return to Steam and run Verify integrity of game files again. Verification ensures that the restored file is the version Steam expects and replaces anything that is still incomplete. If the security product immediately quarantines it again, record the detection name and contact the demo developer or your security vendor rather than repeatedly disabling protection.
Rule out an incomplete or corrupt download
A failed download can leave Steam with the launcher or executable absent even though the demo appears in your Library. Verification is the least destructive repair because it redownloads only what Steam identifies as missing or damaged. If verification reports a repair, wait for the download to finish, restart Steam, and test once more.

1. Complete updates before changing settings
Install the operating-system and graphics-driver updates described in the first-pass check, then restart. A driver update that has downloaded but not been applied does not count; reboot when the installer requests it.
2. Verify files
Run the Installed Files verification procedure. If Steam reports a local configuration file that cannot be verified, treat that specific notice as expected unless the demo’s executable or other content is also repaired.
3. Close non-essential software
Temporarily close overlays, monitoring tools, capture utilities, and other non-essential background applications. Steam’s guidance is to disable non-essential software while testing because an overlay or hook can interfere with a game process before its window appears. Test with only Steam and the demo running; restore applications one at a time after a successful launch to identify a conflict.
4. Compare requirements realistically
Open the demo’s store page and compare its listed operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and other requirements with your computer. Steam cautions that a machine at or just below minimum requirements may still fail to launch. Meeting a minimum line is not a guarantee that every driver, integrated graphics configuration, or background workload will behave correctly, so treat a borderline system as a compatibility risk rather than proof that the files are defective.

Understand platform and compatibility errors
The message Game is not available on your current platform has a specific meaning in Steam Support: the game is not supported on the operating system you are currently using. Check the demo’s store-page operating-system requirements and confirm that your installed edition matches them. A Windows demo will not become a native macOS or Linux application merely because it appears in your Library.
Hardware requirements matter alongside the operating system. If your machine is below, or only just at, the listed minimum, launch failures can occur even after a successful verification. Record your operating system version and hardware details when seeking help; those details let the developer distinguish an unsupported platform from a file problem.
Linux and Steam Deck: native build or Proton?
Linux users, including Steam Deck users, need to identify how Steam is running the demo. A demo with a native Linux build uses that build directly. A Windows demo running through Steam Play Proton uses a compatibility layer, so a failure can be specific to Proton rather than to the demo’s files or to Linux generally.

Steam recommends current Linux software and drivers, file verification, and disabling interfering applications for Linux launch problems. If the general checks succeed for other games but this demo still fails under Proton, treat it as a game-specific compatibility case. If many unrelated games fail, investigate the system, driver, or Steam installation rather than assuming every title has the same Proton defect.

Use the installed executable to reveal a more precise error
When one third-party demo is affected and Steam’s normal launch button gives only a generic failure, start the executable from the demo’s installation folder. In a standard Steam library, look under SteamApps/Common/<Game Title>. The exact folder name follows the title installed on your computer.
Launching directly can expose a missing runtime, a permission message, a graphics initialization error, or another detail that Steam’s overlay hides. Do not treat a new message as permission to download random replacement DLLs or executables; capture the wording and use it when contacting the developer. If security software blocks the direct launch, return to its quarantine history rather than weakening protection indiscriminately.
Choose self-service or escalation
Self-service is appropriate when a restart, updates, verification, and conflict isolation produce a new result or repair the installation. Escalation is warranted when the same failure survives those checks, when the title appears unsupported on your operating system, or when security software repeatedly blocks a trusted file.

A support request is more actionable when it includes the exact message and the steps already completed. Take an uncropped screenshot of the error so the title, wording, and any code remain visible. Include your operating system, hardware information, whether the demo is native Linux or running through Proton, and the result of file verification. Steam Support specifically recommends an uncropped error screenshot and a system report for unresolved launch problems.
For a third-party title, send the same evidence to the developer through the support channel listed on its Steam page. Mention whether launching the executable directly produced a different message and whether disabling overlays or security software changed the behavior. If you are not comfortable collecting a system report or interpreting a driver error, a local PC technician can perform that diagnosis without relying on guesses.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Reinstalling before checking quarantine: security software can remove the newly installed executable again, making every reinstall look corrupt.
- Stopping verification early: the process can take several minutes, and an interrupted repair leaves the original problem in place.
