Check the individual game’s description.
How the three labels differ

Steam describes Demos as free, and Playtests cannot be sold or monetized through in-game transactions. A developer who is ready to charge for a work-in-progress game should use Early Access instead, according to Steam’s Playtest guidance.

What you can do with a Demo
A Demo is aimed at players deciding whether to buy the full game. Steam describes it as a small playable portion that gives players a chance to experience the game’s core mechanics. The precise levels, modes, save behavior, and other content are determined by the developer, not by the Demo label.
Demos have their own App ID linked to the full game. They may be surfaced on the main game’s page, and developers may choose to create a separate Demo store page; that separate page is not guaranteed. Steam’s Demos guide also says Steam does not currently support multiplayer matchmaking between a full game and its Demo. Do not assume Demo players can join owners of the full game in multiplayer.

What makes a Playtest different
A Playtest is a testing channel, not simply another name for a Demo. The developer uses it to gather feedback, can decide how many players to allow, and can turn it off. Players request access through the main game’s store page; the developer may gate access, so a request is not a promise of entry.
Steam keeps Playtest participation separate from several parts of the main game’s record: a Playtest participant cannot review the actual game, and Playtest activity does not affect that game’s wishlist, refund policy, trading cards, or achievements. The Playtest does not have its own unique store page. Steam describes the feature as a free, low-risk way for developers to collect playtesting data without relying on Steam keys or putting the main game’s reviews and wishlists at risk; see Steam Playtest.

A Playtest is not confidential by default: Steam says players are not under NDAs. If a developer wants testers to keep details private, the Playtest label alone does not create that obligation.
Why “Prologue” needs a closer look
“Prologue” is not enough information to infer how much content a game includes, whether it is connected to a full release, or whether access will remain available. Steam’s Playtest documentation mentions free “Prologue” games as an approach developers have used, but does not define a Prologue feature or promise a particular kind of preview. Read the specific listing and description rather than assuming it works like a Demo or Playtest.

How to decide what you are looking at
- Check the stated purpose. Is the listing offering a sample to help you decide about a purchase, or asking for participation in a test? “Prologue” by itself does not answer that.
- Check what is playable. Look for the included levels, modes, and content in the game’s description; the label does not establish those details.
- Check access expectations. A Playtest may be gated and can be deactivated by its developer. A request to join is not guaranteed admission.
- Check the store arrangement. A Demo may have an optional separate page, while a Playtest signup is on the main game page and the Playtest has no unique store page.
- For multiplayer, verify compatibility. Steam says Demo-to-full-game matchmaking is not currently supported, so do not count on playing together across those versions.
