For a commercial PC game with a playable core loop, Steam Early Access is usually the stronger primary storefront. It combines a public release state with wishlists, launch notifications, reviews, community tools and several built-in discovery surfaces. itch.io is usually the better choice when control matters more than platform reach—especially for prototypes, experimental games, free or pay-what-you-want releases, bundles, crowdfunding and unusual access models.
Neither platform guarantees sales. Your choice should follow the game’s maturity, audience, monetization plan and willingness to operate a store with platform rules.

Steam Early Access and itch.io at a glance
The two services solve different launch problems. Steam Early Access is a defined public status inside a large commercial PC storefront. itch.io is a flexible publishing platform where the creator controls more of the business model and is generally responsible for bringing traffic.
| Decision factor | Steam Early Access | itch.io |
|---|---|---|
| Entry cost | Steam Direct requires a non-refundable app fee. Valve says the fee becomes recoupable after the app reaches $1,000 in Adjusted Gross Revenue. | There is no mandatory fixed platform cut. The seller chooses itch.io’s share, while payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other charges still reduce proceeds. |
| Revenue control | The cited Steam material does not state a current standard revenue percentage; check the commercial agreement for your account and territory. | Open revenue sharing lets the seller set the itch.io share to 10%, 30% or 0%, among other choices. |
| Pricing options | Standard store pricing, discounts and launch mechanics, including a 20% discount threshold for certain wishlist notification emails. | Free minimum price, pay-what-you-want pricing, pre-orders, bundles, crowdfunding and early-access content. |
| Discovery and launch | Early Access new-release placement and possible New and Trending, top-seller and tag exposure, plus wishlist notifications and Steam events. | Highly configurable creator pages and distribution. The cited official material establishes no comparable audience-size or algorithmic-reach figure. |
| Feedback and trust | Public reviews are labeled as Early Access until full release. Steam’s refund policy applies regardless of Early Access status. | Early-access content is supported, but the cited material does not define one platform-wide review and refund regime equivalent to Steam’s. |
| Best fit | A game ready for public play, review, wishlist building and regular updates. | Experimental, free, pay-what-you-want, bundle, crowdfunding or highly creator-controlled releases. |
What Steam Early Access actually gives an indie developer
A public release state, not a private beta
Steam Early Access is a store release state. Customers can buy and play the game through Steam while development continues, and the store page must communicate that the game is unfinished. That distinction matters: you are selling a public product, not merely handing test keys to a closed group.

A sensible candidate has a complete enough core loop that an outside player can understand the game, reach meaningful goals and report useful problems. “Playable” does not mean feature-complete, but it does mean that crashes, missing saves, broken progression or an absent tutorial cannot be the normal first-run experience. The more the game depends on future promises rather than current play, the greater the risk of refunds and negative reviews.
Refunds still apply
Valve’s support wording is explicit: “Regardless of a game’s Early Access status, the Steam Refund Policy will still apply should you choose to request one.” Early Access does not create a separate no-refund category. Set expectations on the store page, but do not promise customers that buying unfinished software removes their normal refund rights.
Refunds also affect planning. A launch spike can produce support requests, payment reversals and review activity before the team has a stable routine. Keep a known-good build available, document save compatibility and assign someone to monitor crash reports and entitlement problems during the first days.

Reviews are public and labeled
Steam customers can publish reviews during Early Access. Steam labels those reviews as Early Access until the game reaches full release, so readers can distinguish feedback on the in-development version from feedback on the finished product. That label is useful context, not protection from criticism: the review score and written comments still shape the store page’s first impression.
Ask for accurate feedback rather than positive ratings. A clear roadmap, patch notes and visible responses to bug reports give reviewers evidence that the project is being maintained. Conversely, launching with a thin build and long silence can turn the first review cohort into a permanent warning to later visitors.
Wishlists create notification opportunities
Steamworks documentation says that when a game releases in Early Access or full release, wishlisted users may receive an email and/or mobile push notification. A 20% discount threshold is specified for wishlist notification emails in the current wishlist documentation. Treat wishlists as an opt-in launch audience: they are valuable because they can be notified, not because every wishlist automatically converts into a sale.
Wishlists are also not a simple ranking lever. Valve states that wishlists are “not a factor” in algorithmic visibility in most cases, while still describing them as important for notifications. Build wishlists with a compelling store page and a visible announcement plan, but do not assume that collecting a number of wishlists guarantees a placement or a sales rank.

Several visibility surfaces can help, but none is guaranteed
An Early Access launch can appear in new-release areas and may qualify for New and Trending, top-seller or tag-based exposure. Eligibility and placement depend on Steam’s systems and customer response. Valve’s marketing overview cites 1 trillion impressions per day; that is a vendor marketing claim, not an independent estimate of the reachable audience for your game.
Steam’s own visibility guidance emphasizes response signals. Click-through, purchases, play activity, retention and customer satisfaction matter more than a developer simply being present on the store. A polished capsule image, accurate tags, a short trailer and a build that rewards the first session improve the odds that exposure turns into sustained interest.
Community and update infrastructure
Steam provides a familiar place for announcements, discussions, reviews and user updates. That reduces the amount of infrastructure a small team must assemble before launch. It also creates an obligation to communicate: customers expect patch notes, answers to common problems and a clear way to report issues.
Early Access works best when updates have a cadence you can keep. A smaller patch every week or two is often easier for a community to understand than a large promise followed by months of silence. State what changed, what remains broken and what is being investigated. Do not label a feature “coming soon” unless the team can explain its development status.

What itch.io gives an indie developer
Control over the platform share
itch.io describes its model as open revenue sharing: “Since March 2015, itch.io has an open revenue sharing model.” The seller chooses the platform share, with the service specifically explaining that you can “Set it to 10%, 30%, or even 0%.” A 0% itch.io share does not mean a sale is cost-free. Payment-provider charges, taxes, VAT and other deductions still apply.
This control is useful when a project is funded by patrons, grants or direct community support, or when the creator wants every possible dollar to remain in the project. It also places more responsibility on the seller to understand payment settlement, tax treatment, refunds and customer support.
Flexible pricing and access models
itch.io supports a free minimum price, so a page can be free or pay-what-you-want. You can also use pre-orders, bundles, crowdfunding and early-access content. Those options make it possible to test demand without forcing every project into a conventional fixed-price launch.

Pay-what-you-want can lower the barrier for a small experimental game and allow supporters to pay more than the minimum. It can also make revenue unpredictable, especially when the game needs substantial ongoing server, moderation or content costs. State the minimum, suggested price and what buyers receive so that generosity does not become confusion.

itch.io pages can host early-access content, but the cited official material does not define one platform-wide review and refund system equivalent to Steam’s Early Access rules. Before publishing, write your own access and support terms: what build buyers receive, how often it will be updated, whether old versions remain downloadable and how you will handle a refund request.
This flexibility suits prototypes, game-jam follow-ups, niche simulations and community-funded projects. It also means the creator must explain more. A visitor should not have to infer whether a download is a demo, an unfinished commercial build, a backer reward or a near-final release.
Creator-controlled pages and audience building
itch.io gives you control over page presentation, files, pricing and distribution. That is valuable when your existing audience is on a mailing list, Discord server, video channel or crowdfunding campaign. The platform can host the transaction and download, but you should plan to drive initial traffic yourself.
The cited itch.io material does not establish a comparable audience-size or algorithmic-reach figure to Steam’s visibility documentation. Do not budget on an automatic discovery wave. Your launch plan should include a playable demo, press or creator outreach, community posts and a way to measure where visitors came from.

Steam’s upfront fee and recoupment rule
Steam Direct charges a non-refundable app fee. Valve’s current documentation says the fee is recoupable after the app reaches $1,000 in Adjusted Gross Revenue. “Recoupable” is not the same as refundable on submission: you pay it to enter the process, and recovery depends on the app generating the specified revenue.
Include that cash requirement in the launch budget alongside development, localization, trailers, customer support and any middleware or server costs. The cited sources here do not state a current standard Steam revenue percentage, so do not use an assumed split in a forecast; verify the commercial terms for your account and the territories in which you sell.

itch.io’s share plus payment costs
On itch.io, your selected platform share is only one line in the calculation. The seller’s proceeds are reduced by that share plus payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other charges. itch.io’s payment guidance gives a general example of $0.30 plus 2.9% as a payment-provider fee. The example is a fee illustration, not a promise that every payment, country or processor will use exactly those terms.
For a low-priced game, the fixed $0.30 component can consume a large portion of a single transaction. Bundles and higher suggested prices may reduce the relative impact, while free downloads avoid a sale transaction but do not fund ongoing support. Build a spreadsheet with your actual price, selected itch.io share, processor, tax treatment and expected refund rate before choosing a minimum price.
Discounts, bundles and consistency
Steam’s discount and launch tools can create urgency and trigger eligible wishlist notifications. itch.io’s bundles and flexible minimum price can create a different kind of event, especially when several creators coordinate a collection or when a crowdfunding campaign includes digital rewards.
If you sell on both stores, decide whether the same edition has the same base price. Regional pricing, taxes, payment fees, keys and bonus files can make identical sticker prices produce different net revenue. Explain any difference instead of leaving customers to discover that one store includes a soundtrack, mod tools or an older build that the other does not.
Discovery: what each platform can and cannot do
Steam is infrastructure, not a sales guarantee
Steam supplies more launch infrastructure: store events, notifications, public reviews, community tools and several possible visibility surfaces. These features can reduce the amount of audience-building work a small team must do independently.
They do not guarantee sales. Valve’s visibility documentation says exposure depends on customer-response signals. A game that receives impressions but loses visitors on its capsule art, trailer or first session may receive less sustained exposure than a smaller game with stronger engagement. Treat every placement as an opportunity to convert interest, not as a forecast.
itch.io rewards control and direct outreach
itch.io is a strong home base when you already know how to reach players or when the project benefits from unusual pricing. Its flexibility makes it easier to run a free prototype, a pay-what-you-want campaign, a creator bundle or a crowdfunded reward program.

The trade-off is discoverability work. Prepare a page that explains the build, hardware requirements, controls, known issues and update plan. Give communities a reason to share it, and track which posts, streams or campaigns lead to downloads and paid support.

Choose Steam Early Access when these statements are true
- The core loop is already playable by strangers, not just by the development team.
- You want a conventional paid PC launch with wishlists, launch notifications and public reviews.
- You can support customers who exercise Steam’s refund policy.
- You are prepared to maintain a store page, community discussions and regular updates.
- You want to participate in Steam events and accept the platform’s submission and commercial rules.
Choose itch.io when these statements are true
- You need to set the platform share yourself, including the option to set it to 0%.
- Your project is experimental, niche, prototype-driven or still being shaped with a community.
- Free, pay-what-you-want, bundles, crowdfunding or pre-orders are central to the plan.
- You already have an audience or a credible plan to drive traffic directly.
- You want control over files, page presentation, rewards and access without adopting a single storefront release state.
Use both only with an explicit operating plan
Publishing on both can widen access, but it doubles operational questions. Decide which store is primary, whether customers receive keys for the other store, how save files and updates work, and where support requests should be sent.
Check price consistency before launch. Document which edition includes multiplayer access, bonus files, soundtrack downloads or mod tools. If a player buys on itch.io and later asks for a Steam key, define that policy before support volume makes an improvised answer look unfair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep-by-step Steam Early Access launch plan
- Validate the build. Give the current version to people unfamiliar with the project. Fix blockers in installation, controls, saving, progression and first-session clarity before opening sales.
- Prepare the commercial page. Write an honest Early Access description, list known limitations, show current gameplay in the trailer and use tags that describe the actual audience.
- Budget for Steam Direct. Pay the non-refundable app fee and model when $1,000 in Adjusted Gross Revenue would recoup it under Valve’s rule.
- Build the wishlist audience. Publish the page early enough for players to understand the game and wishlist it. Plan the launch price and any discount with the 20% wishlist-email threshold in mind.
- Set support ownership. Assign responsibility for refunds, crash reports, account or entitlement issues, moderation and community announcements during launch week.
- Launch a supportable version. Open Early Access only when the build delivers the advertised loop. Explain exactly what is available now rather than selling a roadmap alone.
- Read the feedback correctly. Monitor labeled Early Access reviews, discussions, crash data and retention. Fix high-impact problems first and publish patch notes that connect changes to player reports.
- Define the exit criteria. Tell customers what “full release” means for your project—feature scope, stability, content or progression—and communicate changes to that definition early.
Step-by-step itch.io launch plan
- Choose the access model. Decide whether the page is free, pay-what-you-want, fixed-price, pre-order, crowdfunding-supported or early-access content. Put the answer in the first screen of the page.
- Set the itch.io share. Select the platform percentage deliberately, including 0% if that matches your funding plan. Then calculate payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other deductions.
- Package the files. Upload tested builds for each supported operating system, label versions clearly and state storage, hardware, controller and online-service requirements.
- Explain unfinished work. List what is playable today, what is planned, the update rhythm and whether buyers keep access to earlier versions.
- Configure rewards and bundles. If crowdfunding, pre-orders or a bundle is involved, spell out delivery dates, included files and any reward that is not available immediately.
- Bring the first audience. Coordinate your mailing list, community channels, demo events and creator outreach. Use distinct links or campaign codes where possible so you can identify effective sources.
- Handle payments and support. Monitor failed transactions, download problems, refund requests and questions about updates. Publish a concise support route on the page.
- Update in public. Keep the page’s current build number and changelog accurate. If a promised feature is cancelled or delayed, change the page rather than leaving an outdated promise in place.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Launching before the core loop is ready
Early Access is not a substitute for testing. If players cannot tell what to do, lose progress or encounter a crash in the first hour, later content will not repair the first impression. Delay the public build, narrow the advertised scope or run a smaller private test.
Treating wishlists as guaranteed sales
Wishlists can trigger notifications, but Valve says they are not a factor in algorithmic visibility in most cases. Use the list to reach interested players at launch, then improve conversion with accurate assets, a stable build and a clear offer.
Assuming a 0% itch.io share means 0% fees
A zero platform share still leaves payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other charges. Recalculate net revenue at your actual price, especially for inexpensive games where fixed transaction costs matter.
Promising a roadmap instead of describing a product
Players buy what they can play now. Put the current content, limitations and update cadence above the long-term vision. A roadmap should clarify direction, not conceal an empty build.
Ignoring the two-store support burden
Separate stores can mean separate builds, keys, entitlements, save locations, refund paths and bug reports. Create a support matrix before launch and state where each customer should request help.
A practical decision in one sentence
Pick Steam Early Access when you have a publicly playable commercial game and want integrated launch infrastructure, notifications, reviews and store discovery; pick itch.io when pricing freedom, direct audience ownership and experimental or community-funded access matter more than built-in reach.
