Steam Families puts game sharing and parental controls in one place

Steam Families combines game sharing and parental controls for up to six household members—but eligible games, copy counts, DLC, and one-year cooldowns matter.

Steam Families combines Steam’s former Family Sharing and Family View systems. It lets up to six household members use their own Steam accounts to access eligible games from the family library, while adult members can manage a child’s game access, playtime, Steam features, and purchase requests.

The important limitation is licensing: one copy of a game supports only one simultaneous player. Multiple family members can play the same title at once only when the family owns multiple copies. Steam Families is therefore a useful household-management feature—not an unlimited game-sharing plan for friends.

What is Steam Families?

Steam Families is a free Steam account feature that brings game sharing and parental controls into one family-management area. It became available to all Steam users on September 11, 2024, after a beta period. Steam’s client update announced the general release.

It replaces both Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View. A family can use the system to:

Valve describes Steam Families as being intended for a household of up to six close family members. It is not a subscription, family-priced game catalogue, or general-purpose library pool for unrelated friends.

For the current rules and eligibility details, see Steam’s official Steam Families FAQ.

What you get from Steam Families

Game sharing Parental controls
Access to eligible games owned by other family members Restrict which games a child can play
Separate saves and achievements for every account Set playtime limits by day and time
Different family members can play different games simultaneously Review playtime reports
Multiple copies allow simultaneous play of the same game Restrict Store, Community, Chat, and Friends features
Offline play for games that support Family Sharing Approve purchases and extra-playtime requests

These are separate concepts. Access means Steam may allow a member to launch an eligible game. Ownership remains with the account that purchased the game. Concurrent use depends on how many compatible copies the family owns.

Who can join?

A Steam Family can contain up to six members in total. Each member is assigned one of two functional roles:

  • Adult: can manage invitations and apply parental restrictions.
  • Child: is subject to parental controls and cannot manage the family independently.

“Adult” and “Child” are Steam roles, not a statement that Valve has verified someone’s legal age. Use the Child role for an account that should be restricted. Adding an account as an Adult does not make that account subject to the child-control system.

Valve’s stated intention is a household of close family members. Steam may use account activity to determine whether members appear to belong to the same household, and Valve says participation requirements can change. A family invitation is not guaranteed to work simply because the invited account is on your friends list.

How to create a Steam Family

The current official setup route is:

  1. Open the Steam Store.
  2. Open Account Details.
  3. Select Family Management.
  4. Choose Create a Family.
  5. Enter a family name.
  6. Select Invite a Member.
  7. Choose or search for the Steam account.
  8. Assign the member as Adult or Child.

Steam’s labels can vary slightly by client language, platform, or future updates, but Account Details → Family Management is the relevant starting point.

Set up parental controls

For a child, create or use a separate Steam account rather than sharing an adult’s login. That keeps saves, achievements, purchases, and restrictions tied to the correct person.

  1. Add the child’s account as a friend of the Adult account.
  2. Add the account to the Steam Family.
  3. Go to Account Settings → Family Management → Manage.
  4. Expand the child’s entry.
  5. Enable Parental controls.
  6. Configure game access, Steam feature access, and playtime limits.

Steam Families does not transfer progress between accounts. If you create a new child account, it will not inherit another account’s saves, achievements, or other progress; Valve says that progress cannot be transferred to the new account.

How game sharing works

After joining a family, members can see eligible games owned by other members in Steam’s library. Each person plays through their own account, so shared access does not merge identities or progress:

  • Saves remain separate.
  • Achievements are earned separately.
  • Purchases remain tied to the account that made them.
  • Workshop access and other game-specific features may be available where supported.
  • Offline play is possible only for games that support Family Sharing.

A game appearing in a family library does not guarantee that every member can launch it. Sharing depends on the game’s licensing, publisher settings, region, operating-system support, external-account requirements, and whether another member is already using every available copy.

The copy-count rule: one copy does not mean two simultaneous players

Family members can play different games at the same time, including games drawn from the same member’s library. The restriction applies when people want to play the same game simultaneously.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

For example:

  • A family has one copy of Portal 2: one family member can use that copy at a time.
  • A family has two family-owned copies of Portal 2: two members can play simultaneously.
  • Four members can still play four different eligible games at once, subject to each title’s restrictions.

If all compatible copies are in use, another member must wait or buy another copy. Steam Families does not let one purchase become several simultaneous licences.

This is more flexible than the old Family Sharing model, but it does not give the purchaser automatic priority. Valve’s current FAQ describes availability in terms of copies in use and compatible alternatives; it does not promise that the original purchaser can instantly displace another player.

Multiple copies, DLC, and save compatibility

If several family members own the same game, Steam may ask which member’s copy should be used and remember that choice. You can change the selected copy later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DLC makes this more complicated:

  • A player receives DLC belonging to the family member’s copy when the publisher has marked that DLC as shareable.
  • If another identical copy with the same DLC is available, Steam may use it.
  • If only a copy with different DLC is available, Steam may offer it anyway.
  • A save may not work correctly when switching between copies with different DLC configurations.

For example, suppose one family member owns a base game and another owns the base game with an expansion. A save created with the expansion may behave differently when opened using the base-only copy. Check which family member’s licence is active before troubleshooting a save that appears to have lost content.

Parental controls in practice

Adult members can manage a Child account’s:

  • Game access.
  • Steam Store access.
  • Community access.
  • Chat and Friends features.
  • Daily or scheduled playtime.
  • Playtime reports.
  • Requests for additional playtime.
  • Requests to use restricted Steam features.
  • Purchase requests.

Adults can manage the family from the Steam client, a mobile device, or a web browser. Game permissions and Steam social or store permissions are distinct: allowing a game does not necessarily mean allowing unrestricted Community, Chat, Friends, or Store access.

How child purchase requests work

A Child account can put a game in a shopping cart and send a purchase request to an Adult. The Adult can approve and pay through a mobile device or email. Once approved, the game is added directly to the Child’s account rather than becoming an Adult’s purchase.

Which games cannot be shared?

Steam’s official FAQ lists several reasons that a game or DLC may be unavailable to family members:

  • The title requires an additional third-party key, account, or subscription.
  • The game is free-to-play, including purchased DLC for that free-to-play game.
  • A regional restriction applies to one of the members.
  • The title does not support the other member’s operating system.
  • The publisher has explicitly opted out of sharing.
  • The original owner marked the game private.
  • The title was already excluded from the former Family Sharing system.

Games involving EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, or other external accounts are common problem cases, but publisher policies vary by title and can change. The authoritative test is the game’s current Steam sharing eligibility, not its publisher name.

Steam Families’ parental controls also do not automatically govern activity inside a third-party launcher, external account, subscription service, or game-specific social system. Those services may have their own age, privacy, and parental settings.

Important warnings before inviting anyone

Do not treat it as a casual friends’ sharing group

Steam Families is designed around a household of close family members. Adding a temporary roommate, distant friend, or someone who may soon leave creates practical risk, especially because of the cooldown rules.

Leaving can trigger a one-year cooldown

An Adult can leave a Steam Family, but after leaving they must wait one year from joining the previous family before joining or creating another Steam Family. A family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it.

A Child cannot leave independently; an Adult or Steam Support must remove the account. Steam displays the remaining cooldown when an account cannot join. Do not invite someone casually assuming that you can immediately replace them later.

Cheating or fraud can affect the licence owner

Valve warns that if a family member cheats or commits fraud while playing a game from another member, Steam Family privileges may be revoked and the account associated with the game licence may receive a VAC ban. Invite only people you trust, and never share passwords. Each person should sign in to their own Steam account.

Family View settings migrate

If a family is created and a Child account is added, existing Family View settings associated with that account transfer into Steam Families’ Parental Controls. The former Family View PIN is removed while the settings otherwise remain unchanged.

Former Family Sharing users may see Steam recommend creating a Steam Family and inviting accounts previously used for sharing.

Is Steam Families right for your household?

It is a good fit when:

  • Several people in one household use separate Steam accounts.
  • Most of the household’s desired games are shareable.
  • Members mostly play different games or single-player titles.
  • Parents want game, feature, time, and purchase controls together.
  • Everyone needs separate saves and achievements.

Buy separate copies or use another solution when:

  • Unrelated friends in different households are the intended users.
  • Everyone wants to play the same game simultaneously and there is only one copy.
  • The library depends heavily on third-party launchers, accounts, or subscriptions.
  • Members use operating systems that the relevant games do not all support.
  • The group needs to change members frequently.
  • A parent needs controls that cover activity outside Steam or inside third-party launchers.

For a household that regularly wants to play the same multiplayer game together, buying enough copies is the reliable solution. Steam Families can make those copies easier to share among household accounts, but it does not remove the requirement for a separate simultaneous licence.

Troubleshooting Steam Families

A member cannot join

  1. Check whether Steam considers the account activity consistent with the same household.
  2. Check whether the account is still subject to the one-year cooldown from its previous family.
  3. Check whether the intended family slot is cooling down from a previous occupant.
  4. Read the cooldown message in Steam; it should show how much time remains.

If the issue does not match those conditions, use Steam’s Family Support page.

A game is missing or locked

Check these possibilities in order:

  1. The title may not support Family Sharing.
  2. It may require a third-party account, key, or subscription.
  3. It may be free-to-play or contain excluded DLC.
  4. A regional restriction may apply.
  5. The member’s operating system may not be supported.
  6. The owner may have marked the game private.
  7. Another family member may be using every available copy.

The wrong copy launches

If several family members own the title, select the desired owner’s copy when Steam offers the choice. Steam remembers the selection. Be careful when switching to a copy with different DLC, because the save may depend on content that is not present in the newly selected licence.

A child can access too much or too little

Verify all of the following:

  • The account is assigned the Child role.
  • Parental controls are enabled.
  • The game is allowed in the child’s game-access list.
  • Steam Store, Community, Chat, and Friends permissions are configured separately.
  • Playtime limits cover the intended days and times.

The bottom line

Steam Families is a substantial improvement for households using separate Steam accounts. It combines eligible game sharing with useful controls for games, time, Steam features, and purchases, while preserving each person’s saves and achievements.

Its limits are just as important as its benefits: not every game is shareable, one copy cannot support multiple simultaneous players of the same title, DLC can affect saves, and changing members can trigger one-year cooldowns. Set it up for a genuine household, use Child accounts for children, invite only trusted people, and buy additional copies when everyone needs to play the same game together.
