Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes, you can use a laptop as a PS4 display—but usually not by connecting the console directly to the laptop’s HDMI port. Most laptop HDMI ports are outputs, not inputs. For a practical setup, use PS Remote Play for the cheapest solution, a USB HDMI capture card for recording or streaming, or a separate monitor for the lowest latency.
Can you connect a PS4 directly to a laptop with HDMI?
Usually, no. HDMI ports have a direction:
- HDMI output sends video from a laptop to a television or monitor.
- HDMI input receives video from a PS4, camera, or another source.
Most laptops have HDMI output only, so an ordinary HDMI cable cannot make the laptop function as a PS4 monitor. A USB-to-HDMI display adapter generally does not solve this either: most are designed to add another display output, not capture incoming HDMI video.

Check your exact laptop model in the manufacturer’s specifications or service manual. Look specifically for HDMI In and documentation describing console or external-video input. A port simply labeled “HDMI” should not be assumed to accept a signal.
USB-C is not automatically an alternative. It may support charging, data, or display output, but a normal USB-C-to-HDMI cable normally sends video out of the laptop. For video input, you need a USB capture device.

Choose the right method
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PS Remote Play | Free, temporary, casual gaming | Network-dependent delay and compression |
| USB HDMI capture card | Recording, streaming, and HDMI-based setups | Hardware cost and software-preview latency |
| Direct monitor or TV | Competitive games and the simplest experience | Requires another display |
Method 1: Use PS Remote Play
PS Remote Play streams the PS4’s screen to an application on your Windows laptop or Mac. It does not use the laptop’s HDMI port and requires no capture card.
Requirements
Sony’s current requirements include:
- Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11; or macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, or Tahoe.
- On Windows, a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 2 GB of RAM, 100 MB of storage, and a 1024×768-or-higher display.
- On Mac, at least 2 GB of RAM.
- A sound card, USB port, compatible controller, current PS4 system software, and a PlayStation account shared by the laptop and console.
- A high-speed internet connection. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and 15 Mbps or more for better performance.
Those network figures are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular resolution, frame rate, or latency. A wired connection is preferable. Strong Wi-Fi can work, but congestion, router quality, distance, and other network traffic affect the result.
Configure the PS4
- On the PS4, open Settings → Remote Play Connection Settings.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Open Settings → Account Management → Activate as Your Primary PS4, then choose Activate.
If you want to wake the console from Rest Mode, go to Settings → Power Save Settings → Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.

Only one PS4 can be activated as the primary PS4 for an account. This can prevent Remote Play from working if the account is associated with another console.
Connect from the laptop
- Download and install the official PS Remote Play application.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to the laptop with a USB cable. Sony also lists DualSense and DualSense Edge support, but the DUALSHOCK 4 is the natural controller for a PS4.
- Open PS Remote Play and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Select PS4 and allow the application to search for the console.
- Adjust the available video-quality settings if the stream is unstable.
The PS4 screen should appear in the Remote Play window. Test the connection near the console before trying to connect over the internet. If automatic discovery fails, the application can request manual registration; follow Sony’s current on-screen instructions.

Improve Remote Play performance
- Use Ethernet for the laptop or PS4 where possible.
- Reduce competing downloads, streaming, and cloud synchronization.
- Move the laptop closer to the Wi-Fi router if Ethernet is unavailable.
- Lower Remote Play’s resolution or frame-rate setting when the image stutters.
- Use a USB-connected controller first, especially when troubleshooting.
Remote Play is a streamed session, not a direct HDMI feed. Image compression and input delay can vary. It is convenient for menus, turn-based games, RPGs, and casual play, but it is less suitable for rhythm games, fighting games, competitive shooters, and other timing-sensitive titles.
Method 2: Use a USB HDMI capture card
A capture card supplies the laptop with the HDMI input it normally lacks. The basic signal path is:
PS4 HDMI OUT → Capture card HDMI IN → USB → Laptop
For a card with passthrough, you can also connect:
PS4 HDMI OUT → Capture card HDMI IN
Capture card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor
Capture card USB → Laptop
Passthrough lets you play on a directly connected display while the laptop records or streams. The laptop’s software preview may still be delayed, so passthrough is the better screen for latency-sensitive games.
What you need
- A PS4 or PS4 Pro.
- An HDMI cable from the PS4 to the capture card.
- A USB capture card with an explicitly labeled HDMI input.
- A USB cable and compatible capture software.
- Optionally, a second HDMI cable and TV or monitor for passthrough.
Confirm the capture card’s operating-system, USB, resolution, and frame-rate requirements. A cheap device may advertise high resolutions but still produce dropped frames, audio sync problems, or unreliable 1080p60 capture.
Set up the PS4 and capture card
- Temporarily connect the PS4 directly to a TV or monitor.
- Open Settings → System and turn Enable HDCP off.
- Connect the PS4’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the capture card directly to a suitable USB port on the laptop.
- Open the manufacturer’s application or install OBS Studio.
- Add the card as a Video Capture Device.
- Select the capture device’s audio input if game sound is not detected automatically.
- Start with 1080p at 60 frames per second, if supported by the card and laptop.
HDCP is content protection. Elgato’s PS4 capture instructions identify enabled HDCP as a cause of flashing or black screens. Disabling it is relevant to gameplay capture; it is not a method for capturing protected movies or streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu. Those services remain protected.

- Choose Add → Video Capture Device.
- Select the USB capture card.
- Set the desired resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm that the audio meter responds.
- If necessary, set the capture device’s audio mode manually.
- Maximize the preview or use Full Screen Projector if the laptop is your only display.
OBS is useful for viewing, recording, and streaming, but it does not remove software-preview latency. For the most responsive experience, play through the capture card’s HDMI passthrough on a directly connected monitor.

Troubleshooting
Remote Play says “No PS4 found”
- Confirm that the console is on, or correctly configured for Rest Mode.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled.
- Verify that the laptop and PS4 use the same PlayStation account.
- Confirm that the PS4 is activated as the account’s primary console.
- Update PS4 system software and the Remote Play application.
- Test locally near the console before trying an internet connection.
- Check router and firewall settings if the application is being blocked.
The capture-card preview is black
- Connect the PS4 directly to a display and turn off Enable HDCP.
- Restart the PS4.
- Verify that the cable is connected to the card’s HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT.
- Check that the capture card has power and a suitable USB connection.
- Close other applications that may be using the device.
- Select the capture card manually in OBS or the manufacturer software.
- Set the PS4 to a common output such as 1080p.
- Try another HDMI cable.
Turning off HDCP addresses one common cause, not every black-screen problem.
There is no audio
- Confirm that PS4 audio is routed over HDMI.
- Enable the capture card’s audio source in OBS.
- Check that the source and laptop playback device are not muted.
- Set the card to HDMI audio rather than analog audio, if that option exists.
- Check whether a PS4 headset is routing all sound away from HDMI.
Game audio, microphone audio, and party chat can use different paths. Recording your own voice and PlayStation party audio may require additional routing or a compatible chat solution.
The video stutters or drops frames
- For Remote Play, switch to Ethernet or improve the Wi-Fi connection.
- For capture, connect the device directly to a USB 3.x port instead of a congested hub.
- Reduce capture resolution or frame rate to 1080p60 or 720p60.
- Lower OBS output settings and close unnecessary applications.
- Use HDMI passthrough for gameplay rather than relying on the preview.
The controller does not respond
With Remote Play, connect the controller by USB first. Wireless pairing behavior varies by operating system. With a capture-card setup, the controller still communicates directly with the PS4; the capture card carries video and audio, not controller input.
PS4 Pro and other edge cases
A PS4 Pro can output higher resolutions in supported games and with compatible displays, but that does not mean the laptop workflow will preserve 4K. Remote Play, the capture card, the laptop screen, and viewing software may each impose separate limits. Check the selected capture mode and display specifications rather than assuming PS4 Pro output will appear as 4K.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
A laptop with genuine HDMI input is an exception. Confirm the exact model and whether it requires a special input mode. HDMI input may still have resolution, HDCP, or refresh-rate limitations.
An external monitor connected to the laptop does not automatically become a PS4 display. It only expands or mirrors the laptop’s desktop; the PS4 must still reach the laptop through Remote Play or a capture device.
Remote Play outside the home can work, but performance depends on upload speed where the PS4 is located, download speed at the laptop, latency, NAT behavior, router configuration, and general internet stability.
Which option should you choose?
- Want the cheapest solution? Start with PS Remote Play.
- Want to record or stream? Use a USB HDMI capture card with OBS.
- Need the most responsive experience? Use a monitor or TV connected directly to the PS4.
- Have unstable Wi-Fi? Prefer a capture card or direct display.
- Own a PS4 Pro? Check the actual resolution limits of every part of the chain.
- Already own a capture card? Use passthrough for gameplay and the laptop preview for recording or stream control.
Elgato’s HD60 X remains a PS4-compatible example with HDMI input, passthrough, and OBS support, but its official page now marks it discontinued and identifies Game Capture 4K S as its successor. Treat remaining HD60 X stock and any listed price as availability-dependent rather than a universal current recommendation. Existing owners and used-market buyers can still find it useful; new buyers should compare current models and verify their specifications.

Is a separate monitor a better purchase?
Often, yes. If you are buying a capture card solely to play games, compare its total cost with an entry-level monitor or borrowed TV. A direct display avoids Remote Play’s network variability and the delay that can appear in a capture-card preview. It is especially sensible for competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games, and any title where timing matters.
For a temporary setup, however, Remote Play is the sensible first test: it costs nothing beyond the hardware and network you already have. Move to a capture card when you need recording, streaming, passthrough, or a more controllable HDMI workflow.
