The system replaced Steam Family Sharing and Family View with one set of tools for sharing eligible games, managing child accounts, setting playtime limits, and approving purchases. It is now an established Steam feature—not a new August 2026 rollout.
Steam Families is designed for households of close family members. It supports up to six people, but it is not an unlimited library-sharing loophole for friends or a guarantee that every game and DLC item will be shareable.

What Steam Families changed
Steam Families combines two older systems: Steam Family Sharing, which handled game access, and Steam Family View, which restricted Steam features and content.
The feature entered the Steam Beta Client on March 18, 2024, before its full launch on September 11, 2024. A Steam Family can contain one user plus up to five other members. Members have either the adult or child role.

How game sharing works
When accounts join a Steam Family, eligible games owned by members appear in a shared family library. Purchases remain attached to the account that bought them; joining a family does not transfer ownership.
Each person still plays through their own Steam account, keeping separate saves, achievements, profiles, and personal progress. Players can generally use their own Workshop content as well.

There is one crucial limit: one copy of a game supports only one family member at a time. Family members can play different shared games simultaneously, but two people who want to play the same title at once generally need two owned copies. For example, one copy of Portal 2 supports one player at a time; two copies support two simultaneous players.
Not every game participates. Developers can exclude games from Family Sharing for technical, licensing, or gameplay-economy reasons, and eligibility can change. Some DLC, currencies, subscriptions, and one-time-use items may also behave differently from the base game. Check the game’s Steam store information or the family library rather than assuming an entire library will transfer. See Valve’s Steamworks documentation for the developer-side limitations.

Parental controls for child accounts
Adults manage restrictions for members designated as children. Available controls include:
- Allowing or blocking particular games.
- Restricting the Steam Store, Community features, and Friends Chat.
- Setting daily or hourly playtime limits.
- Reviewing playtime reports.
- Approving or denying requests for extra playtime.
- Approving temporary or permanent access to restricted features.
- Recovering a child’s account if the child loses its password.
These controls are not applied in the same way to adult members. A child also cannot leave a Steam Family independently; an adult or Steam Support must remove the account.

How to create or manage a Steam Family
- Open Steam’s Store page.
- Open Account Details.
- Select Family Management.
- Create a Steam Family, invite members, or manage roles and restrictions.
Valve says Steam Families can be managed through the Steam Client, a mobile device, or a web browser. Steam’s labels may change over time, so the current menu names may not exactly match older screenshots.
Valve also says existing Family View settings associated with a child account transfer into Steam Families’ parental controls. That describes the intended migration, not necessarily an identical interface or configuration.
The important catches
- Six-member maximum: A family can contain up to six accounts.
- One-year cooldown: An adult who leaves must wait one year from joining the previous family before joining or creating another. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before another member can occupy it.
- Membership affects access: An adult can remove a member, and a shared game may disappear if its owner leaves, membership ends, or the developer changes the game’s sharing eligibility.
- Duplicate copies may be necessary: Different games can be played at the same time, but the same game generally requires multiple copies.
- Developer opt-outs matter: Some games and content will not appear as shareable.
The cooldown is especially important for temporary roommates, friends, or groups that may soon reorganize. It is not a ban, but it can make an impulsive membership change difficult to undo.

Which households should use it?
| Situation | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Parents and children using separate Steam accounts | Good | Separate progress plus centralized restrictions and purchase approvals. |
| Household members with different game libraries | Good | Eligible games become available across the family, subject to the one-copy rule. |
| Two people who often play the same game together | Mixed | They may need to buy two copies. |
| Distant friends or a frequently changing group | Poor | Valve describes the feature as household-oriented, and the cooldown limits flexibility. |
| A library dominated by excluded games or account-bound DLC | Mixed | Sharing depends on each game and entitlement. |
Steam Families: the practical verdict
Steam Families is a substantial improvement for a stable household that wants separate accounts, shared access to eligible games, and meaningful parental controls. Its biggest limitations are just as important: it does not make one copy support simultaneous play by two people, it does not share every game or DLC item, and its one-year membership cooldown makes casual experimentation risky.
For a parent managing children’s Steam accounts, the playtime controls and purchase-request workflow are the strongest additions. For friends looking to rotate access to a library, Steam Families is the wrong tool—and may create account-management problems later.
