There is an important distinction: Microsoft ended general Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Steam may continue to run while the operating system no longer receives ordinary security and feature updates. Individual games also have their own hardware and Windows requirements.
Can you install Steam on Windows 10?
Steam’s current position is specific:
- Windows 10 64-bit: The Steam client continues to run.
- Windows 10 32-bit: Valve ended Steam-client support on January 1, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
- Windows 8.1 and older: Do not treat them as supported Steam-client targets.

A compatible client does not guarantee that every game will run. Each store page lists its own processor, memory, graphics, DirectX, operating-system and storage requirements.

Download Steam for Windows 10 safely
- Open https://store.steampowered.com/about/.
- Select Install Steam.
- Save the Windows installer, normally named
SteamSetup.exe.
Valve’s installer target is https://cdn.fastly.steamstatic.com/client/installer/SteamSetup.exe. The Steam client itself is free; games, downloadable content, subscriptions and in-game purchases may cost money.
Avoid “cracked” Steam downloads, search advertisements that imitate Valve, third-party download portals and installers bundled with download managers or browser extensions. Never enter your password or Steam Guard code on a look-alike login page.
Check whether Windows 10 is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Find System type and look for 64-bit operating system.
Windows 10 builds can place the item slightly differently. If you do not see it, search Windows Settings for System type. If the result says 32-bit, reinstalling Steam is not a solution to the support cutoff; the practical path is a supported 64-bit Windows installation, Windows 11 if the hardware qualifies, or a newer PC.

Install Steam on Windows 10
Before you start
- Confirm that Windows 10 is 64-bit.
- Use an account with administrator permission.
- Have a stable internet connection.
- Choose a drive with enough free space for Steam and your games. There is no single universal storage figure for all games.
- Keep Windows Security or another reputable security product enabled.
Installation steps
- Open the downloaded
SteamSetup.exefrom your browser’s Downloads folder. - Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Choose the installer language.
- Select the destination folder. A local internal drive is generally the most reliable choice; avoid protected Windows system folders.
- Allow setup to finish.
- Launch Steam from the Start menu, desktop shortcut or installation folder.
- Let Steam download any client update before installing a game.
- Sign in to an existing account or choose the account-creation option.
- Complete email verification or Steam Guard authentication when requested.
Screen labels can change between Steam releases, but the functions remain the same. On first launch, Steam may update itself; that is normal and does not mean you need another installer.

Sign in or create a Steam account
Use your existing account whenever possible. Creating a second account can separate your purchases, friends and cloud data. Most games require an account to purchase and manage them, although some free experiences have different access rules.
- Steam Guard or a mobile authenticator may require access to your account email or phone.
- Never share a password, recovery code or Steam Guard code.
- A Steam account is separate from your Microsoft account, even when both are used on the same PC.
- Sign out on shared computers.
Install your first Steam game
- Open Steam and sign in.
- Use the Store search field to find a title.
- Open its store page and read the Windows system requirements.
- Purchase or claim the game if required.
- Select Install or Add to Library, depending on the title and account status.
- Choose an existing Steam library or create one on another drive.
- Confirm the download and wait for installation to complete.
- Select Play.
Steam’s own requirements and a game’s requirements are separate. A PC can run the client but fail to run a game because its graphics hardware, RAM, processor, DirectX support or available storage is insufficient.

Steam for Windows 10 troubleshooting

| Installer will not open | Delete the incomplete file and download again from Valve’s official page. Confirm the filename is SteamSetup.exe, check Windows Security’s protection history, and try Run as administrator if your account permits it. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. |
| Steam is running but no window appears | Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End a clearly stuck Steam process, then relaunch. Restart Windows if the process immediately reappears or remains locked. |

Should you upgrade from Windows 10?
Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Ordinary users no longer receive normal security updates, feature updates or technical support, although specific Extended Security Updates (ESU) arrangements may apply by region, device and eligibility. If your PC is eligible, Microsoft says a Windows 10 22H2 system can upgrade to Windows 11 without paying for the upgrade, subject to Windows 11 hardware requirements. Back up important files before upgrading. ESU is a temporary, eligibility-dependent security option—not a requirement for installing Steam.

GOG (gog.com), Epic Games Store (store.epicgames.com) and Xbox PC Game Pass (xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass/pc-game-pass) are separate options. Catalogs, launchers, account rules, saves, mods, refunds and multiplayer support differ by title, so they are not substitutes for the Steam installation path when a game is sold through Steam.

Will uninstalling Steam delete my games?
It can remove locally installed game files depending on the uninstall process and library location. Check your library folders and back up saves before removing the client.
The Bottom Line
For a Windows 10 64-bit PC, download SteamSetup.exe from Valve, install it, sign in and check each game’s requirements. Steam remains usable, but Windows 10 itself is out of general Microsoft support, making an eligible Windows 11 upgrade the safer long-term setup.
