If you want wireless Steam PC VR on a headset you can use now, start with Valve’s Steam Link app on a specifically supported Meta Quest, PICO, or HTC consumer headset. For flat-screen play on a TV, phone, tablet, or another computer, Steam Link is also a straightforward option; Sunshine with Moonlight is a broader PC-to-device alternative. None of these routes is a feature-for-feature replacement for Steam Frame, and the available official specifications do not establish a performance winner.
Which Steam Frame alternative fits your setup?
| Your priority | Route to consider | Check before setting it up |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless PC VR with a headset you already own | Steam Link VR | Exact headset model, SteamVR and PC requirements, and Valve’s network guidance |
| Play Steam games on a TV, phone, or tablet | Steam Link / Remote Play | Whether the destination supports the client and whether your game and controller setup suit it |
| Stream from a PC to a range of devices using another software path | Sunshine host with Moonlight client | Supported host and client platforms, setup comfort, and whether you need VR |
| Use an NVIDIA SHIELD you already own | NVIDIA GameStream | Current support status, device availability, and the stated GeForce GTX or RTX host requirement |
| Get a headset designed for streaming plus standalone play | Steam Frame | Valve’s listed hardware features and current product availability |
This is a support-based decision guide, not a tested ranking. The cited official product and support pages do not provide a controlled comparison of latency, image quality, or reliability.
Steam Link VR: the direct option for supported headsets
Valve says Steam Link VR streams from a PC running Steam and SteamVR. Its Steam Remote Play page lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Valve’s headset support FAQ also names PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO Neo 3, HTC Vive Focus Vision, and HTC Vive XR Elite. Compatibility is model-specific; the FAQ does not establish support for every headset made by those brands, and it excludes business headset support for the consumer models described.
Network and host requirements
- Valve’s published Steam Link VR guidance specifies a 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 network in its listed minimum requirements.
- Valve recommends connecting the PC to the router with a wired connection.
- These are setup requirements and recommendations, not a promise of a particular frame rate, latency, or visual quality.
Valve announced Steam Link VR availability for the named PICO and HTC models on September 25, 2025, describing basic streaming functionality in that announcement. Check the current FAQ for the latest model list rather than assuming support extends to newer or related devices.

Steam Link for flat-screen play
If you do not need a VR headset, Steam Link can stream your Steam library from a computer to supported phones, tablets, televisions, computers, and Raspberry Pi devices. The client sends input back to the host PC, so the experience depends on the destination device and how you want to control the game. See Valve’s Steam Remote Play compatibility information and Steam Link hardware guidance.
Sunshine and Moonlight: a broader software route
Moonlight is an open-source streaming client that lists support across desktop, mobile, television, and other platforms. Its FAQ identifies Sunshine as a host option. This can suit someone looking for a PC-to-device streaming path beyond Steam Link, but the cited Moonlight material does not establish Steam Frame-like VR feature parity or comparative latency results. Check the current host and client platform lists before choosing it.

NVIDIA GameStream and SHIELD
NVIDIA’s GameStream User Guide describes access to games on a GeForce GTX or RTX PC from a SHIELD TV or SHIELD Tablet, and advertises support up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS. Those are NVIDIA’s published capability statements, not independent test results. Moonlight’s project page says NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience and SHIELD streaming feature are being discontinued, so GameStream is best treated as a legacy route for an existing SHIELD setup rather than the default choice for a new installation. Check NVIDIA’s current guidance and device availability first.
What Steam Frame adds beyond streaming apps
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first wireless VR headset that can also run standalone games using SteamOS. Its product page lists 2160×2160 LCD panels per eye, supported refresh rates of 72–144Hz, Wi-Fi 7, and an included Wi-Fi 6E adapter for a direct PC link. These are Valve’s product specifications and claims, not independent measurements. An existing headset running Steam Link, or a flat-screen client, does not thereby gain Steam Frame’s listed hardware or standalone-play features. See Valve’s Steam Frame product page for its current description.

How to choose without guessing about performance
- Need PC VR? First check whether your exact headset model is on Valve’s Steam Link VR support list, then confirm the PC and network can meet the published requirements.
- Only want to play away from your PC screen? Check Steam Link support for the TV, phone, tablet, or computer you plan to use; a headset is not necessary for flat-screen streaming.
- Prefer another host/client configuration? Compare Sunshine and Moonlight’s current platform support with the devices you own and the amount of setup you are comfortable handling.
- Already have SHIELD hardware? Verify that NVIDIA’s current support guidance still fits your host and client before relying on GameStream.
- Want streaming-oriented VR hardware and standalone SteamOS play? Compare Steam Frame’s own stated features rather than treating a software client on another device as equivalent.
Official support lists can establish which devices a vendor says are supported, but they do not answer which route performs best in a particular home network. The sources here do not contain comparable independent tests, so claims that one option is faster, sharper, lower-latency, or more reliable would go beyond the published evidence.
