Use the reported Steam Frame STEP files as your design starting point, but do not treat them as a fit guarantee. A recent Hackaday report dated October 10, 2026 says Valve’s SteamHardware repository contains STEP references for the Steam Frame core module, head strap, and controllers. The report also describes documented controller infrared-LED locations and a front expansion port exposing MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces.
That makes CAD a better first step than estimating dimensions from photographs. It does not establish manufacturing tolerances, part-to-part variation, strap behavior, comfort, retention, electrical limits, or a successful print. A maker can design intelligently from the models, then still needs the actual headset and controllers for clearance checks and prototype validation.

What the reported Steam Frame CAD release contains
The available information comes from Hackaday’s October 10, 2026 report about Valve’s SteamHardware SteamFrame GitLab repository. According to that report, the repository includes STEP-format models for three useful groups of hardware:
- The Steam Frame core module.
- The head strap.
- The controllers.
The same report says the documentation identifies controller infrared-tracking LED locations. It also describes a front expansion port carrying high-speed MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces, with port documentation and simple reference designs in KiCad and Altium.

Those are meaningful maker-facing references. A STEP model can provide nominal surfaces, mounting geometry, openings, and relative positions in a way that photographs cannot. It can let you begin a case, bracket, cable guide, face interface, or controller accessory in CAD rather than reconstructing every dimension from perspective-distorted images.
However, the repository and group pages returned an access-denied response when checked for this article. The files, revision history, license, dimensional detail, and file-specific cautions were therefore not independently inspected. Treat the component list and interface descriptions as reported information, and verify the current repository contents before manufacturing or connecting hardware.
CAD reference is not the same as a fit specification
A STEP file normally describes nominal geometry. It does not, by itself, say how much a molded shell can vary, how a foam pad compresses, how a strap flexes under load, or how much clearance a printer should leave for a particular process. The available report gives no tolerance figures, dimensional-accuracy test, fit study, or maker success rate.

That distinction matters because a part can match the CAD surfaces and still fail in use. An attachment may collide with a hidden screw boss, pinch a cable during assembly, press into a lens surround, shift when the head strap bends, or fit one controller but not another. A rigid enclosure can also be geometrically correct while being uncomfortable or impossible to install without disassembling the headset.
The safest interpretation is: the models define a useful design intent for the represented parts, while your physical unit defines the final fit and behavior.
CAD versus measuring the headset
| Decision factor | Reported STEP reference | Physical measurement and fit check | What a maker should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid surfaces represented in the model | Strong starting geometry for the core module, strap, and controllers | Confirms the individual unit and catches unmodeled details | Model first, then verify the prototype against the hardware |
| Flexible or padded parts | Nominal shape may not describe compression or movement | Shows deflection, pressure points, and strap adjustment | Measure and test the assembled, worn configuration |
| Controller tracking LEDs | Locations are reportedly documented | Confirms that an attachment does not block or shade emitters | Use the documented keep-out concept, then inspect the real controller |
| Expansion-port projects | Reported MIPI camera and PCI Express interface information and reference designs | Confirms connector access, cable routing, and mechanical strain relief | Read the current port documentation before fabricating or powering anything |
| Manufacturing tolerance | Not stated in the available report | Can reveal variation only on the unit you have | Do not publish a universal clearance or fit claim without evidence |
| Prototype confidence | Better than scaling a photograph | Required to establish fit, retention, comfort, and durability | Use both methods for any part that must attach reliably |
What makers can reasonably design first
Rigid core-module attachments
Brackets, covers, cable guides, mounting plates, and other rigid accessories are the clearest use for the reported core-module STEP model. Start by importing the model into your CAD package, identifying surfaces that are actually exposed after assembly, and building your accessory around those surfaces. Keep the design parametric so that a small measured correction can be applied without remodeling the entire part.

Do not assume that every visible face in a STEP file is available for clamping. A face may be part of an assembly interface, hidden by a shell, needed for cooling, or unreachable once the strap and electronics are installed. Check how your proposed attachment is installed and removed, not just whether it overlaps the digital model.
Cases and transport accessories
A carrying case is a good example of where CAD saves time but cannot finish the job. The model can establish the envelope and help position dividers, controller wells, and cable channels. The physical headset is still needed to check padding compression, zipper or lid interference, insertion direction, and whether the assembled strap occupies more volume than its nominal CAD pose.
For a soft case, the fabric, foam, and sewing pattern introduce variables that a rigid STEP surface does not capture. Prototype the interior with inexpensive spacers or adjustable dividers before committing to a final pattern. For a rigid printed case, test the actual closure, hinge, latch, and impact points; geometric contact alone does not prove that the case will protect the headset.
Controller accessories
The reported controller models can support grips, charging stands, protective shells, and storage inserts. Controller tracking is the critical constraint. The report says infrared LED locations are documented so that custom geometry can avoid occluding them. Build those locations into your design review as explicit keep-out regions rather than treating them as decorative details.
Leave visibility around every reported emitter location and inspect the controller from the directions in which it is tracked. A wall that looks clear in a top view can still block an emitter at an oblique angle. Also check buttons, triggers, battery or charging access, wrist-strap attachment points, and the hand’s natural movement. The CAD reference does not establish how much clearance is comfortable or how an accessory affects tracking in a particular room.
Head-strap-mounted parts
The head strap is not a rigid bracket. Its shape changes with adjustment, head size, padding compression, and the direction of load. A clip that fits the strap in a relaxed CAD pose may slide when worn, twist the strap, create a pressure point, or prevent normal adjustment.

Use the strap model to locate broad attachment zones and to avoid obvious collisions. Then test the design at the shortest and longest useful strap settings, with the headset worn, and during head movement. If the part depends on friction, verify retention after repeated installation and removal. A single static measurement cannot establish that behavior.
A reliable CAD-to-prototype workflow
- Check the current repository. Confirm that the SteamHardware SteamFrame repository is reachable, identify the latest revision, read its license, and inspect any README, assembly notes, warnings, or interface drawings. The reported contents are not a substitute for those current files.
- Confirm which component is modeled. Separate the core module, head strap, and controller references in your CAD project. Do not use a controller model to infer a headset surface, or assume that an accessory shown in a render is part of the released geometry.
- Preserve units and coordinate systems. Import the STEP file without automatic scaling, verify the unit system with a known dimension from the documentation, and keep the original reference body untouched. Create a separate design body for your accessory.
- Map real attachment surfaces. Mark faces, edges, openings, and adjustment paths that are accessible on the assembled product. Identify surfaces that are only visible because the CAD assembly is exploded or partially hidden.
- Build adjustable geometry. Use variables for offsets, wall thickness, clamp width, and mounting-hole positions. The report provides no universal tolerance, so an adjustable model is more useful than a fixed claim about an exact fit.
- Apply functional keep-outs. Reserve space for controller infrared emitters, cameras, buttons, triggers, vents, moving strap sections, lens areas, and cable exits. Use the reported LED locations and expansion-port description as checks, not as permission to cover neighboring areas.
- Review installation and service. Simulate the order in which the accessory is fitted, removed, charged, cleaned, and stored. A part that requires force against a lens housing or blocks a connector is not validated by an interference-free static view.
- Make a low-cost test piece. Print or fabricate only the contact regions first. Use that piece to check orientation, reach, edge pressure, and assembly access before producing a cosmetic or load-bearing version.
- Test the assembled unit. Check the specific headset and controllers you intend to use. Record any measured correction, then update the parametric model rather than silently scaling the final mesh.
- Validate use, not just fit. Wear the headset, move your head, operate controls, inspect tracking, connect cables, and repeat installation. For a case, test insertion and removal repeatedly; for a controller grip, test all buttons and tracking views.
- Document the design basis. Record the repository revision, the physical unit tested, the changes made after measurement, and any unverified assumptions. This prevents a later revision of the CAD from being mistaken for the version you tested.
When physical measurements are essential
Physical measurements are most important where the released model may not describe the condition your part experiences. Measure or directly fit-check when any of the following applies:
- The attachment touches foam, fabric, rubber, a flexible strap, or a spring-loaded component.
- The part must pass around a seam, screw head, cable, latch, or other detail not clearly represented in the reference.
- The design depends on a press fit, friction fit, snap, clamp, or elastic preload.
- The accessory affects comfort, eye position, weight distribution, or the ability to adjust the strap.
- A controller accessory could obstruct an infrared emitter, button, trigger, charging contact, or wrist strap.
- A case must protect the assembled headset rather than merely contain its nominal envelope.
- A cable or board will connect to the front expansion port.
- You are producing parts for more than one headset or controller and need to understand unit variation.
Digital calipers are optional verification tools, not a required first step. The reported CAD availability means you do not need to begin by measuring every visible dimension. Use calipers or another suitable gauge to check a prototype, investigate a mismatch, or capture an unmodeled feature. Do not turn one measurement from one unit into a universal tolerance.

Controller infrared emitters are functional surfaces. A shell, grip, decorative panel, or storage insert can reduce line of sight even when it does not physically touch an LED. The reported documentation of LED locations gives you a way to identify risk earlier in CAD.
Make optical clearance a three-dimensional review. Rotate the controller, view it from likely tracking directions, and look for walls, lips, translucent materials, and recessed cavities that could shade an emitter. If your design changes the controller’s orientation in a stand or case, review the stand as part of the optical system. A part that is safe while held may be unsafe when docked.
The available report does not provide a measured tracking-impact test. Do not claim that a particular wall thickness, color, or print material is optically safe without testing the finished part on the actual controller.

Using the expansion port without guessing
The report describes a front expansion port with high-speed MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces and mentions simple KiCad and Altium reference designs. That information makes the port a plausible foundation for camera, sensor, or other electronics experiments, but it is not a complete electrical specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore designing an enclosure or plugging in a board, read the current Valve documentation for the exact pinout, voltage and current limits, signal requirements, connector mechanics, boot or software support, and any warnings. The repository’s license and the status of its reference designs were not independently verified here.
Mechanically, provide a controlled cable path, strain relief, and enough access to disconnect the board without levering against the headset connector. Electrically, assume nothing about hot-plugging, power availability, shielding, or software enumeration until the documentation confirms it. A printed adapter can be dimensionally correct and still damage hardware if its board or cable is electrically incompatible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a STEP model may differ from your unit
Several kinds of variation can exist even when the CAD is accurate to its intended design:
- Manufacturing variation: molded or assembled parts may not occupy exactly the nominal position.
- Assembly variation: fasteners, pads, straps, and shells can settle differently.
- Configuration variation: a strap adjustment or accessory installed on the headset changes the available envelope.
- Material behavior: foam compresses, fabric stretches, and flexible plastic deflects under load.
- Model scope: the released file may omit internal details, soft goods, adhesives, or service clearances.
- Revision variation: a later repository revision or hardware revision may change geometry.
Because none of these effects has a published value in the available report, there is no evidence-based universal clearance to recommend. Build in adjustability where possible, test the actual unit, and state exactly which revision and configuration your design supports.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The digital accessory fits, but the printed part will not install | Hidden assembly feature, print shrinkage, or a nominal surface that is inaccessible after assembly | Inspect the assembled unit, locate the first interference, and update the parametric contact geometry |
| The part fits at a desk but slips while worn | Flexible strap movement, sweat, load direction, or insufficient retention | Test adjustment extremes and head movement; redesign the retention method rather than simply tightening it |
| Tracking becomes unreliable with a controller shell or stand | An infrared LED is shaded or the controller is held in a poor orientation | Compare the finished part with the documented LED locations and test from multiple tracking angles |
| A case closes but presses the headset | Padding compression or assembled strap volume was not represented | Use the real headset and strap, add compliant spacing, and test closure repeatedly |
| An expansion-port board does not work | Unknown pinout, power, signal, software, or connector constraint | Stop applying power and consult the current port documentation and reference design |
| One unit fits and another does not | Unit or assembly variation | Measure both units, identify the critical interface, and publish the supported revision and adjustment range |
Manufacturing choices and what the evidence supports
The available information does not establish a best print material, process, wall thickness, or tolerance. Choose those variables from the job: a flexible clip needs different behavior from a rigid protective cover; a cosmetic shell has different requirements from a load-bearing strap mount; and an electronics enclosure needs different thermal and electrical considerations from a storage insert.

Prototype the functional interface before optimizing surface finish. If the part must flex, test repeated cycles. If it bears the headset’s weight, test retention without relying on a fragile snap. If it sits near optics, cameras, or tracking emitters, inspect the finished material and geometry rather than inferring performance from the CAD preview.
Makers without a printer can send a finalized file to a US 3D-printing service, but no particular provider, price, or service level is established here. The same validation responsibilities remain: inspect the received part, fit it to the intended unit, and test its use before distributing it.
Licensing, attribution, and publication cautions
Because the repository could not be opened during the source check, the exact license is unresolved. Read the license in the current repository before redistributing the STEP files, embedding them in a commercial product, publishing modified models, or selling printed accessories. Keep the repository revision and any required attribution with your project records.
Do not describe a design as officially endorsed, guaranteed to fit, or compatible with every Steam Frame unless the current Valve documentation says so. A maker’s own prototype result should be reported with its tested hardware, revision, and configuration.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Is the surface you need represented by the current core-module, strap, or controller reference?
- Does your design touch a flexible, padded, moving, or adjustable part?
- Could it cover an infrared LED, camera, button, trigger, vent, or connector?
- Can it be installed and removed without forcing the headset or blocking service access?
- Have you checked the assembled hardware rather than only an isolated CAD body?
- Have you tested the intended headset and controller, not just a screen measurement?
- For expansion-port work, have you verified the current electrical documentation and reference design?
- Have you recorded the repository revision, physical unit, and any measured corrections?
- Have you read the current license before sharing files or selling parts?
Bottom line
The reported Steam Frame STEP files are the most defensible starting point for designing around the modeled core module, head strap, and controllers. They should save makers from reconstructing nominal geometry from photographs, and the reported LED and expansion-port documentation adds useful functional constraints. They do not provide a published tolerance, accuracy test, or fit guarantee. Build from the CAD, verify every critical interface on the actual assembled headset or controller, protect tracking and optical paths, and treat expansion-port work as an electrical project until Valve’s current documentation confirms the details.
