Valve built them with a split gamepad layout—D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers and bumpers—while also adding spatial tracking and VR inputs. A conventional one-piece pad, such as an Xbox Wireless Controller, remains a reasonable alternative if you prefer holding a joined controller, but Valve’s published documentation does not establish that it works better overall with Steam Frame.
The short answer: which works better?
For most people using Steam Frame to play a conventional, non-VR game, start with the controllers included in the headset’s ecosystem. Valve describes Steam Frame Controllers as gamepad-capable devices designed for the Steam library, so you do not automatically need a separate controller for a flat-screen title. Their split design lets each hand hold one controller, yet the controls map to familiar console inputs.

A traditional gamepad can feel preferable when you want both hands connected to one object, when you already have a controller configured in Steam, or when a particular game’s existing gamepad profile behaves more predictably with a standard device. That is a preference and setup decision, not a documented performance advantage. The available Valve material does not provide controlled comfort, precision, latency or accessibility comparisons between the two arrangements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe right choice depends on three questions:
- Does the game expose a usable gamepad profile, or does it expect keyboard and mouse input?
- Are you streaming the game from a PC or running software in a standalone mode?
- Do you prefer a split, tracked layout or a joined controller in your hands?
Steam Frame supports both flat-screen and VR use, so the same tracked controllers can cover both jobs. Confirm the title’s bindings before assuming that a fallback profile will feel perfect.

What Steam Frame Controllers actually provide
Valve’s Steam Frame product page lists a split gamepad arrangement with a D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers and bumpers. The controllers are also spatially tracked and include inputs needed by VR games. In other words, they are not motion-only wands that happen to be bundled with a headset; they are gamepad-style controls divided between two hands.
Valve’s Steamworks input documentation expands that list with standard console-controller capabilities, touch states, grip buttons, capacitive finger tracking and six-degrees-of-freedom spatial tracking. For a non-VR game, Steam Input can present the device as a generic gamepad or, depending on the title and configured bindings, as keyboard and mouse input. The game therefore receives whatever control scheme its active Steam Input configuration defines rather than a universal, identical interface in every title. Read Valve’s input documentation for the current mapping model: Steam Frame Input.
Valve marks some Steam Frame specifications as subject to change ahead of availability. One published figure is approximately 40 hours of play time per controller from one AA battery. That is a stated estimate, not a guaranteed runtime under every tracking, vibration or usage pattern. Check the current Steam Frame product page for specification changes.

Steam Frame Controllers versus a traditional gamepad
| Consideration | Steam Frame Controllers | Traditional one-piece gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Physical layout | Controls are split between two handheld units. | All controls are joined in one shell. |
| Flat-screen inputs | D-pad, ABXY, thumbsticks, triggers and bumpers are available across the pair. | Uses the familiar integrated console-style layout of the selected pad. |
| VR capabilities | Six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, grip inputs and capacitive finger features are included alongside gamepad controls. | Provides ordinary gamepad input; headset-specific tracking is not established by the cited Steam Support page. |
| How non-VR games receive input | Steam Input may expose a generic gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse behavior, depending on the game and bindings. | Steam commonly recognizes supported pads as game controllers, but the game’s profile still determines usable actions. |
| Hand position | Each hand holds a separate controller, which can leave the hands apart and preserve tracking. | Both hands hold the same connected device. |
| Need for an extra purchase | Not required merely because a game is flat-screen; the controllers are already gamepad-capable. | Optional for users who prefer a joined pad or already own one. |
| Published comparative comfort or latency result | Not stated in the cited Valve material. | Not stated in the cited Valve material. |

How Steam Input handles a flat-screen game
Steam Input is the layer that translates controller actions into the interface a title understands. A game may receive ordinary gamepad buttons, or a configured layout may convert actions into keyboard and mouse commands. That distinction matters because a title that works well with an Xbox-style gamepad can behave differently when its active configuration is a keyboard-and-mouse layout.
Default and fallback bindings
Valve says SteamVR uses a Frame Controller binding by default. If a title does not have one, the documented fallback sequence is an OpenXR Generic Controller binding, followed by an Oculus Touch binding; those bindings are remapped to the Frame Controller layout. This fallback means Steam has a route for presenting controls, not that every game will have ideal labels, comfortable reach or complete coverage of unusual actions. See the exact binding behavior in Valve’s Steam Frame Input documentation.
Why a fallback can still require adjustment
- A game may expose only part of its action set through the available profile.
- Button names shown by the game can reflect its original controller assumptions rather than the physical location on a split Frame controller.
- Some titles expect keyboard modifiers, mouse pointing or context-sensitive shortcuts that need a custom Steam Input action.
- VR games and VR modifications can use bindings that differ substantially from a flat-screen gamepad layout.
Do not treat the existence of a fallback mapping as a promise of flawless compatibility. Open the game’s controller layout and verify the actions you actually use, especially menus, inventory shortcuts, camera controls and combination inputs.

Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR use. Whether the game runs on the computer or directly on the headset changes what you need to check. The input device may be the same, but the game, runtime and active Steam Input configuration can differ between modes. Valve’s overview is available at Steam Frame overview.

When the game is streamed from your PC
- Launch the game through Steam on the host PC and connect Steam Frame as your VR client.
- Confirm that SteamVR sees the Frame Controllers and that the game is using the intended controller layout.
- Check whether the title is receiving gamepad actions or keyboard-and-mouse actions in its Steam Input configuration.
- Start a save or tutorial area where you can safely test movement, camera control, menus and secondary actions.
- Save any working remap as a personal layout so you can restore it after an update or after switching games.
Streaming does not turn a keyboard-and-mouse game into a native gamepad title. If the game’s normal interface is built around a pointer, you may need a Steam Input layout that translates stick or touch actions into mouse movement and assigns clicks to buttons.
When software runs in standalone mode
Check that the title is available for the standalone environment and that its input profile supports the Frame Controllers in that mode. A binding that works for a streamed PC executable is not evidence that a separate standalone build exposes identical actions. Treat the game’s own control documentation and the active Steam Input layout as authoritative for that installation.
When a traditional one-piece controller makes more sense
You strongly prefer a joined hand position
Some players naturally rest both hands on one shell and use the controller as a single physical reference. A split controller removes that connection. If your muscle memory depends on the two grips staying aligned, an Xbox Wireless Controller or another supported traditional pad may feel more intuitive. This is an ergonomic preference; no controlled comfort study is cited here.
You already have a working Steam profile
Steam Support lists Microsoft Xbox controllers among the controllers supported in Big Picture mode: Steam’s Big Picture mode controller support. That establishes support in Steam’s Big Picture context, not certification for every Steam Frame setup or proof that every game will behave identically. If your existing pad already has a reliable per-game layout, using it can avoid rebuilding those bindings.

The game’s profile is easier to understand on a standard pad
A title that displays conventional button prompts and has a mature gamepad layout may be simpler to operate with a joined controller. The practical test is whether all required actions are available and clearly labeled, not whether the product category has a universal advantage.
When the Steam Frame Controllers are the better default
You want one set of controllers for VR and flat-screen titles
The Frame pair combines six-degrees-of-freedom tracking and VR-oriented grip and finger inputs with conventional gamepad controls. Switching from a VR title to a flat-screen game does not automatically require putting the controllers down and finding another device.
You want your hands free of a connecting bar
A split arrangement can let you position each hand independently. That may be useful while wearing a headset because the controllers remain separately tracked rather than relying on the player to keep a single pad in a particular orientation. Valve does not publish a comparative comfort score, so decide from your own hand position and play style.

You do not own another gamepad
Because the Frame Controllers include the expected gamepad inputs, buying a separate controller is an option rather than a documented requirement for non-VR games. Budget and availability are not established here; Valve’s published specifications and availability can change.

A practical setup checklist
- Update the headset and Steam software. Use the current software versions offered by your installation before diagnosing a missing binding.
- Pair and wake both Frame Controllers. Verify that each hand is visible and tracked in SteamVR.
- Open the title’s controller settings. Look for the active Steam Input layout and determine whether it is presented as a gamepad or as keyboard and mouse.
- Inspect every essential action. Test movement, camera, primary and secondary interactions, jump or crouch, pause, inventory and menu navigation.
- Check the fallback profile. If no Frame binding exists, review the OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch fallback that Steam has remapped to the Frame layout.
- Customize only what is necessary. Reassign awkward actions, adjust dead zones or change touch and grip behavior when the game’s profile leaves a needed command inaccessible.
- Save and label the layout. Keep a personal copy with the game’s name and mode, such as streamed PC or standalone.
- Re-test after changing modes. Switching between a streamed executable, a standalone build or a VR modification can select a different action set.
Troubleshooting common control problems
The game does not respond to the Frame Controllers
- Confirm SteamVR sees both controllers rather than only one.
- Open the game’s Steam Input configuration and select a Frame Controller layout if one is available.
- If no Frame profile exists, inspect the documented OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch fallbacks.
- Restart the game after changing the active layout; some titles read the controller type only at launch.
- Test another Steam title to distinguish a game-specific profile problem from a headset or pairing problem.
Only some buttons work
This usually indicates an incomplete or unsuitable action set rather than proof that the hardware cannot control the game. Compare the game’s required actions with the active layout, then create a personal remap for missing commands. Keyboard-and-mouse titles may need explicit bindings for mouse clicks, pointer movement or modifier keys.
The prompts do not match the physical controls
Prompts are generated by the game’s assumed input type. A remapped fallback can send the correct action while still showing labels associated with another controller. Use the Steam Input layout as the physical reference and change the game’s prompt setting only if the title offers that option.
Tracking works, but flat-screen controls feel awkward
Separate the technical question from the ergonomic one. First verify that the correct actions are assigned. If every action works but the hand position is uncomfortable, try a different grip, adjust the layout or switch to a joined gamepad. Valve’s documentation does not establish a universal comfort winner.
Battery and maintenance considerations
Valve lists approximately 40 hours of play time per controller on one AA battery. Because that figure is an approximate product specification and some specifications are subject to change before availability, treat it as a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed session length. Keep spare AA batteries available if you use the controllers for long sessions, and check the current product page for revisions.
A traditional gamepad has its own power system, which may be replaceable batteries, a rechargeable pack or a cable depending on the model. The cited sources do not provide a runtime comparison, so choose based on the controller you already own and how you prefer to recharge or replace its power source.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want to play ordinary Steam games in VR and have no separate pad. | Steam Frame Controllers | They already provide the documented gamepad inputs and Steam Input support. |
| You dislike split controllers and own a configured one-piece pad. | Your traditional gamepad | A joined layout may match your muscle memory and existing profile. |
| You alternate between VR games and flat-screen games. | Steam Frame Controllers first | The same tracked pair includes VR inputs and conventional controls. |
| The game has missing or confusing actions on the Frame fallback. | Try a custom Frame layout, then a traditional pad | Fix the binding before deciding the hardware is unsuitable. |
| You are comparing comfort, latency or precision without testing. | Do not assume a winner | The cited Valve sources publish no head-to-head measurements. |
What the evidence does not establish
There is no named market statistic, independent comparative performance figure, laboratory latency result or comfort score in the cited material. It also does not establish that an Xbox Wireless Controller is required for Steam Frame, that every Xbox-compatible game has identical behavior with Frame Controllers, or that fallback bindings eliminate setup work. Product pricing, retailer availability and affiliate status are likewise not established here.
The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: Steam Frame Controllers are designed to cover flat-screen gamepad play as well as VR interaction, making them the sensible first choice for most Steam Frame owners. A traditional controller is a valid preference-based alternative when its joined shape or existing profile better suits a particular player or game.
