Steam Frame Eye Tracking Not Working: Troubleshooting Steps

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Steam Frame eye tracking appears not to work, first identify which function is failing. Valve describes two interior cameras that steer detail for foveated streaming inside the headset. Separately, a streamed PC application may receive eye-gaze or eye-openness data through Steam Link, OpenXR, or OSC. Those are different paths, so an app receiving no data does not by itself prove that the headset’s foveated-streaming tracking has failed.

Use the symptom-based checks below, then report the problem with your software versions and reproduction steps. Valve’s published material does not currently provide a user calibration, eye-tracking reset, or camera-repair procedure; do not invent one or open the headset.

Identify what “not working” means

Steam Frame’s eye-tracking hardware has more than one job. Valve’s product information says two cameras inside the headset capture eye movement and provide low-latency data that steers image detail for foveated streaming. The same headset also has four outward-facing monochrome cameras and infrared illuminators for headset and controller tracking, including in dark environments. The outward cameras are not the interior eye-tracking cameras.

A second scenario occurs when a PC game or other application streamed through Steam Link cannot read gaze information. In that case, the failure may be a sharing setting, an application interface mismatch, or a version limitation rather than a fault in the headset’s internal foveated-streaming path.

What you observe Most relevant path First check
Image detail does not appear to follow where you look while using foveated streaming Steam Frame’s internal eye tracking Wear the headset in its normal position and make sure the interior camera area is unobstructed. This is a visual check, not an official calibration procedure.
One streamed PC application reports no gaze data Steam Link sharing plus the application’s supported interface Review Steam Link’s eye-data sharing setting and confirm whether the application supports OpenXR eye gaze or OSC.
Several applications receive no gaze data Steam Link, SteamVR, or the shared-data interface Check the same setting and software versions across the affected applications, then document whether the failure is universal.
An app expects eye openness but receives nothing SteamVR’s OSC eye-openness feature Check the SteamVR 2.18.2 beta requirement of SteamOS 0.4.3 or newer for this specific feature.

Keeping these cases separate prevents a common misdiagnosis: an application that does not implement the interface used by Steam Link cannot receive data simply because the headset’s cameras are functioning.

How Steam Frame’s tracking systems differ

Interior cameras and foveated streaming

Valve identifies two cameras inside Steam Frame for eye tracking. Their published use is to provide low-latency eye-tracking data that directs more rendering or streaming detail toward the area you are looking at. This is the headset’s own foveated-streaming behavior. You do not need a PC application to read gaze coordinates for that behavior to operate.

Outward cameras and room tracking

Four outward-facing monochrome cameras handle headset and controller tracking, with infrared illuminators intended to help in dark environments. If room-scale position or controller tracking is failing, that is a different diagnostic problem from interior eye tracking. Cleaning, covering, or troubleshooting the outward cameras will not establish whether the interior eye-tracking cameras are working.

Data shared with a streamed PC application

Valve’s Steam Link announcement says eye-gaze information may be passed through OpenXR using XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction when the option is enabled in Steam Link settings. This is an optional transmission path to software on the PC. It does not demonstrate that every application accepts the same data, and it is not a requirement for the headset’s own foveated streaming.

Step 1: classify the failure before changing anything

  1. Test the headset-level symptom. Note whether the perceived image-detail problem occurs in every streamed experience or only in one title. A problem confined to one application points toward that application’s rendering or streaming behavior rather than proving an eye-camera fault.
  2. Test the PC-data symptom separately. If the complaint is that a PC application shows no gaze or eye-openness input, write down the application name, its runtime (for example, OpenXR), and the exact input it expects. “Gaze” and “eye openness” are not interchangeable signals.
  3. Check the scope. Record whether one application fails or multiple applications fail. One-app failures are more consistent with application support or configuration; failures across all tested paths justify checking Steam Link and SteamVR versions and preparing a system report.

Do not use the existence of one symptom to infer the other. Foveated streaming can be functioning even when an application receives no shared gaze data, and an application-interface problem can exist even when the headset’s interior cameras are operating.

Step 2: perform the safe physical checks

Valve’s hardware description makes a limited visual inspection reasonable:

  1. Put the headset on in its normal viewing position rather than holding it away from your face or wearing it at an extreme angle.
  2. Look at the interior camera area and remove anything visibly blocking it, such as a loose cover or object that has shifted into the field of view.
  3. Repeat the same test after reseating the headset so the lenses and cameras are aligned with your eyes in the usual way.

These are observational checks, not a Valve-published calibration sequence. The public product and SteamVR pages reviewed for this issue do not describe a user calibration screen, a reset command, a camera diagnostic, or a method for proving that a camera has failed. Do not touch or reposition the camera modules, disassemble the headset, or treat prescription inserts and other accessories as an eye-tracking repair. Valve lists such accessories separately, but does not identify them as a remedy for tracking faults.

Step 3: if a streamed PC app receives no gaze data

Check Steam Link’s eye-data sharing option

Open the Steam Link settings used for the headset-to-PC streaming session and look for the eye-data or eye-gaze sharing control. Valve states that eye-gaze information may pass through OpenXR when this option is enabled. If sharing is disabled, an application on the PC should not be expected to receive that stream.

After changing the setting, test the same application again and record whether the result changes. Avoid assuming that a setting labelled for eye gaze also supplies every form of eye signal; the receiving application must request and understand the interface Valve exposes.

Confirm the application’s interface

Ask the application developer or consult the application’s own input documentation to determine whether it supports XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction. An application that expects a proprietary protocol, a different OpenXR extension, or no eye input at all will not necessarily show data even when Steam Link sharing is enabled.

Compare at least one known OpenXR application with the application that fails, if you have access to one. If the known OpenXR test receives gaze while the original application does not, the evidence points to application support or configuration. If no application receives data, continue with the version and reporting checks below.

Distinguish gaze from eye openness

Gaze data describes where the user is looking. Eye-openness data describes how open an eye is. An application built for one should not be assumed to consume the other. The SteamVR announcement discussed below concerns eye-openness information sent over OSC; it is not a general minimum-version statement for all eye tracking or for OpenXR gaze.

Step 4: apply the dated version requirement only to OSC eye-openness

Valve’s SteamVR 2.18.2 beta announcement, dated October 1, 2026, says that Steam Frame eye-openness information is exposed through OSC and requires SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher. At the time of that announcement, SteamOS 0.4.3 was on the OS Beta branch.

Feature being tested Interface Version information published by Valve What the requirement does not mean
Eye-openness information from Steam Frame OSC through SteamVR SteamVR 2.18.2 beta announcement of October 1, 2026; SteamOS 0.4.3 or newer, with 0.4.3 described as an OS Beta build at that time It is not a published requirement for all headset eye tracking or for foveated streaming.
Eye-gaze information to a streamed PC application OpenXR, including XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction, when enabled in Steam Link settings No single universal minimum version is stated in the cited announcement It does not guarantee that every PC application supports the extension.
Headset foveated streaming Steam Frame’s internal eye-tracking path No public minimum version is stated in the cited product description Do not apply the OSC/SteamOS 0.4.3 requirement to this function.

Check Valve’s current stable and beta availability before switching channels. A beta-channel note is useful for diagnosing the feature it names, but it should not be presented as a promise that the same build is currently stable, available in every region, or necessary for unrelated tracking behavior.

Step 5: use the failure pattern to choose the next action

Only one application fails

  • Verify that the application supports the interface it claims to use.
  • Check whether it expects OpenXR gaze, OSC eye openness, or another signal.
  • Confirm that its own eye-input permission or feature toggle is enabled.
  • Capture the application version and a short reproduction sequence for its developer.

This pattern does not establish a headset hardware failure. Keep the Steam Link setting and the application interface in the same diagnostic record so the developer can tell whether the data was never shared or was shared but not consumed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several applications fail to receive gaze

  • Confirm the Steam Link eye-data sharing setting while the affected streaming session is active.
  • Check whether all affected applications use the same interface. If they do not, a common Steam Link or SteamVR problem is more plausible than a single application bug.
  • For OSC eye-openness specifically, verify the SteamVR 2.18.2 beta and SteamOS 0.4.3-or-newer conditions described in Valve’s October 1, 2026 announcement.
  • Record whether the headset-level foveated-streaming symptom occurs at the same time. Treat that as a separate observation.

Foveated streaming appears wrong but applications receive data

If an application successfully receives the expected gaze or openness signal while the streamed image still appears not to change detail with your view, focus on the headset-level observation. Recheck normal fit and the unobstructed interior camera area, then document the content, lighting conditions, and repeatable steps. There is no public Valve instruction that lets a user recalibrate or reset the cameras, so do not substitute a made-up procedure.

Nothing works and the symptom is not reproducible

Write down what changed between sessions, including SteamVR and SteamOS channels, Steam Link settings, the application tested, and whether the headset was reseated. Intermittent behavior is especially useful to report with a timeline rather than a single statement that “eye tracking is broken.”

Step 6: prepare a useful Valve bug report

For a failure in SteamVR or streaming, Valve’s announcement directs users to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and asks them to include a SteamVR System Report when possible. A complete report should contain:

  • Steam Frame, SteamOS, SteamVR, and Steam Link versions, including whether each is on a beta channel.
  • The date and time of the test and the region or channel if a beta build is involved.
  • Whether the failure concerns foveated image detail, OpenXR gaze, OSC eye openness, or more than one path.
  • The application name and version, plus the interface it is supposed to use.
  • Whether one application or every tested application is affected.
  • The exact steps that reproduce the issue, including the Steam Link eye-data setting.
  • Whether the interior camera area was visibly unobstructed and the headset was worn normally.
  • A SteamVR System Report attached as Valve requests, if the problem is in SteamVR or streaming.

Keep the report factual. Say what you observed and what you tested; do not claim that a camera is physically defective unless Valve confirms that diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the public instructions do not establish

The Valve pages covered here do not publish a final user-facing workflow for eye-tracking calibration, a reset procedure, a camera self-test, or a device-specific hardware escalation process. They also do not identify prescription inserts or accessory kits as fixes. If current Valve support documentation later supplies a device-specific procedure, follow that documentation rather than generic headset advice.

Until such instructions exist, the defensible approach is limited to checking the correct data path, enabling the relevant Steam Link option, applying the dated OSC requirement only where it belongs, making a cautious fit and obstruction check, and reporting reproducible failures with system information.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Which symptom? Foveated image detail in the headset, or missing data in a streamed PC application?
  2. Which signal? OpenXR eye gaze, OSC eye openness, or no application data at all?
  3. Which scope? One application, several applications, or the headset-level feature?
  4. Which setting? Is Steam Link eye-data sharing enabled for the active session?
  5. Which versions? For OSC eye openness, are SteamVR 2.18.2 beta and SteamOS 0.4.3-or-newer conditions met, with the beta-channel qualification?
  6. Which physical checks? Is the headset seated normally and the interior camera area visibly clear, without opening or modifying the device?
  7. Which report? Have you recorded versions, application/interface, reproduction steps, and a SteamVR System Report when applicable?

This sequence keeps the two meanings of “eye tracking” separate and avoids treating an application data-path problem as proof of a camera failure.
