Steam Frame Settings to Change for Comfort, Performance, and Battery Life

Start by separating local play from PC streaming, then tune refresh and rendering settings around stable frame pacing—not the highest available target.

The best Steam Frame settings depend first on whether a game runs on the headset or streams from a PC. For either mode, start with a refresh rate the game can sustain, then use the performance overlay to diagnose uneven pacing before reducing visual quality. Foveated streaming applies only to PC streaming; it does not improve locally rendered games.

First, identify how you are playing

Local (standalone) games are rendered by Steam Frame itself. PC-streamed games are rendered on a computer and sent to the headset over a wireless connection, so their performance depends on the PC and the connection as well as headset settings.

Do not use a local-game compatibility badge as a prediction of streaming performance: Valve says its review process rates games running locally on Steam Frame, not games streamed from a PC. Valve’s compatibility information

Choose a refresh rate the game can hold

Valve lists Steam Frame refresh rates from 72 to 144 Hz. Valve’s Steam Frame product page That range is not a recommendation to select the maximum. PC Gamer describes 144 Hz as experimental and reports that higher refresh settings trade battery life and processing headroom for the potential of smoother motion; its description of Playtime mode and available settings reflects the review period, not a guarantee for every software version or mode. • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

Steam Frame Lab’s independent guidance is to match the system frame-rate limit to the selected refresh rate, then lower both if the game cannot maintain the target. Treat that as a practical starting point, not an official Valve rule. A consistently delivered lower target is generally a better starting point than an ambitious rate with uneven frame delivery.

How Valve’s local compatibility bar differs

Valve’s stated minimum performance criterion for a VR title to meet its local-game review bar is at least 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play. Valve also recommends that developers provide motion vectors and depth suitable for reprojection to enable optional higher refresh rates with improved reprojection techniques. These are developer-facing compatibility criteria and recommendations, not settings every player should apply to every game. Valve’s compatibility information

Check frame pacing before lowering image quality

Use Valve’s in-headset performance graph to see whether the problem is frame timing rather than simply a subjective impression of blur or stutter. The documented path is Quick Access Menu > Performance > VR Settings > Show Perf Overlay In VR. Menu names and availability can change with software updates.

  • Green: frame times are within budget.
  • Yellow: the game is running at half rate.
  • Red: each frame takes more than two vsync intervals.
  • Pink: compositor GPU preemption failure.

The overlay can show the target game-loop rate, submitted per-eye resolution, compositor time, GPU frequency and recent average power draw. Check it before and after changing one setting so you can tell whether the adjustment actually helped. Valve’s frame-timing documentation

Valve also documents performance recording for locally running VR applications. Recorded fields include actual FPS, peak CPU and GPU frame times, reprojected frames, refresh rate and peak power. The documentation says recording is active only when a local VR application is running, so do not treat it as a record of PC-streamed performance. Valve’s frame-timing documentation

For local games: reduce rendering load only when needed

If the overlay indicates that a local game is struggling, first check the game’s own graphics options. Steam Frame Lab describes Performance-tab controls including render resolution, half-rate shading and frame-rate limit. Its independent guide says half-rate shading can reduce GPU work but may cost fine detail, and suggests considering it when a game remains borderline after in-game graphics adjustments. The visible options and their effects can depend on the software version and title; compare the image in the game you are actually playing rather than assuming one setting is best for all games. For PC streaming: keep streaming-specific controls in context

Steam Frame Lab recommends leaving foveated streaming enabled for PC-streamed games: the stream carries full detail around the user’s gaze and less detail toward the periphery, reducing wireless data demand. This is third-party guidance from an independent fan guide, not a Valve support recommendation. It does not optimize local games because they do not receive a wireless PC video stream. If a streamed game has connection trouble, Valve’s update notes report improved wireless streaming reliability and fixes for “Error 17.” They also specify SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC as a measure to reduce those connection issues; the notes said that version was on the SteamVR beta branch at release. Because that branch status can change, check the current SteamVR release status rather than assuming the version is still beta or stable. Valve’s Steam Frame update notes

Battery and comfort: use measured changes, not assumptions

Valve’s 2026 software update notes report improved battery lifetime during both streaming and local gameplay by up to 12%, with results varying by framerate and content. That is a vendor-reported maximum, not a guaranteed increase for an individual player or a promise of a particular number of extra minutes. The notes do not attribute battery savings to the dominant-eye setting. Valve’s Steam Frame update notes

For comfort, Valve added Track Dominant Eye Only under VR Settings > General; the update notes say advanced settings must be shown. Valve describes it as an accessibility option. It is worth trying if it addresses your needs, but the documentation does not claim that it improves comfort for everyone. Valve’s Steam Frame update notes

Higher refresh settings can cost battery life and processing headroom, according to PC Gamer’s review, so consider whether a higher target is worthwhile for the game and session rather than selecting it by default. PC Gamer’s Steam Frame review

A practical order for tuning

  1. Choose the play mode. Decide whether the title runs locally or streams from a PC; only the latter uses foveated streaming.
  2. Set a sustainable refresh target. Start below the maximum if necessary, and, following Steam Frame Lab’s independent advice, match the frame-rate limit to the selected refresh rate.
  3. Inspect the performance overlay. Use the documented Quick Access Menu path and note the frame-time color and available readings.
  4. Change one relevant control at a time. For local rendering load, consider in-game graphics first, then render resolution or half-rate shading if available. For a PC stream, consider the streaming controls and connection.
  5. Recheck in the same game scene. Compare pacing and visible detail after each change; settings that help one title may not help another.

Valve’s menus, update availability and SteamVR branch status can change over time, so use the current on-device labels and software version when following these paths.
